Jesus left there and went into their [i.e., the Pharisees'] synagogues,

Then spake Jesus to the multitudes and to his disciples, saying, The scribes and Pharisees sit in the chair of Moses:

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Likewise the chief priests also mocking, with the scribes, the Pharisees, and the elders, said,

And it happened that he was reclining at table in his house; and many publicans and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many, and scribes of the Pharisees were also following him.

The Pharisees were watching Jesus closely to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him [in the Jewish high court].

Then He said to the Pharisees, "Is it permissible by the law of Moses to do something good, or something harmful on the Sabbath day? To save a life or to kill it?" But they did not reply.

And they asked him, saying, How is it that the Pharisees and scribes say that Elijah must come first?

When he was come to the other disciples, he found a great crowd about them, and the Pharisees disputing with them.

the Scribes and Pharisees upon hearing this consulted together how to destroy him; but they stood in awe of him, because all the people were strangely affected with his doctrine.

As Jesus was teaching in the Temple, He responded [to some Pharisees. See Matt. 22:41] by asking, "How is it that the experts in the law of Moses can say that the Christ is the son of David?

And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

But the experts in the law of Moses and the Pharisees became furious and began discussing among themselves what they could do to Jesus.

And lo! a woman who was in the city, a sinner, learning that he was at table in the Pharisees house, brought an alabasterbottle of ointment,

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.

Afterwards some of the Pharisees, who deny there is any resurrection, accosted him with this question,

Then certain of the Pharisees answered and said, "Master, thou hast well said."

And Jesus said to them [i.e., the Pharisees. See Matt. 22:41], "How is it that they [i.e., the experts in the law of Moses. See Mark 12:35] can say that the Christ [i.e., God's specially chosen one] is the son of David?

Then the officers returned to the chief priest and Pharisees,

Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

But these Jews [i.e., Pharisees] did not believe that the man had been blind and had received his sight back until they called his parents

The Pharisees said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he restore your sight?"

The man replied, "Is not that strange! You do not know where he came from and yet he restored my sight! [Note: The next sentence may be the beggar stating the Pharisees' argument. See verse 24].

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

And the Pharisees, who were covetous, heard all this, and they derided him.


And they send out to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and thou carest for no one; for thou regardest not the person of men.


In the mean time, when the multitude was gathered together in myriads, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples first, Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

Moreover, when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance; for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to be fasting. Truly do I say to you, They have received their reward. But do thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not to men to be fasting, but to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee.

Hear another parable. There was a householder, who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and dug in it a winepress, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went abroad. And when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive his fruits. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. read more.
Again he sent other servants more than the first; and they dealt with them in the same manner. And afterward he sent to them his son, saying, They will respect my son. But the husbandmen, when they saw the son, said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and get his inheritance. And they took him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. When therefore the lord of the vineyard cometh, what will he do to those husbandmen? They say to him, He will bring those wicked men to a miserable end, and will let out his vineyard to other husbandmen, who will render him the fruits in their season. Jesus saith to them, Did ye never read in the Scriptures, "The stone which the builders rejected, the same hath become the cornerstone; from the Lord did this come, and it is marvelous in our eyes?" Therefore I say to you, that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and given to a nation yielding the fruits thereof. (...) And the chief priests and the Pharisees when they heard his parables, knew that he was speaking of them. And they sought to seize him, but feared the multitudes, because they regarded him as a prophet.

Therefore when thou doest alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Truly do I say to you, They have received their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth; that thine alms may be in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee. read more.
And when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites are; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Truly do I say to you, They have received their reward. But do thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and, when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, will reward thee. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do; for they think that they shall be heard for the multitude of their words. Be not ye therefore like them; for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

Then come to Jesus Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said to them, Why do ye too transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? read more.
For God commanded, saying, "Honor thy father and thy mother;" and, "He that curseth father or mother, let him surely die." But ye say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, Whatever thou mightst receive in aid from me is a gift [to God], he shall not honor his father or his mother. Thus have ye made void the law of God for the sake of your tradition. Hypocrites! well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you, saying, "This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men."

