Throughout the whole Praetorian guard and among all the others it has become plain that these chains of mine are for the sake of Christ;
These, indeed, out of love, knowing that, for the defence of the glad-message, I am set;
These latter out of their love, because they know that I am set here for the defense of the gospel;
For I know that these things will turn out to my salvation through your prayers and a rich supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
so that you may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation. Among these you shine as lights in the world,
Finally, my brothers, rejoice in [your relationship to] the Lord. It does not trouble me to write the same things to you again, because you will be safer if I do. [Note: These "same things" may refer to warnings against false teachers which Paul had either spoken to them or written about previously].
Beware of "these dogs," these mischievous workers, beware of the concision!
though I too might rely on these. If anyone thinks that he can rely on outward privileges, far more might I do so:
But whatever was gain to me, these things I regarded loss because of the Christ.
nay I think them disadvantages when put in competition with the excellency of the knowledge of Jesus Christ my Lord: for whose sake I abandon all these things, and count them as straw, that I may gain Christ,
All of us who are mature [pursuing spiritual perfection] should have this attitude. And if in any respect you have a different attitude, that too God will make clear to you.
Destruction is their fate, the belly is their god, they glory in their shame, these men of earthly mind!
who will transform these humble bodies of ours into the likeness of his glorious body by means of that power by which he is able to subject all things to himself.

Finally,

[You have these qualities] because of the hope stored up for you in heaven, which [hope] you previously heard about through the message of truth when the Gospel
So, this is why, since the day we heard about these things, we do not stop praying for you and requesting that you people be filled [by God] with the knowledge of what He wants [for your lives], and with spiritual wisdom and understanding.
He was pleased to make known to these people the wealth of His splendor among the Gentiles; this hidden secret, which is Christ among you, [is] the hope of being honored [i.e., in heaven].
that their hearts may be comforted, being knit together in love, and to all the riches of a full assurance of understanding in these things, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of our God and Father, and of Christ:
He cancelled the regulations that stood against us ??all these obligations he set aside when he nailed them to the cross,
These were a shadow of things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
"Hands off this!" "Taste not that!" "Touch not this!" ??22 referring to things that perish by being used? These rules are determined by human precepts and tenets;
All these regulations refer to what is destroyed by being used up; they are commands and doctrines of men.
For these precepts, although they have a show of wisdom with their self-imposed devotions and fastings and bodily austerities, are of no real value against the indulgence of the carnal appetites.
Because of these [sinful] things the [divine] wrath of God is coming
Wherein, ye also, walked, at one time, when ye were living in these things;
But now rid yourselves [completely] of all these things: anger, rage, malice, slander, and obscene (abusive, filthy, vulgar) language from your mouth.
[In this state] there cannot be [such distinctions as] Greek [i.e., Gentile] and Jew; circumcised people and non-circumcised people; barbarian and Scythian [Note: These last two words refer to foreigners whose language was unintelligible and who were uncivilized heathens], or slave and free person; but Christ is all [that is important] and [He is] in all [of His people].
Beyond all these things put on and wrap yourselves in [unselfish] love, which is the perfect bond of unity [for everything is bound together in agreement when each one seeks the best for others].
Aristarchus my fellow-prisoner salutes you, and Mark the nephew of Barnabas,??oncerning whom you received commandments, if he comes to you receive him,??11 and Jesus called Justus, who are of the circumcision; these are the only co-laborers for the kingdom of God who have been a comfort to me.
and from Jesus, who is called Justus. These are the only fellow workers for the kingdom of God who are from the circumcision (Jewish Christians), and they have proved to be an encouragement and a comfort to me.
For I testify about Epaphras, that he has worked hard for you, and [also] for those people in Laodicia and Hierapolis. [Note: These are towns close to Colosse].
I, Paul, add this farewell in my own handwriting. Do not forget these chains of mine. Grace be with you.
and so became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. [Note: These two provinces make up present-day Greece].
For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also have suffered these things by your own countrymen, even as they also by the Jews;
so that no one would be unsettled by these difficulties [to which I have referred]. For you know that we have been destined for this [as something unavoidable in our position].
And last of all, the prayer which we make to you from our heart and in the name of the Lord Jesus, is this: that as we made clear to you what sort of behaviour is pleasing to God, as in fact you are doing now, so you will go on in these ways, but more and more.
not to gratify sensual passion like the Gentiles in their ignorance of God ??6 no one is to defraud or overreach his brother in this matter, for the Lord avenges all these sins, as we told you already in our solemn protest against them.
not to transgress and to cheat his brother in the affair, because the Lord is vengeful about all these things, as also we forewarned you and solemnly testified.
he therefore that violates these precepts, does not despise man, but God, who has endued me with his holy spirit.
[Do these things] so that you will live in a proper way in front of outsiders [i.e., non-Christians], and not have [to depend on people for] any needs.
Therefore encourage each other with these words.
But we urge you, brothers, to know [i.e., appreciate and respect] those who work hard among you, and who lead you and warn you in [the fellowship of] the Lord. [Note: These men were probably the elders. See Acts 20:28; Heb. 13:17].
