What then should we conclude from this? [Just this]: If God is on our side, who can [successfully] oppose us?
Just as it is written, "On account of you we are being put to death the whole day [long]; we are considered as sheep for slaughter."
just as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."
Thus God has mercy on anyone just as he pleases, and he makes anyone stubborn just as he pleases.

And how will they preach, unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "How timely [are] the feet of those who bring good news of good things."
What then? [Just this]: The very thing that the Israelites are looking for [i.e., a right relationship with God], they have not found. But God's selected ones obtained [this right relationship with Him] and the rest [of the Israelites] were made insensitive to God's call,
just as it is written, "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear, until this very day."
And David says,
A stumbling block and a retribution to them.
I say then, did the Jews trip [over Jesus] just so they could fall [away from God]? Certainly not! [There was another reason]: Instead, it was by means of their sin that salvation was made available to the Gentiles, so that the Jews might become jealous of them [i.e., causing them to want what the Gentiles now had].
you must not be boasting against the natural branches. And if you do, just consider, you do not support the root, but the root supports you.

Stop undoing the work of God just for the sake of food. Everything is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything when it makes another stumble.
It is the duty of us who are strong to put up with the weaknesses of those who are immature, and not just suit ourselves.

But what I have just said is by way of concession, not command.

Just so the Lord has issued orders that those who preach the good news shall get their living out of it.
But I myself have never used any of these rights. And I am not writing this just to make it so in my case, for I had rather die than do that. No one shall rob me of this ground of boasting.
What then is my reward? [Just this:] that, when I preach the gospel, I may offer the gospel without charge [to everyone], so as not to take advantage of my rights [as a preacher and apostle] in [preaching] the gospel.
So, I run with a purpose and I fight that way [too]; I do not just shadow box.

You demonstrated in everything [you did] that you were pure [i.e., innocent] in this matter. [Note: This whole description of their conduct appears to be a reference to the incident mentioned in 2:1-11].
If I did express some pride in you to him, I have had no reason to be ashamed of it, but just as all I said to you was true, my boasting before Titus has also proved true.
and not just as we had hoped, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and [then] to us, by the will of God.
