said he, I know for certain, that the Lord has sent his angel, and has deliver'd me from the hands of Herod, and from what the Jews were in expectation of.
When Peter realized what had happened, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was also called Mark, where a large number of people had gathered and were praying.
And they said to her, "You are crazy." But she insisted that [what she reported] was true. They replied, "It is [only] his angel."
And he beckoned unto them with the hand to hold their peace, and told them by what means the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, "Go show these things unto James and to the brethren." And he departed and went into another place.
Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.
Suddenly, an angel from God struck him [with a terrible condition] because he refused to honor God [by what he said in his speech], so he was consumed by worms and died.
Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.
So Paul rose and, motioning with his hand, spoke as follows: "Men of Israel and all here who reverence God, hear what I have to say.
And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, What suppose ye that I am? I am not he . But behold, there cometh one after me the shoes of whose feet I am not worthy to unloose.
For the people living in Jerusalem, together with their ruling officials, did not understand [that Jesus was the Messiah] or what the message of the prophets, which is read every Sabbath day, really meant. So, [because of this] they [actually] made these Scripture predictions come true by condemning Jesus.
We're telling you the good news: What God promised our ancestors
agreeable to what is written in the first psalm, "thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee."
As to his raising Jesus from the dead, never again to return to corruption, this is what is said--'I will give to you the sacred promises made to David;'
So beware that what is said in the prophets does not happen to you:
[Hab. 1:5 says], "Look, you people who despise [God], and be amazed [at what He can do] and be destroyed [for rejecting Him]; for I [i.e., God] will accomplish such a work during your days that you will not believe [it could happen, even] if someone told you about it."
But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to oppose what Paul was saying by insulting him.
For this is what the Lord has commanded us:
a light for the Gentiles
to bring salvation
to the ends
When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in the form of men!”
But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard about what they were trying to do [to them], they tore their clothes [i.e., as an expression of frustration] and rushed over to the crowd and shouted,
cry'd out, "sirs, what are you going to do? we are but men as well as you, and we exhort you to renounce these vanities, and turn to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth and the sea, and all that they contain:
when they were arrived, and had assembled the Church, they related what great things God had wrought by them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles:
And when they were come to Jerusalem they were received of the congregation and of the apostles and elders. And they declared what things God had done by them.
Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
After they had finished speaking, James addressed the Council. "Brothers," he began, "hear what I have to say.
"After this will I return, and build again the tabernacle of David, that is fallen; and re-edify what hath been dug up from the foundation, and will set it upright again:
This is what the Lord said when He predicted these things long ago.'
but that we write unto them, that they abstain from the pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood.
This is what they wrote [in the letter]: "[This is] from your brothers, the apostles and elders [of the Jerusalem church]: Greetings to [our] Gentile brothers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia.
We have heard that certain [men] who left here have been upsetting you people and [even] undermining [some people's] spiritual lives by what they have been teaching. This was done without our authorization [or approval].
We are accordingly sending Judas and Silas, and they will tell you by word of mouth what we are now writing.
that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the flesh of strangled animals, and from fornication: you will do well to preserve your selves from these practices. farewel.
Some time after, Paul said to Barnabas, let us return to visit all those cities, where we have preach'd the word of the Lord, to see what condition the brethren are in.
A woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God, was listening. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was spoken by Paul.
And she kept this up for a number of days. But Paul was very disturbed [over what she was doing] and [finally] turned [to her] and said to the spirit [in the girl], "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And the evil spirit did come out [of her] immediately.
Then he escorted them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
Then he brought them into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, since he had believed in God with his entire family [accepting with joy what had been made known to them about the Christ].
the serjeants having reported what he said, to their officers, they began to be apprehensive upon hearing they were Romans.
Now these people [in Berea] had more character than those in Thessalonica because they [not only] received the message with an open mind but [also] examined the [Old Testament] Scriptures every day to see if what they had heard was really true.
Then also, some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, “What is this pseudo-intellectual
Others replied, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities”—because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the Resurrection.
And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?
For what you say sounds strange to us, and we want to know what these ideas mean.”
For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed:
TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.
Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.
On hearing of a resurrection of the dead, some began jeering, but others said that they would hear what he had to say about that another time.
he had been instructed in the doctrine of the gospel, and being full of zeal, he harangued with great assiduity about what related to Jesus, though he had been only instituted in the baptism of John.
In the synagogue he was very outspoken at first; but when Aquila and Priscilla listened to him, they took him home and explained more accurately to him what the Way of God really meant.
“Then what baptism were you baptized with?” he asked them.
“With John’s baptism,” they replied.
Many of the believers also came confessing their sins and describing what they had [previously] done.
[Here is what happened]: A certain manufacturer of silver objects named Demetrius, who made silver replicas of the temple of Artemis [i.e., a Greek goddess], brought much business to his workmen.
Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together;
And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
In fact, we run a risk of being charged with rioting for what happened today, since there is no justification that we can give as a reason for this disorderly gathering.”
