And this is eternal life: to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent Jesus the Messiah.
And now no longer am I in this world, but these are in the world, and I am coming to thee. Holy Father! preserve them for thy name's sake whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
I protected them while I was with them by [the power of] your name which you gave me. [See verse 11]. I guarded them so that not one of them was lost except the "son of destruction" [i.e., Judas]. [This was] so that the Scripture would be fulfilled [Psa. 41:9 ?].
But now I am coming to you, and I say this here in this world in order that they may have the happiness that I feel fully realized in their own hearts.
I in them, and you in me, so that they may be completely one. [This is] so the world will know that you sent me and that you love them just as you love me.
After Jesus had said all of this, he went with his disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.
Judas the Traitor also knew this place; for Jesus and his disciples often met there.
Now when Jesus had said to them, "I am [He]," they [all] moved backward and fell to the ground. [Note: This appears to have been done by some miraculous power].
This was to fulfill what he had said, "I did not lose a single one of those you gave me."
At this, Simon Peter, who had a sword with him, drew it, and struck the High Priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
They led Him to Annas first [Note: This man was a former head priest. See Luke 3:2], for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was head priest that year.
(It was this Caiaphas who had advised the Jews, saying, "It is to your interest that one man should die for the People.")
Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. As this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.
Peter, however, stood outside the gate. So this other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter inside.
The young woman at the gate asked Peter, "You aren't one of this man's disciples, too, are you?" "I am not," he replied.
While this was happening, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
When he said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Jesus on the face and demanded, "Is that any way to answer the high priest?"
& 25] Simon Peter followed Jesus along with another disciple; and as this disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest, he passed into the courtyard of the high priest with Jesus,
Meanwhile Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Then said they to him, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
but Peter denied this too, and immediately the cock crew.
Then, early in the morning they led Jesus from Caiaphas to [governor Pilate's] headquarters. But the Jewish authorities would not enter it, because [if they had] they would have become ceremonially unclean, and could not eat the Passover meal. [Note: This was because they regarded a Gentile house as defiling].
So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What accusation are you bringing against this man?"
They answered and said unto him, If this man were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up unto thee.
The Jewish leaders told him, "It is not legal for us to put anyone to death." This was to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.
Jesus replied, "Are you asking this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about me?"
Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my servants would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But for now my kingdom is not from here."
Pilate asked him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. I was born for this, and I came into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is committed to the truth listens to my voice."
Pilate saith to him, 'What is truth?' and this having said, again he went forth unto the Jews, and saith to them, 'I do find no fault in him;
"I find no crime in this man. Now it is a custom of yours that I release one prisoner to you at the time of the Passover feast. Do you wish me to release to you the King of the Jews?"
At this, they shouted out again, "Not this fellow, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.
When Pilate heard this, he became even more afraid.
Jesus answered, 'Thou wouldest have no authority against me, if it were not having been given thee from above; because of this, he who is delivering me up to thee hath greater sin.'
From then on, Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, "If you release this fellow, you're not a friend of Caesar! Anyone who claims to be a king is defying Caesar!"
Pilate, therefore, having heard this word, brought Jesus without -- and he sat down upon the tribunal -- to a place called, 'Pavement,' and in Hebrew, Gabbatha;
Now it was about six o'clock in the morning [Note: This was according to Roman time, but if Jewish time were meant, it would have been
Upon this they cried out, Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him! Pilate saith to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side, and on that side, and Jesus in the midst.
And Pilate also wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And this was the writing: JESUS THE NAZAREAN, THE KING OF THE JEWS,
Many Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
Then the Jewish high priests told Pilate, "Don't write, "The King of the Jews,' but that this fellow said, "I am the King of the Jews.'"
So they told each other, "Let's not tear it. Instead, let's throw dice to see who gets it." This was to fulfill the Scripture that says, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they threw dice." So that is what the soldiers did.
Then He said to the disciple, "Look, [here is] your mother!" And from that time onward, this disciple took Jesus' mother to [live in] his own home.
After this, when Jesus realized that everything was now completed, he said (in order to fulfill the Scripture), "I'm thirsty."
There was a jar of wine standing there. With this wine they filled a sponge, put it on the end of a stalk of hyssop, and lifted it to His mouth.
Now it was the Day of Preparation [Note: This was the day before the Passover Festival began, and fell on a Friday that year], and the Jews did not permit bodies to remain on a cross over the Sabbath day. (Besides, that Sabbath day was a special day [i.e., since it was both the Passover and the regular weekly Sabbath, as well]). So, they asked Pilate to have Jesus' and the criminals' legs broken [i.e., to speed up their deaths] and then have their bodies taken away.
But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead by this time, and so his legs were not broken;
The one who saw this has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows he is telling the truth so that you, too, may believe,
For this happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Not one of his bones shall be broken.
