When Jesus was arriv'd, he found that Lazarus had been then four days in the grave.
Lord, said Martha to Jesus, if you had been here, my brother had not been dead.
When Martha's Jewish friends, who had been comforting her at her house, saw Mary getting up quickly and leaving, they followed her, thinking she was going to the grave site to mourn.
Mary being come to the place where Jesus was, as soon as she saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here, my brother had not been dead.
When Jesus saw her and her Jewish friends, who had come with her, crying, He felt distressed in His spirit and [visibly] troubled [Note: This last word means to shake with emotion, and seems to have been caused by His deep sympathy for these grieving people],
Jesus, however, again restraining His strong feeling, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone had been laid against the mouth of it.
Jesus said, take away the stone. Martha, sister to the deceas'd, said to him, Lord, by this time he is offensive: for he hath been dead four days.
So, they removed the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, thank you for hearing me. [Note: Jesus had already prayed for and been assured of Lazarus' resurrection].
And the man who died came forth, wrapped hands and feet with grave-clothes, and his face had been wrapped around with a face cloth. Jesus says to them, Loose him, and allow him to go.
and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.
Six days before the passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had been dead, and raised to life again.
Then a great number of the Jews had news that he was there: and they came, not only because of Jesus, but so that they might see Lazarus who had been dead and to whom he had given life.
And Jesus, having found a young ass, sat upon it; as it has been written,
His disciples did not understand these things at first. However, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him
Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb
Now hath my soul been troubled, and what? shall I say -- Father, save me from this hour? -- but because of this I came to this hour;
the multitude, therefore, having stood and heard, were saying that there hath been thunder; others said, 'A messenger hath spoken to him.'
Jesus answered and said, This voice has not been for me, but for you.
Now for all the Signs he had performed before them, they did not believe in him ??38 that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: Lord, who has believed what they heard from us, And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
so that the passage of Esaias the prophet was fulfilled, where he says, "Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
And supper having been, the devil having already cast into the heart of Judas Iscariot, of Simon, that he should deliver him up;
Jesus saith to him, 'He who hath been bathed hath no need save to wash his feet, but he is clean altogether; and ye are clean, but not all;'
after he had washed their feet, he took his garment, and setting down again, he said to them, do you comprehend what I have been doing?
"Do you understand what I have been doing to you? You call me 'Teacher' and 'Master', and you say well, for such I am.
for I have been setting you an example, that you should do what I have done to you.
One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus kept loving, had been sitting very close to him.
When he had left, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in Him,
If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.
In my Father's Home there are many dwellings. If it had not been so, I should have told you, for I am going to prepare a place for you.
If ye had been getting to know me, my Father also, had ye known: from henceforth, are ye getting to know him, and have seen him.
Jesus said to him, have I been with you so long, and don't you know me yet? Philip, he that hath seen me, hath seen the father; why then do you say, shew us the father?
Believe me, I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Otherwise, believe me because of what I've been doing.
Judas says to him, not Iscariot, Lord, how has it been that thou art about to make thyself manifest to us, and not to the world?
These things have I spoken unto you, while I have been with you.
You heard me say to you, 'I am going away and I am returning to you.' If you [really] loved me, you would have been happy that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am.
You people are already 'clean' [i.e., have been pruned of undesirable traits] because of [obedience to] the teaching I have given you.
if of the world ye were, the world its own would have been loving, and because of the world ye are not -- but I chose out of the world -- because of this the world hateth you.
remember what I told you, "the servant is not greater than his master." if they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have been spies upon my discourse, they will be so upon yours.
if I had not appear'd, and inform'd them, they would have been innocent: but now they have no excuse for their sin.
if I had not done among them such works as no other ever did, they had been innocent: but though they have seen them, yet they hate both me and my father.
but this they do, that the word may be fulfilled, which has been written in their law, 'They hated Me without a cause.'
and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
Although your hearts are full of sorrow at all that I have been saying to you.
and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world hath been judged.
for the Father himself is a friend to you, because you have been friends to me, and believed that I came forth from God.
I have glorified Thee on earth, having done perfectly the work which by Thine appointment has been mine to do.
for I have given them the truths that you gave me, and they have accepted them and been convinced that I came from you, and they believe that you sent me.
and all mine are Thine, and Thine are mine, and I have been glorified in them;
Whilst I was with them, I kept them by that revelation, and I have guarded them; and not one of them has been lost, except that lost soul--in fulfillment of Scripture.
I, in them and, thou, in me; That they may have been perfected into, one, - That the world may get to know, that, thou, didst send me forth, and didst love them even as thou didst love, me.
Now, Judas also, who was delivering him up, knew the place: because, oft, had Jesus been gathered there, with his disciples.