And the Pharisees and Sadducees came to try him, and asked him to show them a sign from heaven. And he answering said to them, When it is evening, ye say, Fair weather! for the sky is red. And in the morning, A storm today! for the sky is red and lowering. Ye know how to judge of the face of the sky, and can ye not discern the signs of the times? read more.
A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and no sign will be given to it, but the sign of Jonah. And he left them and went away. And the disciples having come to the other side, had forgotten to take bread. And Jesus said to them, Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we took no bread. And Jesus knowing it, said, Why are ye reasoning among yourselves, ye of little faith, because ye took no bread? Do ye not yet understand, nor remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? How is it that ye do not understand, that I spoke not to you of loaves? But [I said] Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Then they understood, that he did not bid them beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in the seat of Moses. All, therefore, whatever they bid you, do and observe; but do not according to their works; for they say, and do not. They bind heavy burdens, and lay them on mens shoulders, and will not themselves move them with a finger. read more.
And all their works they do to be observed by men. They make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge their fringes, and love the first place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your teacher; and ye are all brethren. And call no one your father on the earth; for one is your father, he who is in heaven. Nor be ye called leaders; for one is your leader, the Christ. But the greatest among you will be your servant. And whoever shall exalt himself will be humbled; and whoever shall humble himself will be exalted. But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites I because ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for ye go not in yourselves, nor suffer those who are entering to go in. (...) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is made, ye make him twofold mole a son of hell than yourselves. Woe to you, blind guides, that say, Whoever sweareth by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever sweareth by the gold of the temple, is bound. Fools and blind I for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And, Whoever sweareth by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, is bound. Blind men! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar flint sanctifieth the gift? He then who sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all that is upon it; and he that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him who dwelleth in it; and he who sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth thereon. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithes of the mint, and the dill, and the cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the Law, justice, and mercy, and faith; these ought ye to have done, and not to leave those undone. Blind guides! who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and the platter, but within they are full of robbery and licentiousness. Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup, that its outside side also may become clean. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like whited sepulchres, which outwardly indeed appear beautiful, but within are full of dead mens bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous, and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. So that ye bear witness against yourselves, that ye are the sons of those who killed the prophets. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers! Serpents, brood of vipers! how can ye escape the punishment of hell?

And he was casting out a demon, and it was dumb; and it came to pass, when the demon had gone out, that the dumb man spoke. And the multitudes wondered. But some of them said, He casteth out the demons through Beelzebul, the prince of the demons; and others, to make trial of him, asked of him a sign from heaven. read more.
But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and house divided against house falleth. And if Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? For ye say that I cast out the demons through Beelzebul. But if I cast out the demons through Beelzebul, through whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore shall they be judges of you. But if I cast out the demons through the finger of God, then hath the kingdom of God already come to you. When a strong man armed guardeth his palace, his goods are in peace; but when one stronger than he cometh upon him and overcometh him, he taketh from him his whole armor wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. When the unclean spirit is gone out from a man, it goeth through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, it saith, I will return to my house whence I came out. And on coming, it findeth it swept and put in order. Then it goeth, and taketh with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they enter in, and dwell there; and the last state of that man becometh worse than the first. And it came to pass, as he was saying these things, that a certain woman lifted up her voice from the crowd, and said to him, Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the breasts from which thou drewest nourishment. But he said, Blessed rather are they that hear the word of God and keep it. And when the crowds were thronging about him, he began to say, This generation is a wicked generation; it seeketh a sign; and no sign will be given it, but the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so will also the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and will condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and lo! something more than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and lo! something more than Jonah is here. No one when he has lighted a lamp, puts it into a secret place, or under the bushel, but on the lampstand, that they who come in may see the light. The lamp of the body is thine eye. When thine eye is clear, thy whole body also is in the light; but when it is disordered, thy body also is in darkness. Take heed therefore, that the light which is within thee be not darkness. If then thy whole body is enlightened, having no part dark, the whole will be as fully enlightened, as when a lamp with its bright shining giveth thee light. And when he had done speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him. And he went in and reclined at the table. And the Pharisee, seeing it, wondered that he did not bathe before dinner. But the Lord said to him, Now ye Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inside is full of rapacity and wickedness. Fools, did not he who made the outside, make the inside also? But give what they contain in alms, and lo! all is clean to you. But woe to you Pharisees! for ye pay tithes of the mint, and the rue, and every herb; and pass by justice and the love of God. These ought ye to have done, and not to leave those undone. Woe to you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the markets. Woe to you, for ye are as tombs which are unseen, and men walking over them know it not. And one of the lawyers answering saith to him, Teacher, in saying these things, thou revilest us also. And he said, To you lawyers also, woe! for ye load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe to you! for ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. So then ye bear witness to and approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and ye are building [their tombs]. Therefore the wisdom of God also said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute; that the blood of all the prophets, which hath been shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was slain between the altar and the temple. Yea, I tell you, it will be required of this generation. Woe to you lawyers! because ye have taken away the key of knowledge; ye have not entered yourselves, and those who were entering ye have hindered. And as he came out thence, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very spiteful, and to press him to speak off hand about many things, lying in wait to catch something out of his mouth.

