Jehovah gave to Israel all the land that he had solemnly promised their ancestors he would give them. They took possession of it and settled down there. Jehovah granted them peace throughout the land. This is just as he had promised their ancestors. Not one of all their enemies was able to stand against them, because Jehovah gave the Israelites the victory over all their enemies. Jehovah kept every one of the promises he made to the people of Israel.

Lift up your eyes to the bare hills and see. You have had sex with men in every place. You sat by the roadside waiting for them like a nomad in the desert. You have defiled (corrupted) (profaned) the land with your prostitution and wickedness.

They shed innocent blood, the blood of their own sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan. The land became polluted with blood.

I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and its produce. You came and made my land unclean. You made my heritage disgusting.

The land has become unclean. I will punish it for its sins. The land will vomit out those who live in it.

Do not defile the land where you are living! I am Jehovah and I live among the people of Israel.

Every living thing in the forest, even the cattle on a thousand hills, is mine.

([Psalm of David]) The earth and all it contains the world and those who dwell in it belong to Jehovah.

If you will obey me and are faithful to the terms of my covenant, then out of all the nations you will be my own special possession, for all the earth is mine.

No land may be permanently bought or sold. It all belongs to me! It is not your land! You only live there for a little while.

Yet my people and I cannot really give you anything. This is because everything is a gift from you, and we have only given back what is yours already.

Let your land rest the seventh year. Do not harvest anything that grows on it. The poor may eat what grows there. The wild animals may have what is left. Do the same with your vineyards and your olive trees.

But the seventh year is to be a sabbath year of complete rest for the land. It is a year dedicated to Jehovah. Do not plant your fields or prune your vineyards.

Release all debts at the end of every seven years.

Moses commanded them: At the end of every seven years, at the time of the year of remission of debts, at the Feast of Booths,

Every seven years each of you must free any Hebrews who sold themselves to you. When they have served you for six years, you must set them free. But your ancestors refused to obey me or listen to me.

In proportion to the extent of the years you shall increase its price, and in proportion to the fewness of the years you shall diminish its price, for it is a number of crops he is selling to you.

If you give your field in the jubilee year, it will have its full value. Should you give the field after the jubilee year, the priest will estimate its value based on the number of years left until the next jubilee year. If you do not buy it back and it is sold to someone else, it may not be redeemed. When the field is released in the jubilee year, it will be holy like a field claimed by Jehovah. It will become the property of the priest. You may give a field you bought, not one that was a part of your family property, to Jehovah as something holy. The priest must figure out the field's value until the jubilee year. You will pay its value on that day as something holy, belonging to Jehovah. In the jubilee year the field will go back to the person from whom it was bought, to whom it belongs as family property.

During the Year of Restoration, when all property that has been sold is restored to its original owners, the property of Zelophehad's daughters will be permanently added to the tribe into which they marry and will be lost to our tribe.

No land may be permanently bought or sold. It all belongs to me! It is not your land! You only live there for a little while. When property is sold, the original owner must be given the first chance to buy it. This is because the houses in the Levite cities are their property among the Israelites.

Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle is coming to you. He says: Buy for yourself my field at Anathoth, for you have the right of redemption to buy it.' Then Hanamel my uncle's son came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of Jehovah and said to me: 'Buy my field, please, that is at Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin. He sent other servants more in number than the first. They did the same to them. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'Certainly they will respect my son.' When the workmen saw the son, they said, 'Let us put him to death and take his heritage, for someday he will own this property.' They took him out of the vineyard and killed him. When the lord of the vineyard returns, what will he do to the workmen? They all said: He will put those cruel men to death. Then he will find other workmen who are worthy and who will give him fruit when it is ready.

He taught them with illustrations: A man had a vineyard planted. He built a wall around it. He prepared a place for crushing out the wine and put up a tower. Then he rented it out to field workers, and went into another country. During the season he sent a servant to the field workers that he might receive the fruits of the vineyard. Again he sent another servant and they treated him shamefully and wounded him in the head. He sent another and they killed him. He sent many others and some were beaten and some were killed. Last of all he sent his son saying: 'They will respect my son.' But those field workers said among themselves: This is the heir let us kill him and the inheritance shall be ours. They captured him and killed him. Then they cast his body out of the vineyard. What will the lord of the vineyard do? He will destroy the field workers and give the vineyard to others.

He told the people an illustration: A man planted a vineyard. He rented it to tenants and went to another country for a long time. At harvest time he sent a servant to the renters to collect fruit of the vineyard. The renters beat him, and sent him away empty. He sent another servant who was also treated shamefully, beaten and sent away empty. read more.
A third servant was sent. They wounded him and threw him out. The owner of the vineyard said, what should I do? I will send my beloved son. Maybe they will respect him. When the renters saw him they reasoned that this is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. They threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to them? He will come and destroy the renters and will give the vineyard to others. When they heard it, they said, God forbid!