Now when Jesus had said to them, "I am [He]," they [all] moved backward and fell to the ground. [Note: This appears to have been done by some miraculous power].
Now Simon Peter had been standing and warming himself [by the outdoor charcoal fire]. So, someone asked him, "Are you not one of His disciples, too?" Peter denied it, saying, "[No], I am not."
One of the servants of the high priest, a relation of him whose ear had been cut off by Peter, said, Did I not see you with him in the garden?
They answered and said unto him - If this one had not been doing, mischief, unto thee, had we not delivered him up.
Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would have been fighting to keep me from being turned over to the Jews. But as a matter of fact, my kingdom does not come from such a source."
Pilate, therefore, said to him, 'Art thou then a king?' Jesus answered, 'Thou dost say it; because a king I am, I for this have been born, and for this I have come to the world, that I may testify to the truth; every one who is of the truth, doth hear my voice.'
Jesus answered, 'Thou wouldest have no authority against me, if it were not having been given thee from above; because of this, he who is delivering me up to thee hath greater sin.'
Now it was about six o'clock in the morning [Note: This was according to Roman time, but if Jewish time were meant, it would have been
this title, therefore, read many of the Jews, because the place was nigh to the city where Jesus was crucified, and it was having been written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Roman.
Then the soldiers, when they crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part: and also the coat: and the coat was unsewn through the whole, having been woven from above.
After this, Jesus knowing that all things now have been finished, that the Writing may be fulfilled, saith, 'I thirst;'
Now a vessel full of vinegar had been set there; and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon a hyssop-stalk, and put it to his mouth.
when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, he said, 'It hath been finished;' and having bowed the head, gave up the spirit.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him.
and having come to Jesus, when they saw him already having been dead, they did not break his legs;
After these things, Joseph from Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but having been hidden on account of the fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted. Then he came and took the body of Jesus.
There was a garden in the place where He was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it.
And on the first of the sabbaths, Mary the Magdalene doth come early (there being yet darkness) to the tomb, and she seeth the stone having been taken away out of the tomb,
Then Simon Peter, who had been following him, also arrived and went [straight] into the cave-like tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.
and the napkin that was upon his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but apart, having been folded up, in one place;
Then the other disciple, who had been the first to come to the tomb, also went in and saw and was convinced.
one at the head, and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been laid.
Jesus said unto her, "Woman why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou?" She, supposing that he had been the gardener, said unto him, "Sir if thou have borne him hence tell me where thou hast laid him, that I may fetch him."
It being, therefore, evening, on that day, the first of the sabbaths, and the doors having been shut where the disciples were assembled, through fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith to them, 'Peace to you;'
if of any ye may loose the sins, they are loosed to them; if of any ye may retain, they have been retained.'
And after eight days, again were his disciples within, and Thomas with them; Jesus cometh, the doors having been shut, and he stood in the midst, and said, 'Peace to you!'
Many other signs, therefore, did Jesus in the presence of the disciples, which have not been written in this book;
and these have been written that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye may have life in his name.'
This made the disciple whom Jesus loved say to Peter, "It is the Master." Simon Peter therefore, when he heard the words, "It is the Master," drew on his fisherman's shirt--for he had not been wearing it--put on his girdle, and sprang into the water.
So Simon Peter got into the boat and hauled the net ashore full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and yet, although there were so many, the net had not been torn.
this is now a third time Jesus was manifested to his disciples, having been raised from the dead.
Now, following His death on the cross [and resurrection], Jesus appeared alive [to His apostles] for forty days, and demonstrated by many convincing proofs [that He had been raised bodily from the dead]. [During that time] He also spoke to them about the [coming] kingdom of God.
And while in assembly with them, he commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for what had been promised by the Father, which [said he] ye heard from me;
They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen Him going into heaven.”
When they reached the city, they went to the room upstairs where they had been staying; they were: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alpheus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
and said, men and brethren, the prediction which the holy ghost made, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who was guide to those that seiz'd Jesus, must have been accomplished.
for he was numbered with us, and had been appointed to this ministry.
for it hath been written in the book of Psalms: Let his lodging-place become desolate, and let no one be dwelling in it, and his oversight let another take.
For this reason, of the men who have been with us all the time, while the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
And they appointed two, Joseph, who was called Barsabas, who had been surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
And they made prayers and said, Lord, having knowledge of the hearts of all men, make clear which of these two has been marked out by you,
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as it had been the coming of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they sat.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues, like as they had been fire, and it sat upon each of them:
And there having been this voice, the multitude came together, and were disturbed, for each one heard them speaking in his own dialect.
and how do we hear them each in our own dialect in which we have been born,
And others, mocking, said, "They have been filled with new wine!"