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, a disciple of Jesus (but secretly, because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he went and took the body away.
as this sepulchre was nigh at hand, they laid Jesus therein, because the time of the preparation of the Jews was expiring.
upon this she went in great haste to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, they have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
So Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb.
At this point Simon Peter arrived, following him, and went straight into the tomb. He observed that the linen cloths were lying there,
Upon this the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, went inside too, and when he saw for himself he was convinced.
After this the disciples return'd to their own home.
After she had said this, she turned around and noticed Jesus standing there, without realizing that it was Jesus.
"Do not cling to me," said Jesus, "for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But take this message to my brethren: 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"
Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that He had told her this.
After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side, and when they saw the Lord, the disciples were overjoyed.
When he had said this, he breathed on them and told them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
Eight days later [i.e., the following Sunday], Jesus' disciples were inside [the house] again, [but this time] Thomas was with them. The doors were [still] closed when Jesus [suddenly] stood among them [See note on verse 19] and said, "May there be peace in your hearts."
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not recorded in this book.
But these are recorded, so that you may have faith that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and so that, having this faith you may have life in his name.
Later on, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. This is what happened:
It was in this way:--Simon Peter, Thomas, who was called 'The Twin,' Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, Zebediah's sons, and two other disciples of Jesus, were together, when Simon Peter said:
But, morning by this time drawing on, Jesus stood upon the beach; nevertheless, the disciples knew not that it was, Jesus.
So he told them, "Throw your net on the right of the boat, and you will have a take." At this they threw the net, and now they could not haul it in for the mass of fish.
Upon this the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter: "It is the Master!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Master, he fastened his coat round him (for he had taken it off), and threw himself into the Sea.
So Simon Peter went and dragged the net to shore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; but for all this number the net was not torn.
"Come this way and have breakfast," said Jesus. But not one of the disciples ventured to question Him as to who He was, for they felt sure that it was the Master.
This was now the third time that Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after he had been raised from the dead.
So, after they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you really love me more than these [other disciples do]?" Peter answered Him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." [Note: Since two different Greek words for "love" are used in this conversation, some scholars see a distinction in their meaning. See Butler, Vol. II, pp. 453-457 for a discussion of these views]. Jesus replied to him, "[Then] feed my lambs."
Now he said this to show by what kind of death he would glorify God. After saying this, Jesus told him, "Keep following me."
Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. (This was the disciple who had leaned back against Jesus' chest at the meal and asked, "Lord, who is the one who is going to betray you?")
Peter having seen this one, saith to Jesus, 'Lord, and what of this one?'
Jesus saith to him, 'If him I will to remain till I come, what -- to thee? be thou following me.' This word, therefore, went forth to the brethren that that disciple doth not die,
So the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple wasn't going to die. Yet Jesus didn't say to Peter that he wasn't going to die, but, "If it's my will for him to remain until I come back, how does that concern you?"
This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them down. We know that his testimony is true.
And once when he was eating with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father. "Of this," he said, "you have heard from me.
For John baptised with water but ye shall be baptised with the holy ghost, and that within this few days."
Now those who had gathered together began to ask Jesus, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?"
Jesus replied, "You are not permitted to know the [specific] time or date [when this will happen]. For the Father has appointed it [to happen] when He determines [the right time].
After saying this, Jesus was taken up while those who had gathered together were watching, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
They asked, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you saw him go up into heaven."
'Men, brethren, it behoved this Writing that it be fulfilled that beforehand the Holy Spirit spake through the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who became guide to those who took Jesus,
because he was one of our number and was appointed to share in this ministry."
(Now this man bought a field with the money he got for his crime. Falling on his face, he burst open in the middle, and all his intestines gushed out.
This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that this field is called in their language Hakeldama, that is, "The Field of Blood".)
For this reason, of the men who have been with us all the time, while the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
beginning when he was baptized by John until the day he was taken up from us. Therefore, someone like this must become a witness with us to his resurrection."
And they offered this prayer--"O Lord, who reads all hearts, show which of these two men you have chosen
to serve in this office of apostle, from which Judas left to go to his own place."
And when the day of Pentecost came [Note: This was a Jewish festival held fifty days following the Passover Festival. Lev. 23:15-21], they [i.e., the twelve apostles] were all gathered together in one place [i.e., their second story living quarters, 1:13 ?].
when suddenly there came from the sky a sound as of a strong rushing blast of wind. This filled the whole house where they were sitting;
and the rumour of this having come, the multitude came together, and was confounded, because they were each one hearing them speaking in his proper dialect,
All of them continued to be stunned and puzzled, and they kept asking one another, "What can this mean?"
and Peter having stood up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and declared to them, 'Men, Jews! and all those dwelling in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and harken to my sayings,
