“Far be it from me that I should admit you are right [in your accusations against me];
Until I die, I will not remove my integrity from me.

“For it will hurl [thunderbolts of God’s wrath] at him unsparingly and without compassion;
He flees in haste from its power.


“People will clap their hands at him [to mock and ridicule him]
And hiss him out of his place.

He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.


“He breaks open (mine) shafts far away from where people live,
[In places] forgotten by the [human] foot;
They dangle [in the mines] and hang away from men.


“[As for] the earth, out of it comes food,
But underneath [its surface, down deep] it is turned over as fire.

A path -- not known it hath a ravenous fowl, Nor scorched it hath an eye of the kite,

{Proud wild animals} have not trodden it; [the] lion in its prime has not prowled over it.

He puts his hand on the hard rock; he overturns mountains by [the] roots.

He cutteth out channels in the rocks, and his eye seeth every precious thing.

"But from where will wisdom be found? And {where in the world} [is the] place of understanding?

"Refined gold cannot be gotten in its place, and silver cannot be weighed out [as] its price.

It is not set in the balance with gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, and the sapphire.

Gold and glass cannot be compared with it, and its substitution [cannot be] an ornament of refined gold.

The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be compared to it, neither shall it be set in the balance with pure gold.

Indeed, from where does wisdom come? And {where in the world} [is the] place of understanding?

It has been concealed from the sight of every living creature and hidden even from the birds in the skies.


Then He saw wisdom and declared it;
He established it and searched it out.

So Job proceeded and went forth in his communication, saying,

When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;

When the young men, as soon as they saw me, hid themselves, and when the aged arose, and stood up unto me;

The voices of the commanders-in-chief were hushed, and their tongues would cling to the roofs of their mouths."

When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:

The blessing of the perishing cometh on me, And the heart of the widow I cause to sing.

I was an eye unto the blind, and a foot to the lame;

And I broke [the] evil one's jaw bones, and I made [his] prey drop from his teeth.

My root shall be spread out to the waters, and the dew will lie all night on my branch;

"They listened and waited for me, as they remained in silence for my counsel.

They waited for me as one waits for rain, as one opens his mouth to drink in a spring rain shower.

If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.

But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.

Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?

For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.

And when they were driven forth, men cried after them, as it had been after a thief.

The sons of the foolish one, also the sons of no name: they were beaten from the land.

Now I am mocked by their songs;
I have become an object of scorn to them.

because he has loosened his bowstring and humbled me, and they have thrown off restraint {in my presence}.

On the right hand doth a brood arise, My feet they have cast away, And they raise up against me, Their paths of calamity.


“They break up and clutter my path [upsetting my plans],
They profit from my destruction;
No one restrains them.

They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.

Terrors have turned on me. They chase my honor as the wind. My welfare has passed away as a cloud.

And now my soul is poured out in me; days of affliction have taken hold upon me.

I cry out to You for help, but You do not answer me;
when I stand up, You merely look at me.

Thou art changed to a cruel one to me; with the strength of thy hand thou pursuest me.

Thou liftest me up to the wind, thou causest me to ride upon it ; And thou dissolvest me in the storm.

For I know that, unto death, thou wilt bring me back, even unto the house of meeting for every one living.

Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.

My bowels are in turmoil, and they are not still; days of misery come to confront me.

I have become a brother to the jackals, and go about in the company of ostriches.


“My skin falls from me in blackened flakes,
And my bones are burned with fever.

But my harp is in mourning; my flute plays only songs for those who are weeping."

For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

Is not disaster for [the] evil one and ruin for [the] workers of mischief?

If I have walked in falsehood
or my foot has rushed to deceit,

If my steps have been turned out of the way, or if my heart went after my eyes, or if the property of another is in my hands;

Let me put seed in the earth for another to have the fruit of it, and let my produce be uprooted.

"If my heart has been enticed by a woman, and at my neighbor's doorway I have lain in wait,

let my own wife grind grain for another man,
and let other men sleep with her.

For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.
