I am aware of nothing against myself and I feel blameless, but I am not by this acquitted [before God]. It is the Lord who judges me.
Now I have applied these things, brothers, to myself and to Apollos as an illustration for your benefit, so that you might learn to "follow the written message." [Note: This is thought to have been a common way of referring, in that day, to the importance of adhering to Old Testament Scripture]. So, none of you should be more proud of one [leader] than of another.
Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.
We meet slander with gentle appeals. We have been treated as the scum of the earth, the vilest of the vile, to this very hour.
I'm not writing this to make you feel ashamed, but to warn you as my dear children.
Wherefore I desire you to follow me.
This is my reason for sending Timothy to you. He is my own dear faithful child in the Master's service, and he will remind you of my methods of teaching the Faith of Christ Jesus-methods which I follow everywhere in every Church.
Now some are full of pride, as if I was not coming to you.
But I will come to you in a short time, if it is pleasing to the Lord, and I will take note, not of the word of those who are full of pride, but of the power.
But actually, I have written to you not to associate with any so-called [Christian] brother if he is sexually immoral or greedy, or is an idolater [devoted to anything that takes the place of God], or is a reviler [who insults or slanders or otherwise verbally abuses others], or is a drunkard or a swindler—you must not so much as
I say this to make you feel ashamed. Has it come to this, that there is not one person among you who is wise enough to settle disagreements between brothers?
or thieves, or avaricious men, or drunkards, or foul-mouthed men, or extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
But I say this, brothers; there is not much time left [i.e., before the crisis arrives in full fury. See verse 26]. From now on those men who are married should live as though they were single.
and those that use the world, as not using it to the full: for the fashion of this world passeth away.
if any man thinks it would be a reflexion upon his manhood to be a stale batchelor, and so ought to marry; let him follow his bent, he is at liberty, let such marry.
But [another] man, who has a conviction in his heart [about the matter], and does not feel it is necessary [to get married], but has control over his will [i.e., his sexual passion], and has made up his mind to keep [from marrying] his own virgin [fiancee] --- that man is doing the right thing [also].
A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but, if her husband fall asleep, she is at liberty to he married to whom she will: only in the Lord.
Now about food sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge [concerning this]. Knowledge [alone] makes [people self-righteously] arrogant, but love [that unselfishly seeks the best for others] builds up and encourages others to grow [in wisdom].
However, not every person knows this [truth]. For some people have been so used to an idol all this time that they still think of the idol [as a reality] when eating food that has been sacrificed to it. And their weak conscience becomes polluted. [Note: These people cannot seem to shake off the idea that somehow the idol is real, so feel guilty of wrongdoing when eating food sacrificed to it].
But pay attention [to this], so that somehow this liberty of yours [i.e., to eat whatever you want to] does not become an occasion over which weak people could fall [away from God].
And on your knowledge the weak brother will fall, he for whom Christ died.
Wherefore if meat be a fall-trap to my brother, I will eat no flesh for ever, that I may not be a fall-trap to my brother.
But I, for my part, have not used, and do not use, my full rights in any of these things. Nor do I now write with that object so far as I myself am concerned, for I would rather die than have anybody make this boast of mine an empty one.
For if I [merely] preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast about, for I am compelled [that is, absolutely obligated to do it]. Woe to me if I do not preach the good news [of salvation]!
What then is my reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel without charge, so as not to use to the full my right in the gospel.
And I do all things for the sake of the glad tidings, that I may be fellow-partaker with them.
Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
No temptation has come upon you that is not common to all mankind. God will not fail you, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength; but, when he sends the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, so that you may have strength to endure.
Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
Let no one be for ever seeking his own good, but let each seek that of his fellow man.
Eat whatever is sold in the [public] meat markets, without asking any questions [about it] for [your] conscience' sake [i.e., do not inquire about the previous use of the food you buy, because you might discover something about it that would make you feel guilty of wrongdoing if you ate it].
Do not [do what could] cause Jews, Greeks [i.e., Gentiles] or the church of God to fall [away from God].
Imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.
A man who wears a veil when praying or prophesying dishonors his Head;
while any woman who prays or prophesies without a veil on her head dishonours her head; she is no better than a shaven woman.
