and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered him, "So far from that, we never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."

So they kept on shouting, some one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and the majority of them did not know why they had met.

For we are in danger of being charged with rioting for today's assembly, as there is not a single reason we can give for it."

and a young man named Eutychus, who was sitting by the window, was gradually overcome by heavy drowsiness, as Paul kept speaking longer and longer, and at last he went fast asleep and fell from the third story to the ground and was picked up dead.

I therefore protest to you today that I am not responsible for the blood of any of you,

"I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up here in this city, and carefully educated under the teaching of Gamaliel in the law of our forefathers. I was zealous for God, as all of you are today.

The men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice of Him who was speaking to me.

came to see me, and standing by my side said to me, 'Saul, my brother, recover your sight!' Then instantly I did recover it and looked at him,

Paul answered, "I did not know, brothers, that he was high priest, for the Scripture says, 'You must not speak evil against any ruler of your people.'"

Because Paul knew that part of them were Sadducees and part of them Pharisees, he began to cry out in the council chamber, "Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a Pharisee's son, and now I am on trial for the hope of the resurrection of the dead."

unless it is for one thing that I shouted out as I stood among them, 'It is for the resurrection of the dead that I am here on trial before you today.'"

But when his accusers appeared before me, they did not charge him with the crimes of which I had been suspecting him.

"I count myself fortunate, King Agrippa," said he, "that it is before you that I can defend myself today against all the charges which the Jews have preferred against me,

Why is it considered incredible by all of you that God should raise the dead?

That was what I did at Jerusalem; yes, I received authority from the high priests and shut behind the prison bars many of God's people. Yes, when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them, and often in all the synagogues

if the Christ should suffer, and by being the first to rise from the dead was to proclaim the light to the Jewish people and to the heathen."

The king, indeed, knows about this and I can speak to him with freedom. I do not believe that any of this escaped his notice, for it did not occur in a corner!

Paul answered, "In brief or at length, I would to God that not only you but all my hearers today were what I am -- excepting these chains!"

For a number of days we sailed on slowly and with difficulty arrived off Cnidus. Then, because the wind did not permit us to go on, we sailed under the lee of Crete off Cape Salmone,

Until day was about to break Paul kept begging them all to take something to eat. He said, "For fourteen days today you have been constantly waiting and going without food, not even taking a bite.

The natives kept on looking for him to swell up or suddenly drop dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual take place on him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

When we did arrive at Rome, Paul was granted permission to live by himself -- excepting a soldier to guard him.

For this people's soul has grown dull, and they scarcely hear with their ears, and they have shut tight their eyes, so that they may never see with their eyes, and understand with their souls, and turn to me, that I may cure them."'

proved to be God's Son in power by the resurrection from the dead -- I mean, Jesus Christ, our Lord,

because, although they once knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give Him thanks, but became silly in their senseless speculations, and so their insensible hearts have been shrouded in darkness.

And so, as they did not approve of fully recognizing God any longer, God gave them up to minds that He did not approve, to practices that were improper;

For if he was considered in right standing with God on the condition of what he did, he has something to boast of, but not before God.

as the Scripture says, "I have made you the father of many nations." That is, the promise is in force in the sight of God in whom he put his faith, the God who can bring the dead to life and can call to Himself the things that do not exist as though they did.

it was for our sakes too, for it is going to be credited to us who put our faith in God who raised from the dead our Lord Jesus,

So through baptism we have been buried with Him in death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father's glorious power, so we too should live an entirely new life.

For when a man is dead, he is freed from the claims of sin.

for we know that Christ, who once was raised from the dead, will never die again; death has no more power over Him.

and you must stop offering to sin the parts of your bodies as instruments for wrongdoing, but you must once for all offer yourselves to God as persons raised from the dead to live on perpetually, and once for all offer the parts of your bodies to God as instruments for right-doing.

What benefit did you then derive from doing the things of which you are now ashamed? None, for they end in death.

So, my brothers, you too in the body of Christ have ended your relation to the law, so that you may be married to another husband, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.

Did that which is good, then, result in death to me? Of course not! It was sin that did it, so that it might show itself as sin, for by means of that good thing it brought about my death, so that through the command sin might appear surpassingly sinful.

If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead has His home within you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give your mortal bodies life through His Spirit that has His home within you.

For nature did not of its own accord give up to failure; it was for the sake of Him who let it thus be given up, in the hope

Since He did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, will He not with Him graciously give us everything else?

who can condemn them? Christ Jesus who died, or rather, who was raised from the dead, is now at God's right hand, and is actually pleading for us.

On the contrary, friend, who are you anyway that you would answer back to God? Can the clay that is molded ask the man who molds it, "Why did you make me like this?"

As Isaiah again has foretold, "Unless the Lord of hosts had left us some descendants, we would have fared as Sodom did and would have been like Gomorrah."

while Israel, though ever in pursuit of a law that would bring right standing, did not attain to it.

Why? Because they did not try through faith but through what they could do. They have stumbled over the stone that causes people to stumble,

or "'Who will go down into the depths?'" that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.

For if with your lips you acknowledge the fact that Jesus is Lord, and in your hearts you believe that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

But may I ask, They had no chance to hear, did they? Yes, indeed: "All over the earth their voices have gone, to the ends of the world their words."