And all the publicans and the sinners were drawing near to him, to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. And he spoke to them this parable, saying, read more.
What man of you having a hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninetynine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he findeth it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he hath come home, he calleth together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say to you, that in like manner there will be joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninetynine righteous men who have no need of repentance. Or what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a lamp, and sweep the house, and search carefully till she findeth it? And when she hath found it, she calleth together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I lost.


Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Teacher, we wish to see a sign from thee. But he answered and said to them, A wicked and adulterous generation is seeking for a sign; and no sign will be given to it, but the sign of Jonah the prophet.

Then come the disciples, and say to him, Dost thou know that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard that saying?

Hath any one of the rulers believed in him? or of the Pharisees?


I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, hut brought up in this city, taught at the feet of Gamaliel in the strictness of the Law of our fathers, being zealous for God, as ye all are this day.

And there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

But there rose up certain believers of the sect of the Pharisees, saying, It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.


Then come to Jesus Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said to them, Why do ye too transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

And there come together to him the Pharisees, and some of the scribes, who came from Jerusalem; and seeing some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is, unwashed hands, (for the Pharisees, and all the Jews, unless they wash their hands often, do not eat, holding fast the tradition of the elders; read more.
and on coming from the marketplace, unless they bathe, they do not eat; and there are many other things which they have received to hold, the dipping of cups, and pitchers, and brazen vessels;) then the Pharisees and scribes ask him, Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with defiled hands? And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, "This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." Laying aside, the commandment of God, ye hold fast the tradition of men. And he said to them, Full well do ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your tradition! For Moses said, "Honor thy father and thy mother;" and, "He that curseth father or mother, let him surely die." But ye say, If a man say to his father or mother, Whatever thou mightst receive in aid from me is Corban, that is, a gift to God, [he is not bound by the command. Thus] ye suffer him no longer to do anything for his father or his mother; making void the word of God by your tradition, which ye have handed down; and many such things ye do. And again calling the multitude to him, he said to them, Hearken to me all of you, and understand. Nothing that entereth into a man from without can defile him; but the things that come out of him are what defile a man.


And it came to pass, when he had come into the house of one of the chief men of the Pharisees on the sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching him.

And one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him; and he went into the Pharisees house, and reclined at the table.

And when he had done speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him. And he went in and reclined at the table.


Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast, and thy disciples fast not?

I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I gain.


And the Pharisees came to him, trying him, and saying, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

Then the Pharisees went and consulted together how l they might ensnare him in speech. And they send out to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and thou carest for no one; for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us, therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? read more.
But Jesus, perceiving their wickedness, said, Why are ye trying me, hypocrites? Show me the tribute money. And they brought to him a denary. And Jesus saith to them, Whose is this image and inscription? They say, Caesars. Then saith he to them, Render then to Caesar the things that are Caesars, and to God the things that are Gods. And hearing this, they wondered, and left him, and went away.


But Paul, perceiving one part to be Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, cried aloud in the council, Brethren! I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees; for the hope of the resurrection of the dead I am now tried.

and they know, if they are willing to testify, that from the first, according to the strictest sect of our religion, I lived a Pharisee.


And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, Why doth your teacher eat with the publicans and sinners? But when he heard that, he said, They who are well do not need a physician, but they who are sick. But go ye and learn what this meaneth: "I desire mercy, and not sacrifice." For I came not to call righteous men, but sinners.


