220

And if any soul shall sin through ignorance, then he shall bring a she-goat of the first year for a sin-offering.

221

Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them.

But if the LORD shall make a new thing, and the earth shall open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain to them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

417

And they brought their offering before the LORD, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they brought them before the tabernacle.

418

Speak to the congregation, saying, Withdraw yourselves from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

419

If a man shall vow a vow to the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.

420

And Moses rose up, and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

421

And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them to the Levites.

422

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

423

One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt-offering:

424

On the fourth day Elizur the son of Shedeur, prince of the children of Reuben, offered:

425

Surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:

426

Even all they that were numbered, were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

427

But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.

428

And one goat for a sin-offering; besides the continual burnt-offering, its meat-offering, and its drink-offering.

429

At the commandment of the LORD they rested in the tents, and at the commandment of the LORD they journeyed: they kept the charge of the LORD, at the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

430

One golden spoon of ten shekels, full of incense:

431

And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.

432

And his host, and those that were numbered of it, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.

433

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.

434

But the soul that doeth aught presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

435

And when king Arad the Canaanite, who dwelt in the south, heard that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.

436

One kid of the goats for a sin-offering:

437

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

438

And there were certain men, who were defiled by the dead body of a man, that they could not keep the passover on that day: and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day:

439

Speak to the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes on the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribin of blue:

440

His offering was one silver charger, the weight of which was a hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat-offering:

441

Let the children of Israel also keep the passover at its appointed season.

442

And the children of Israel moved forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side of Jordan by Jericho.

443

Or whether it was two days, or a month, or a year, that the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle, remaining upon it, the children of Israel abode in their tents, and journeyed not: but when it was taken up, they journeyed.

444

And when the tabernacle moveth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

445

His offering was one silver charger, of the weight of a hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat-offering:

446

But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as a heave-offering to the LORD, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said to them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.

447

In the fourteenth day of this month, at evening, ye shall keep it in its appointed season: according to all its rites, and according to all its ceremonies, shall ye keep it.

448

Doubtless ye shall not come into the land concerning which I swore to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

449

Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.

450

Your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,

451

But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land into which he went; and his seed shall possess it.

452

Then the tribe of Zebulun: and Eliab the son of Helon shall be captain of the children of Zebulun.

453

One kid of the goats for a sin-offering:

454

And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

455

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

457

And on the east side towards the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch throughout their armies: and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah.

458

And they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month at evening in the wilderness of Sinai: according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel.

459

Ye shall offer them besides the continual burnt-offering and his meat-offering (they shall be to you without blemish) and their drink-offerings.

460

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

461

And Balak brought Balaam to the top of Peor, that looketh towards Jeshimon.

462

And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves around the camp.

463

And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

464

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

465

And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

466

And Moses said to them, Stand still, and I will hear what the LORD will command concerning you.

467

And those men said to him, We are defiled by the dead body of a man: why are we kept back, that we may not offer an offering of the LORD in its appointed season among the children of Israel?

468

And the angel of the LORD said to him, Why hast thou smitten thy ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:

469

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

470

Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up to mount Hor:

471

Thus speak to the Levites, and say to them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up a heave-offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.

472

Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.

473

And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

474

And the LORD said to Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

475

And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, who come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

476

And Moses spoke to the children of Israel, that they should keep the passover.

477

Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

478

And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of the house of his fathers.

479

And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

480

Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity to Sihon king of the Amorites.

481

And they told him, and said, We came to the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

482

And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained to Korah, and all their goods.

483

And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Israel died.

484

Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that behold, the place was a place for cattle;

485

And he spoke to the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.

486

Speak to the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD, and that person shall be guilty;

487

And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your lewd deeds, until your carcasses shall be wasted in the wilderness.

488

For the LORD had spoken to Moses, saying,

489

And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

491

And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground cleaved asunder that was under them:

492

On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies: and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.

493

And they returned from exploring the land after forty days.

494

But the Levites, after the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them.

495

And Balaam rose in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

496

And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

497

And Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters: and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

498

How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.

499

And the LORD said to Moses, Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them to the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.

500

After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days (each day for a year) shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.

501

Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

502

And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:

503

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

504

And Balaam said to the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in my hand, for now would I kill thee.

505

And Moses did as the LORD commanded: and they ascended mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.

506

Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel:

507

And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

508

(Now the Amalekites, and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To-morrow turn you, and pass into the wilderness, by the way of the Red sea.

509

And Balaam said to Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.

510

They, and all that appertained to them went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.

511

And he said, Hear now my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known to him in a vision, and will speak to him in a dream.

512

So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;

513

And they brought an evil report of the land which they had searched to the children of Israel, saying, The land through which we have passed to search it, is a land that eateth up its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it, are men of a great stature.

514

Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.

515

And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets to you.

516

The LORD is long-suffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation.

517

And the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Why have ye brought us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul lotheth this light bread.

518

And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

519

Of Zebulun; Eliab the son of Helon.

520

Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!

521

And the LORD said to Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shown among them?