Zelophehad, son of Hepher, grandson of Gilead, descendant of Machir, whose father was Manasseh, belonged to the families of Manasseh, son of Joseph. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They came to Moses and stood in front of him, the priest Eleazar, the leaders, and the entire congregation at the entrance to the tent of meeting. They said: Our father died in the desert. He was not a part of Korah's followers who joined forces against Jehovah. He died for his own sin and left no sons. read more.
Why should our father's name be allowed to die out in his family because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives. So Moses brought their case to Jehovah. Jehovah said to him: Zelophehad's daughters are right. You must give them property of their own among their father's relatives. Turn their father's property over to them. Tell the Israelites: 'If a man dies and leaves no sons, turn his property over to his daughters. If he has no daughters give his property to his brothers. If he has no brothers give his property to his uncles on his father's side of the family. If he has no uncles, give his property to the nearest relative in his family. That relative will take possession of it. This will be a rule for the Israelites, as Jehovah commanded Moses.'

The heads of the families in the clan of Gilead the son of Machir and grandson of Manasseh son of Joseph, went to Moses and the other leaders. They said: Jehovah commanded you to distribute the land to the people of Israel by drawing lots. He also commanded you to give the property of our relative Zelophehad to his daughters. Remember, if they marry men of another tribe, their property will then belong to that tribe, and the total allotted to us will be reduced. read more.

Zelophehad's daughters did as Jehovah commanded Moses. Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah married their cousins on their father's side of the family.

The only land he did not buy was the land that belonged to the priests. The king gave the priests an allowance to live on. So they did not have to sell their lands.

This holy area will belong to the priests. On the north side it will be forty-three thousand seven hundred and fifty feet long. On the west side it will be seventeen thousand five hundred feet wide. On the east side it will be seventeen thousand five hundred feet wide. On the south side it will be forty-three thousand seven hundred and fifty feet long. Jehovah's holy place will be in the middle of it.

Elisha told the woman who lived in Shunem, whose son he brought back to life: Jehovah is sending a famine on the land. It will last for seven years. Leave with your family and go live somewhere else. She followed his instructions and left with her family to live in Philistia for the seven years. When the seven years ended she returned to Israel. The king was talking with Gehazi, Elisha's servant, when she found him. The king wanted to know about Elisha's miracles. Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had brought a dead person back to life. The woman made her appeal to the king. Gehazi said to him: Your Majesty, here is the woman and here is her son whom Elisha brought back to life! She responded to the king's question by confirming Gehazi's story. The king called an official and told him to give back to her everything that was hers. This included the value of all the crops that her fields produced during the seven years she was away.

Whatever is left on the east side and west side of the holy area and the city property will belong to the prince. This land will extend eastward from the holy area to the eastern border, and it will extend westward to the western border. Both of these areas are as long as one of the sections of the tribes. These areas belong to the prince, and the holy area with the Holy Place of the Temple will be between them.

Divide it by drawing lots. This land will be for you. It will also be for the foreign residents who live among you and have given birth to children while they lived with you. Think of them as Israelites. They will draw lots with you for their inheritance among the tribes of Israel.

Yet others said: We have given up our fields and our vine-gardens to get money for the king's taxes. But our flesh is the same as the flesh of our countrymen, and our children as their children. Now we give our sons and daughters into the hands of others, to be their servants. Some of our daughters are servants even now. We have no power to stop this. For other men have our fields and our vine-gardens.

Then God said: Let the waters below the atmosphere be gathered into one place. Let the dry land appear. It was so.

If you did this, you would defile the land where you are living. Murder defiles the land, and except by the death of the murderer there is no way to perform the ritual of purification for the land where someone has been murdered.

He sent other servants more in number than the first. They did the same to them. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'Certainly they will respect my son.' When the workmen saw the son, they said, 'Let us put him to death and take his heritage, for someday he will own this property.' They took him out of the vineyard and killed him. When the lord of the vineyard returns, what will he do to the workmen? They all said: He will put those cruel men to death. Then he will find other workmen who are worthy and who will give him fruit when it is ready.

He told the people an illustration: A man planted a vineyard. He rented it to tenants and went to another country for a long time. At harvest time he sent a servant to the renters to collect fruit of the vineyard. The renters beat him, and sent him away empty. A third servant was sent. They wounded him and threw him out. The owner of the vineyard said, what should I do? I will send my beloved son. Maybe they will respect him. When the renters saw him they reasoned that this is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. They threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to them? He will come and destroy the renters and will give the vineyard to others. When they heard it, they said, God forbid!

He gathered all the food of these seven years that occurred in the land of Egypt and placed the food in the cities. He placed in every city the food from its own surrounding fields.