For God commanded, saying, "Honor thy father and thy mother;" and, "He that curseth father or mother, let him surely die." But ye say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, Whatever thou mightst receive in aid from me is a gift [to God], he shall not honor his father or his mother. Thus have ye made void the law of God for the sake of your tradition. read more.
Hypocrites! well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you, saying, "This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men."


But the Pharisees, seeing it, said to him, Lo! thy disciples are doing that which it is not lawful to do on the sabbath. But he said to them, Have ye not read what David did, when he and those who were with him were hungry? how he went into the house of God, and they ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but for the priests alone? read more.
Or have ye not read in the Law, that on the sabbaths the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? But I say to you, that something greater than the temple is here. But if ye had known what this meaneth, "I desire mercy and not sacrifice," ye would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.


But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to be baptized, he said to them, Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance, and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. read more.
And already is the axe lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that beareth not good fruit is to be cut down, and cast into the fire.

For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and no angel or spirit; but the Pharisees affirm both.


But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God toward themselves, not being baptized by him.


But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men."

and made progress in Judaism beyond many of the same age with me in my nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

then the Pharisees and scribes ask him, Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with defiled hands? And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, "This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." read more.
Laying aside, the commandment of God, ye hold fast the tradition of men.


And the Pharisee who had invited him, when he saw this, said within himself, This man, if he were a prophet, would know who, and what sort of woman, this is that toucheth him; for she is a sinner.

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, Why doth your teacher eat with the publicans and sinners?

And all the publicans and the sinners were drawing near to him, to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.


And Jesus said to them, Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

How is it that ye do not understand, that I spoke not to you of loaves? But [I said] Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Then they understood, that he did not bid them beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.


But there stood up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, in high esteem with all the people, and commanded to put the men forth a little while,

And there arose a great clamor; and scribes of the party of the Pharisees arose, and contended, saying, We find nothing amiss in this man; but if a spirit hath spoken to him or an angel

And there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.


The Pharisee stood and prayed by himself thus: O God, I thank thee that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

circumcised the eighth day, of the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, persecuting the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, blameless.


Blind guides! who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.

Fools and blind I for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?


And the Pharisees and Sadducees came to try him, and asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Teacher, we wish to see a sign from thee.


But the Pharisees said, He casteth out the demons through the prince of the demons.

But the Pharisees, hearing it, said, This man doth not cast out the demons, except through Beelzebul, the prince of the demons.


circumcised the eighth day, of the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee;

But there rose up certain believers of the sect of the Pharisees, saying, It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.


And the Pharisees, who were covetous, heard all this, and they derided him.

And they said to him, The disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink.

I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I gain.


And to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised all others, he spoke this parable:

And he said to them, Ye are they who justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts; for that which is highly exalted among men is an abomination before God.


And one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him; and he went into the Pharisees house, and reclined at the table.

And when he had done speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him. And he went in and reclined at the table.


The Pharisees heard the multitude thus debating concerning him; and the chief priest and the Pharisees sent officers to seize him.

The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, Why did ye not bring him?


And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, Who art thou?

And they were sent from the Pharisees;


I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, hut brought up in this city, taught at the feet of Gamaliel in the strictness of the Law of our fathers, being zealous for God, as ye all are this day.

And they said to him, The disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink.


But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites I because ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for ye go not in yourselves, nor suffer those who are entering to go in. (...) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is made, ye make him twofold mole a son of hell than yourselves. read more.
Woe to you, blind guides, that say, Whoever sweareth by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever sweareth by the gold of the temple, is bound. Fools and blind I for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And, Whoever sweareth by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, is bound. Blind men! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar flint sanctifieth the gift? He then who sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all that is upon it; and he that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him who dwelleth in it; and he who sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth thereon. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithes of the mint, and the dill, and the cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the Law, justice, and mercy, and faith; these ought ye to have done, and not to leave those undone. Blind guides! who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and the platter, but within they are full of robbery and licentiousness. Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup, that its outside side also may become clean. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like whited sepulchres, which outwardly indeed appear beautiful, but within are full of dead mens bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous, and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. So that ye bear witness against yourselves, that ye are the sons of those who killed the prophets. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers! Serpents, brood of vipers! how can ye escape the punishment of hell?


and salutations in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your teacher; and ye are all brethren. And call no one your father on the earth; for one is your father, he who is in heaven. read more.
Nor be ye called leaders; for one is your leader, the Christ.

and love the first place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,


They bind heavy burdens, and lay them on mens shoulders, and will not themselves move them with a finger.


