and said, 'Hail! the king of the Jews;' and they were giving him slaps.
Jesus answered, 'Thou wouldest have no authority against me, if it were not having been given thee from above; because of this, he who is delivering me up to thee hath greater sin.'
From this time was Pilate seeking to release him, and the Jews were crying out, saying, 'If this one thou mayest release, thou art not a friend of Caesar; every one making himself a king, doth speak against Caesar.'
and it was the preparation of the passover, and as it were the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews, 'Lo, your king!'
These words were read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and they were written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek.
The High-priests of the Jews, therefore, were saying unto Pilate - Do not be writing, The King of the Jews; but that, he, said: King of the Jews, I am.
Standing
after this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be be fulfilled, said, I thirst.
So the men of the army came, and the legs of the first were broken and then of the other who was put to death on the cross with Jesus:
But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead by this time, and so his legs were not broken;
for these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, "a bone of him shall not be broken."
and Nicodemus also came -- who came unto Jesus by night at the first -- bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, as it were, a hundred pounds.
And there was near the spot were he was crucified a garden and in the garden a new tomb, wherein no person had ever yet been laid.
Peter, therefore, went forth, and the other disciple, and they were coming to the tomb,
and the two were running together, and the other disciple did run forward more quickly than Peter, and came first to the tomb,
He stooped down and looked inside [the cave-like tomb] and saw the linen cloths lying there [i.e., these were wrappings used to hold embalming spices against the body], but he did not go in.
At this point Simon Peter arrived, following him, and went straight into the tomb. He observed that the linen cloths were lying there,
She saw two angels in white clothes who were sitting down, one at the head and the other at the foot of the place where Jesus' body had been lying.
It being, therefore, evening, on that day, the first of the sabbaths, and the doors having been shut where the disciples were assembled, through fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith to them, 'Peace to you;'
and when he had so said, he show'd them his hands and his side. the disciples were therefore extremely glad when they saw it was the Lord.
The other disciples, therefore, were saying unto him - We have seen the Lord! But, he, said unto them - Except I see, in his hands, the print of the nails, and press my finger into the print of the nails, and press my hand into his side, in nowise will I believe.
And after eight days, again were his disciples within, and Thomas with them; Jesus cometh, the doors having been shut, and he stood in the midst, and said, 'Peace to you!'
There were many other signs that Jesus showed before his disciples which are not recorded in this book.
After this, Jesus again showed Himself to the disciples. It was at the Lake of Tiberias. The circumstances were as follows.
Simon Peter,
Now very early in the morning Jesus was there by the edge of the sea (though the disciples were not conscious that it was Jesus).
But since they were not far from land (about 100 yards
assoon as they were come to land, they saw fish frying upon a fire of coals there, and bread.
So Simon Peter got up and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish—153 of them. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.
Jesus said to them, Come and take some food. And all the disciples were in fear of putting the question, Who are you? being conscious that it was the Lord.
When they were through breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these others do?" "Yes, Lord, you know that you are dear to me." he answered. Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs."
And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if they were written one by one, I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books
after he had given the apostles he had chosen, the orders they were to execute by the holy spirit.
being with them when they were assembled, he order'd they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for what the father had promis'd, which, said he, I mention'd.
They, therefore, indeed, having come together, were questioning him, saying, 'Lord, dost thou at this time restore the reign to Israel?'
After He had said this, He was taken up as they were watching, and a cloud took Him out of their sight.
While He was going, they were gazing into heaven, and suddenly two men in white clothes stood by them.
When they arrived, they went to the room
James, Andrew,
Philip, Thomas,
Bartholomew, Matthew,
James the son of Alphaeus,
Simon the Zealot,
and Judas the son of James.
All these were continually united
During these days Peter stood up among the brothers
Truly this therefore purchased a place from the wages of iniquity; and being bent forward, he brake in pieces in the midst, and all his entrails were poured out.