But we went on ahead to the ship and set sail for Assos, intending to take Paul on board there; for that was what he had arranged, intending himself to go [a shorter route] by land.
And, when they were come to him, he said unto them - Ye yourselves, well know, from the first day when I set foot in Asia, in what manner came to be with you all the time,
in what manner I in nowise shrank from announcing unto you anything that was profitable and teaching you publicly and in your homes;
“And now I am on my way to Jerusalem, bound in my spirit,
save what the holy spirit in every city declares, "that bonds and afflictions wait for me."
Therefore, I [must] declare to you today that I am not responsible for what happens to any of you.
you yourselves can witness, that what was necessary for myself and those who were with me, these very hands have supply'd.
What saddened them most of all was when Paul said that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to his ship.
He came to us, took Paul’s belt, tied his own feet and hands, and said, “This is what the Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews in Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into Gentile hands.’”
Then, answered Paul - What are ye doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For, I, not only to be bound, but to die in Jerusalem, am ready, in behalf of the name of the Lord Jesus.
And, after these days, making ready what we had, we started to go up unto Jerusalem;
And when he had saluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry.
And hearing it, they gave praise to God; and they said to him, You see, brother, what thousands there are among the Jews, who have the faith; and they all have a great respect for the law:
Now what they have been repeatedly told about you is that you teach all the Jews among the Gentiles to abandon Moses, and that you forbid them to circumcise their children or observe old-established customs.
What, then, is it? at all events, they will hear that thou hast come.
Therefore do what we tell you: We have four men who have obligated themselves with a vow.
Take these men, purify yourself along with them, and pay for them to get their heads shaved. Then everyone will know that what they were told about you amounts to nothing, but that you yourself are also careful about observing the law.
But, concerning them of the nations who have believed, we ourselves, sent, deciding that they should be guarding themselves, both as to idol sacrifice, and blood, and what is strangled, and fornication.
shouting, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people, our law, and this place. What’s more, he also brought Greeks into the temple and has profaned this holy place.”
Then, the captain, drawing near, laid hold of him, and ordered him to be bound with two chains, - and began to enquire, who he might be, and what he had done;
From the crowd, some shouted one thing and some another. When the commander could not hear what was being said because of the noise, he ordered Paul to be taken into the battalion headquarters.
My brethren, and fathers, pray hear what I have to say for my self.
And I answered, 'What art thou Lord?' And he said unto me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.'
And they that were with me, saw the light, and were terrified; but they did not hear the voice of him that spake to me, And I said, What shall I do, Lord?
And said - What shall I do, Lord? And, the Lord, said unto me - Arise, and be going thy way into Damascus, and, there, shall it be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
And, now, what art thou going to do? Arise, and get thyself immersed, and have thy sins bathed away, calling upon his name.
the captain ordered him to be brought into the castle, saying, that, with scourging, he should be put to the test, - that he might find out, for what cause they were, thus, clamouring against him.
And, when the centurion heard that , he went unto the captain, and reported, saying - What art thou going to do? For, this man, is, a Roman?
as he was resolv'd to know for certain, the next day, what the Jews laid to his charge, he took off his chains, and summon'd the chief priests, and the council to appear, when Paul was brought, and presented before them.
what, said the standers-by, do you revile the high priest of God?
The shouting grew loud, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’
Now therefore do ye with the council make a representation to the chiliarch so that he may bring him down to you, as about to determine more precisely what concerns him, and we, before he draws near, are ready to kill him.
And the captain, taking him by the hand, and going aside, began, privately, to ask - What is it which thou hast to report unto me?
This man [i.e., Paul] was grabbed by the Jews and almost killed by them when I discovered what they were doing and rescued him, after learning that he was a Roman citizen.
having been informed he was a Roman, I had him brought before their Sanhedrim, to hear what crime they laid to his charge.
And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.
The soldiers therefore, according to what was ordered them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris,
And, when he had read it, and asked out of what province he was, and learned that he was from Cilicia,
but not to trespass upon you too far, be pleas'd to hear what I have to say in brief, with your usual indulgence.
and now, by examining him for yourself, you can find out exactly what charges we bring against him."
When the governor motioned to him to speak, Paul replied: “Because I know you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I am glad to offer my defense in what concerns me.
Neither can they provide evidence to you of what they now bring against me.
But, I declare to you, I am serving the God of our forefathers according to the 'Way,' called [by my detractors] a sect, and I believe everything that is in harmony with the law of Moses and what is written in [the writings of] the prophets.
Or, let, these themselves, say what wrong they found, when I stood before the High-council, -
Some days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, and sent for Paul and heard what he had to say about faith in Christ Jesus.
If then I am doing wrong, or have done anything deserving of death, I do not refuse to die, but if there is nothing to what these men accuse me of, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar!”
About whom, when the accusers stood up, they brought not one cause of what I supposed,
For it seems to me against reason to send a prisoner without making clear what there is against him.