But again I ask, Israel did not understand, did they? For in the first place Moses says: "I will make you jealous of a nation that is no nation; I will provoke you to anger at a senseless nation."

But how did God reply to him? "I have reserved for myself seven thousand men who have never bent their knees to Baal."

I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall in utter ruin, did they? Of course not! On the contrary, because of their stumbling, salvation has come to heathen peoples, to make the Israelites jealous.

For if the rejection of them has resulted in the reconciling of the world, what will the result be of the final reception of them but life from the dead?

for if God did not spare the natural branches, certainly He will not spare you.

For Christ died and lived again for the very purpose of being Lord of both the dead and the living.

But the man who has misgivings about eating, if he then eats, has already condemned himself by so doing, because he did not follow his faith, and any action that does not follow one's faith is a sin.

Christ certainly did not please Himself; instead, as the Scripture says, "The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen upon me."

Remember me to Andronicus and Junias, my fellow-country-men, who also served in prison with me; they are held in high esteem among the apostles, and became Christians before I did.

Yes, I did baptize the family of Stephanas, too; I do not now recall that I baptized anyone else.

For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the good news -- but not by means of wisdom and rhetoric, so that the cross of Christ may not be emptied of its power.

Now when I came to you, brothers, I did not come and tell you God's uncovered secret in rhetorical language or human philosophy,

I did the planting, Apollos did the watering, but it was God who kept the plants growing.

For who makes you superior? And what do you have that you did not get from someone? But if you got it from someone, why do you boast as though you had not?

and those that mourn as though they did not mourn, and those who are glad as though they were not glad, and those who buy as though they did not own a thing,

Now all these things occurred as warnings to us, to keep us from hankering after what is evil, in the ways they did.

Let us stop practicing immorality, as some of them did, and on one day twenty-three thousand fell dead.

Let us stop trying the Lord's patience, as some of them did, and for it were destroyed by the snakes.

You must stop grumbling, as some of them did, and for it were destroyed by the destroying angel.

For man did not originate from woman, but woman did from man,

Did the message of God begin with you Corinthians? Or, are you the only people it has reached?

that He was buried, that on the third day He was raised from the dead, in accordance with the Scriptures,

Now if we preach that Christ has been raised from the dead, how is it that some of you are saying that there is no such thing as a resurrection of the dead?

If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised,

and we are found guilty of lying about God, for we have testified that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if indeed the dead are never raised.

For if the dead are never raised, Christ has not been raised;

But in reality Christ has been raised from the dead, the first to be raised of those who have fallen asleep.

For since it was through a man that death resulted, it was also through a man that the resurrection of the dead resulted.

Otherwise, what do those people mean who submit to being baptized on behalf of their dead? If the dead are never raised at all, why do they submit to being baptized on their behalf?

If from merely human motives I have fought wild beasts here in Ephesus, what profit will it be to me? If the dead are never raised at all, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall be dead."

But someone will ask, "How can the dead rise? With what kind of body do they come back?"

It is just like this with the resurrection of the dead.

in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the sound of the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised with bodies not subject to decay, and we shall be changed.

Yes, I felt within my very self the sentence of death, to keep me from depending on myself instead of God who raises the dead.

Now I did not resort to fickleness, did I, in planning that? Or, do I make my plans in accordance with worldly notions, to have my "Yes" mean "No," if I want it so?

For God's Son, Christ Jesus, who was preached among you by us, Silvanus, Timothy, and me, did not become a "Yes" that might mean "No."

This is the very thing I wrote you, that when I did come I might not be made sad by the very people who ought to make me glad, for I had confidence in you all that my gladness would be gladness to you all.

I had no rest of spirit, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and left for Macedonia.

not as Moses did, who used to wear a veil over his face, to keep the Israelites from gazing at the end of what was passing away.

because I know that He who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will raise me too in fellowship with you.

For if I did go crazy, it was for God's glory; and if I am keeping my head cool, it is for your good.

So from this moment on, I do not estimate anybody by the standard of outward appearances. Although I once did estimate Christ by this standard, I do not do so any longer.

For, although I did cause you sorrow by that letter, I do not now regret it; although I did regret it then. I see that the letter caused you sorrow only for a time.

So, although I did write to you, it was not for the offender's sake, nor for the offended party's sake, but in the sight of God for the sake of having your enthusiasm for me made perfectly clear to you. This is why I am so comforted.

They did not do as I expected but even more; they first by God's will gave themselves to the Lord, and then to me;

just as the Scripture says, "The man who gathered much did not have too much, and the man who gathered little did not have too little."

For if anybody comes along and preaches another Jesus than the one I preached, or you receive another spirit different from the one you did receive or a glad message different from the one you did accept, you listen to it all right!

Did I do wrong in taking a lowly place to let you have an exalted one, in that I preached the good news about God to you without accepting any pay?

I did not make any money out of you through anybody that I sent to you, did I?

I actually begged Titus to go, and sent the well-known brother with him. Titus did not make any money out of you, did he? Did not he and I act in the same spirit, and take the very same steps?

I have already warned those who formerly committed shocking sins, and all the rest, and though so far away I warn them now, as I did on my second visit, that if I come back I will not spare them,

Paul, an apostle sent not from men or by any man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead --

for I did not get it from any man; I was not taught it, but I got it through a revelation given by Jesus Christ.