For these are a plain token of God's righteous judgement, which has in view your being deemed worthy of admission to God's Kingdom, for the sake of which, indeed, you are sufferers.
indeed, it is right for God to repay with crushing sorrows those who cause you these crushing sorrows,
These will receive the punishment of eternal destruction as exiles from the presence of the Lord and His glorious might,
Do ye not remember that when I was yet with you I told you these things?
Now, such as these, we charge and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ, - that, with quietness, working, their own bread, they be eating.
and if any one refuses to obey these our written instructions, mark that man and hold no communication with him--so that he may be made to feel ashamed.
These words of love to you at the end are in my writing, Paul's writing, and this is the mark of every letter from me.
or to pay attention to myths
Some people have stepped aside from these things and turned to fruitless talking.
This charge then, I am laying upon you, Timothy, my son, according to the predictions formerly made concerning you. Fight the good fight in the spirit of these predictions,
Keeping faith, and being conscious of well-doing; for some, by not doing these things, have gone wrong in relation to the faith:
Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have turned over to Satan to be so disciplined that they will stop their abusive speech.
And let these also first be proven, then being blameless, let them serve as deacons.
These things I write to thee, hoping to come to thee sooner,
speaking lies in hypocrisy. These are men whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron,
and they discourage marriage and enjoin abstinence from certain kinds of food; though God created these foods to be enjoyed thankfully by those who hold the Faith and have attained a full knowledge of the Truth.
If you continue to put these things before the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, ever feeding your own soul on the truths of the faith and of the fine teaching which you have followed.
Ever reject these profane and old womanish myths; and continually train yourself for the contest of godliness.
Continue to give these orders and to teach these truths.
Continue cultivating these things; be devoted to them, so that everybody will see your progress.
Make it your habit to pay close attention to yourself and your teaching. Persevere in these things, for if you do you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.
Honour widows that are widows indeed. But if any widow have children or grand children, let these learn first to shew piety at home,
But if any widow has children or children's children, let these see that it is right to take care of their family and their fathers and mothers: for this is pleasing in the eyes of God.
Continue to give these directions so that the people may be without reproach.
If anyone fails to provide for his own, and especially for those of his own family, he has denied the faith [by disregarding its precepts] and is worse than an unbeliever [who fulfills his obligation in these matters].
I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the chosen angels, to carry out these instructions without prejudice and with perfect impartiality.
Likewise also the good works of some are manifest; and having these otherwise, it cannot be hid.
Those who have Christian masters must not pay them less respect because they are brothers; they must serve them all the better, because those who get the benefit of their service are believers and so are dear to them. These are the things that you must continue to teach and urge them to do.
These things teach and exhort. If any one teach otherwise, and adhere not to the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the doctrine which is according to godliness;
he is puffed up with conceit and knows nothing, but is doting about disputations and a strife of words. These give rise to envy, quarrels, railings, evil suspicions,
and incessant wrangling on the part of these corrupt-minded people who have lost all hold on the Truth, and who think of religion only as a source of gain.
but having food and covering we will be content with these.
But you, as a man of God, must be fleeing always from these things; you must constantly strive for uprightness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.
to observe these precepts, to lead an unspotted life without reproof until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ,
The reason I am reminding you [of these things] is so that you will rekindle the gift from God, which is in your life through the laying on my hands. [Note: This "gift" was probably his ordination to serve as an evangelist (See 4:1-5), and in addition, may have included a supernatural "spiritual gift" bestowed by the apostle Paul].
Of the gospel I was appointed a herald, apostle, and teacher; and that is the reason I am now undergoing these sufferings.
Because of which reason I also suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to preserve my consignment for that day.
And what thou have heard from me through many witnesses, these things commit thou to faithful men who will be competent to teach others also.
Think over the things I am saying [grasp their application], for the Lord will grant you insight and understanding in everything.
Keep on reminding men of these things. Solemnly charge them before God to stop petty debating, which does no good at all but brings destruction on those who hear it.
and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among these people are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
But God's foundation stands unshaken, with these inscriptions: "The Lord knows the people who belong to Him" and "Everyone who bears the name of the Lord must abstain from evil."
So if a man will cleanse himself from these things, he will be an instrument for honorable uses, consecrated, useful for the Master, and ready for any good service.
But avoid foolish discussions with ignorant men, knowing--as you do--that these lead to quarrels;
having a form of piety, but repudiating the power of it. Now turn away from these men,
for from these are those who creep into houses, and take captive petty women laden with sins, being led away by various impulses,
always learning and listening to anybody who will teach them, but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Just as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, these people resist the truth, for they are depraved in mind and so counterfeits in the faith.
However, they will get no further, for their aberration will be detected by everyone, as was the case with these magicians.
But you have followed [Note: These words mean "to observe closely, have a keen interest in"] my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance,
as well as the persecutions and sufferings that happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra. I endured these persecutions and the Lord delivered me from them all.
as for these impious impostors, they will go on from bad to worse, seducing others, and deluding themselves.
But you should continue [to believe and practice] what you have learned and been convinced of, knowing those from whom you learned it. [Note: These persons would include Lois and Eunice (See 1:5), as well as Paul himself].
namely, a man of unquestionable integrity, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of being immoral or rebellious.