522

If these men shall die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me.

523

All that were numbered in the camp of Judah were a hundred thousand and eighty thousand and six thousand and four hundred throughout their armies: these shall first move forward.

524

Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.

525

And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered to his people, and shall die there.

526

So they withdrew from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.

527

And his host, and those that were numbered of it, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.

528

And the LORD said to Aaron, Thou and thy sons and thy father's house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary: and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.

529

Of the children of Naphtali, throughout their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

530

These are the sons of Ephraim after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthalhites: of Becher, the family of the Bachrites: of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites.

531

And the LORD said to Moses, Take to thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thy hand upon him;

532

And the ass said to Balaam, Am not I thy ass, upon which thou hast rid ever since I was thine to this day? was I ever wont to do so to thee? And he said, Nay.

533

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.

534

Nevertheless, the people are strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover, we saw the children of Anak there.

535

Say to them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you:

536

And Moses said, by this ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works: for I have not done them of my own mind.

537

And on the seventh day seven bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish:

538

And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

539

And the LORD said to Moses, Ascend this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the children of Israel.

540

And it came to pass, when the ark moved forward, that Moses said, Arise, LORD, and let thy enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee.

541

And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are around us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.

542

And on the fourteenth day of the first month is the passover of the LORD.

543

He sent messengers therefore to Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there has a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:

544

And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

545

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

546

And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

547

The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

548

For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

549

And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,

550

And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days' journey: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days' journey, to seek a resting-place for them.

551

And Israel vowed a vow to the LORD, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

552

And those who pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simeon: and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

553

This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, in which is no blemish, and upon which never came a yoke:

554

But the men that went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.

555

And they assembled themselves against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: why then do ye raise yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?

556

And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

557

And the persons were sixteen thousand, of which the LORD'S tribute was thirty and two persons.

558

So ye shall not pollute the land in which ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him that shed it.

559

The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.

560

But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.

561

And Balaam said to Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams.

562

And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts.

563

And the people journeyed from Kibroth-hattaavah to Hazeroth: and abode at Hazeroth.

564

And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:

566

Speak to the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers, twelve rods: write thou every man's name upon his rod.

567

And the LORD spoke to Aaron, Behold, I also have given thee the charge of my heave-offerings of all the hallowed things of the children of Israel; to thee have I given them by reason of the anointing, and to thy sons, by an ordinance for ever.

568

And the children of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish.

569

Whoever killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.

570

On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim, according to their armies: and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud.

571

And of Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites: and of Hepher, the family of the Hepherites.

572

And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the LORD: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.

573

And the half which was the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and seven and thirty thousand and five hundred sheep:

574

And thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou with thee, that they may be joined to thee, and minister to thee: but thou and thy sons with thee shall minister before the tabernacle of witness.

575

God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of a unicorn.

576

And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said to them, O that we had died in the land of Egypt! or O that we had died in this wilderness!

577

He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.

578

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

579

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and conducted him to the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.

580

Also in the day of the first-fruits, when ye bring a new meat-offering to the LORD, after your weeks are ended, ye shall have a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work:

581

And Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displeaseth thee, I will return again.

582

And they warred against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they slew all the males.

583

Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

584

Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

585

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

586

Take the rod, and convene thou the assembly, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye to the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth its water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give drink to the congregation and their beasts.

587

And Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded.

588

All that were numbered in the camp of Reuben were a hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty, throughout their armies: and they shall move forward in the second rank.

589

And it came to pass after the plague, that the LORD spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying,

590

Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD, in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.

591

And Moses, by the commandment of the LORD, sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.

592

And Moses said to the LORD, Then the Egyptians will hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)

593

And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast to the LORD seven days:

594

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

595

And when Moses had entered into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking to him from off the mercy-seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubim: and he spoke to him.

596

And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes, and the spirit of God came upon him.

597

And on the sabbath-day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth-parts of flour for a meat-offering, mingled with oil, and its drink-offering.

598

And the priest shall make an atonement for all the congregation of the children of Israel, and it shall be forgiven them; for it is ignorance: and they shall bring their offering, a sacrifice made by fire to the LORD, and their sin-offering before the LORD, for their ignorance:

599

And Moses told these sayings to all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.

600

And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

601

And there was no water for the congregation: and they assembled themselves against Moses and against Aaron.

602

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, (while he was zealous for my sake among them,) that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

603

Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall move forward with the camp of the Levites, in the midst of the camp: as they encamp, so shall they move forward, every man in his place by their standards.

604

And Moses lifted his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

605

Command the children of Israel, and say to them, My offering, and my bread for my sacrifices made by fire, for a sweet savor to me, shall ye observe to offer to me in their due season.

606

And Nebo, and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names to the cities which they built.

607

And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.

608

Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.

609

Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.

610

And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim,

611

On the eighth day ye shall have a solemn assembly: in it ye shall do no servile work.

612

But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the LORD.

613

These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers.

614

And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.

615

And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there on the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.

616

And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.

617

Then the tribe of Gad: and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.

618