And this came to the knowledge of all those who were living in Jerusalem, so that the field was named in their language, Akel-dama, or, The field of blood.)
So two names were proposed, Joseph called Bar-sabbas--and surnamed Justus--and Matthias.
When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind
And tongues, like flames of fire that were divided, appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
Then they were all filled
There were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation
and the rumour of this having come, the multitude came together, and was confounded, because they were each one hearing them speaking in his proper dialect,
And they were astounded and amazed, saying,
and how do we hear, each in our proper dialect, in which we were born?
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya toward Cyrene, and the Romans who were in town,
They were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, “What could this be?”
But others in derision were saying, "They are running over with new wine."
When they heard this, they came under deep conviction
So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about 3,000 people were added to them.
and they were continuing stedfastly in the teaching of the apostles, and the fellowship, and the breaking of the bread, and the prayers.
Then fear came over everyone, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles.
Now all the believers were together and held all things in common.
and the possessions and the goods they were selling, and were parting them to all, according as any one had need.
Daily also continuing with one accord in the temple, breaking also at every house bread, they were partaking of food in gladness and simplicity of heart,
praising God and having favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to them
Now Peter and John were going up together to the temple complex at the hour of prayer
and a certain man, being lame from the womb of his mother, was being carried, whom they were laying every day at the gate of the temple, called Beautiful, to ask a kindness from those entering into the temple,
When he saw that Peter and John were about to go into the Temple, he asked them to give him something.
He looked at them, supposing that they were going to give him something.
And having seized him by the right hand, he raised him up, and presently his feet and ankles were strengthened,
and they recognized that he was the one who used to sit and beg at the Beautiful Gate of the temple complex. So they were filled with awe and astonishment at what had happened to him.
As the lame man who was cured, held Peter and John, the people all in surprize ran to Solomon's porch, where they were.
When Peter saw this, he said to the people. "Men of Israel, why are you so surprised at this? Why do you stare so at us, as though it were some power or some piety of ours that had made him able to walk?
[Then, at the hands of the Roman authorities] you killed the Prince of [never ending] life, but God raised Him from the dead, and we [apostles] were [reliable] witnesses of it.
"And yet, I know, brothers, that you did not realize what you were doing, any more than your leaders did.
But this way God fulfilled what things were foretold, through the mouth of all his prophets, the Christ was to endure.
You [Jews] were the first ones to receive this blessing when God raised up [i.e., selected] His Servant [i.e., Jesus] and sent Him to turn all of you [away] from your sins."
Now as they were speaking to the people, the priests, the commander of the temple police, and the Sadducees confronted them,
because they were provoked that they were teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection from the dead, using Jesus as the example.
and many of those hearing the word did believe, and the number of the men became, as it were, five thousand.
And it came to pass upon the morrow, there were gathered together of them the rulers, and elders, and scribes, to Jerusalem,
And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.
and having set them in the midst, they were inquiring, 'In what power, or in what name did ye do this?'
When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus.
And, seeing that the man who had been made well was there with them, they were not able to say anything against it.
But, having ordered them to go aside out of the Sanhedrin, they were conferring one with another,
After threatening them further, they released them. They found no way to punish them, because the people were all giving glory to God over what had been done;
After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
Having said by the mouth of David thy servant, That why were the nations insolent, and did the people practise vain things
The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak God’s message with boldness.
Now the large group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but instead they held everything in common.
And the apostles were giving testimony with great power to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on all of them.
For there was not a needy person among them, because all those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds of the things that were sold,
and were laying them at the feet of the apostles, and distribution was being made to each according as any one had need.
And at these words, Ananias went down on the earth, and his life went from him: and great fear came on all who were present.
And it fortuned as it were about the space of three hours after, that his wife came in, ignorant of that which was done.
And Peter said to her, "Tell me whether you [both] were paid this much [for] the piece of land." And she said, "Yes, this much."
And the whole church and all who heard this were appalled.
Many signs and wonders were being done among the people through the hands of the apostles.