For I say to you, Unless your righteousness shall exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye will not enter the kingdom of heaven.


And all their works they do to be observed by men. They make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge their fringes,


But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to be baptized, he said to them, Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?


But Saul, yet breathing out threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, and asked of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any who were of this way of belief, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.


When therefore Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples,) he left Judaea, and went again to Galilee.

For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and no angel or spirit; but the Pharisees affirm both.

Then come to Jesus Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, saying,


No one when he has lighted a lamp, puts it into a secret place, or under the bushel, but on the lampstand, that they who come in may see the light. The lamp of the body is thine eye. When thine eye is clear, thy whole body also is in the light; but when it is disordered, thy body also is in darkness. Take heed therefore, that the light which is within thee be not darkness. read more.
If then thy whole body is enlightened, having no part dark, the whole will be as fully enlightened, as when a lamp with its bright shining giveth thee light. And when he had done speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him. And he went in and reclined at the table. And the Pharisee, seeing it, wondered that he did not bathe before dinner. But the Lord said to him, Now ye Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inside is full of rapacity and wickedness. But woe to you Pharisees! for ye pay tithes of the mint, and the rue, and every herb; and pass by justice and the love of God. These ought ye to have done, and not to leave those undone. Woe to you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the markets. Woe to you, for ye are as tombs which are unseen, and men walking over them know it not. And one of the lawyers answering saith to him, Teacher, in saying these things, thou revilest us also. And he said, To you lawyers also, woe! for ye load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe to you! for ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. So then ye bear witness to and approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and ye are building [their tombs]. Therefore the wisdom of God also said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute; that the blood of all the prophets, which hath been shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was slain between the altar and the temple. Yea, I tell you, it will be required of this generation. Woe to you lawyers! because ye have taken away the key of knowledge; ye have not entered yourselves, and those who were entering ye have hindered. And as he came out thence, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very spiteful, and to press him to speak off hand about many things, lying in wait to catch something out of his mouth.

They answered him, We are Abrahams offspring, and have never been in bondage to any one; how sayest, thou, Ye will be made free? Jesus answered them, Truly, truly do I say to you, Every one that committeth sin is a bondservant of sin. And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever; the son abideth for ever. read more.
If therefore the Son make you free, ye will be free indeed. I know that ye are Abrahams offspring; but ye seek to kill me, because my word is not received within you. I speak what I have seen with the Father; and ye accordingly do what ye have seen with your father. They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them, If ye were Abrahams children, ye would do the works of Abraham. But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath spoken to you the truth, which I heard from God; this did not Abraham. Ye do the works of your father. They said to him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, God. Jesus said to them, If God were your father, ye would love me; for from God I proceeded forth and am come; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my language? It is because ye cannot listen to my word. Ye are of your father the Devil, and what your father desireth ye are ready to do. He was a murderer from the beginning; and he abideth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh from his own nature; for he is a liar, and the father of it. But because I speak the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I speak truth, Why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth Gods words; for this cause ye do not hear, because ye are not of God. The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon? Jesus answered, I have not a demon, but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me. But I seek not my own glory; there is one that seeketh and judgeth. Truly, truly do I say to you, If any one keep my word, he will never see death. The Jews said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he will never taste of death. Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets also died. Whom dost thou make thyself? Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom ye say, He is our God: yet ye know him not; but I know him. And if I should say, I know him not, I should be a liar like you. But I know him, and keep his word. Your father Abraham exulted that he might see my day; and he saw it, and was glad. The Jews therefore said to him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said to them, Truly, truly do I say to you, From before Abraham was, I have been. They therefore took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus concealed himself, and went out of the temple.

They reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God hath spoken to Moses; but as for this man, we know not whence he is. The man answered and said to them, Why, herein is a marvelous thing, that ye know not whence he is, and yet he opened my eyes. read more.
We know that God heareth not sinners; but if any one is a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. Since the world began, it was never heard that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing. They answered and said to him, Thou wast wholly born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