If a woman will not wear a veil, let her also cut off her hair. But since it is a dishonor to a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her wear a veil.
For a man ought not to have a veil on his head, since he is the image and glory of God; while woman is the glory of man.
For this reason ought the woman to have a power [veil] on her head because of the angels.
Be you yourselves judges: is it decent for a woman to pray to God without a veil?
But woman, if she have long hair, it is glory to her; for the long hair is given to her in lieu of a veil.
for first, I hear, that when you come together in the church, you fall into parties; and I believe it is true of some of you.
Why, have you no homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you wish to show your contempt for the Church of God and make those who have no homes feel ashamed? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this matter I certainly do not praise you.
But when we [fall short and] are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined [by undergoing His correction] so that we will not be condemned [to eternal punishment] along with the world.
For through the baptism of the one Spirit we were all formed into one body, Jews or Greeks, servants or free men, and were all made full of the same Spirit.
She knows how to be silent. She is full of trust, full of hope, full of patient endurance.
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
but when that which is complete comes [i.e., the full revelation of God's will, contained in the New Testament Scriptures], then the partial will be abolished [i.e., the supernatural gifts, which provided only part of the revealed will of God, will cease to be exercised].
For now [i.e., during the church's infant state] we see in a mirror [Note: God's word is elsewhere likened to a mirror. See James 1:22-25] indistinctly [i.e., because of having only partial knowledge and prophecy], but then [i.e., when the church matures and has the completed Scriptures], we will see face to face [i.e., clearly]. Now I have [only] partial knowledge, but then I will have full knowledge, just as [God has] full knowledge of me.
Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
But he who preaches is speaking to his fellow men words that will build up faith, and give them comfort and encouragement.
And so with you; if with the living voice you fail to utter intelligible words, how will people know what you are saying? You will be talking to the winds.
My brothers, do not be children in mind: in evil be as little children, but in mind be of full growth.
the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.
for God is a God not of disorder but of harmony. [Move 33b-36 to follow vs 40] As is the rule in all churches of the saints,
afterwards he appeared to above five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain till now, and certain also did fall asleep;
Then also those that fell asleep in Christ were lost.
Daily I face death-I swear it, Brothers, by the pride in you that I feel through my union with Christ Jesus, our Lord.
Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:
Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed,
Now concerning the collection for the saints, you should follow the directions I gave to the churches in Galatia.
When Timotheus arrives, see that you make him feel quite at home with you; he carries on the work of the Lord as I do.
let all your transactions flow from social affections.
I beg you this, my brothers??ou know the household of Stephanus, that they were the first-fruits of Achaia, and that they devoted themselves to the service of the saints??16 so I want you also to show deference to such, and to every fellow worker, and laborer.
I want you, on your part, to show deference to such men as these, as well as to every fellow laborer and earnest worker.
and I rejoice over the presence of Stephanas, and Fortunatus, and Achaicus, because the lack of you did these fill up;
The churches in Asia send you their greetings [Note: This was the westernmost province in present-day Turkey]. Aquila and Prisca [Note: This married couple were close friends and fellow-tentmakers of Paul], along with the church that meets in their house, send you their warm greetings in [fellowship with] Christ.
Heartfelt thanks be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ--the Father who is full of compassion and the God who gives all comfort.
For just as Christ’s sufferings are ours in abundance [as they overflow to His followers], so also our comfort [our reassurance, our encouragement, our consolation] is abundant through Christ [it is truly more than enough to endure what we must].
You don't have to read between the lines of my letters; you can understand them. Yes, I trust you will understand the full meaning of my letters
Not that we rule over your faith, but are fellow-workmen of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
how will the ministry of the Spirit fail to be even more with glory?
Such being my hope then, I am quite frank and open ??13 not like Moses, who used to hang a veil over his face to keep the children of Israel from gazing at the last rays of a fading glory.
And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.
But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
And all of us, with faces from which the veil is lifted, seeing, as if reflected in a mirror, the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into his likeness, from glory to glory, as it is given by the Lord, the Spirit.
Nay, we have renounced the secrecy which marks a feeling of shame. We practice no cunning tricks, nor do we adulterate God's Message. But by a full clear statement of the truth we strive to commend ourselves in the presence of God to every human conscience.
But even if our gospel is [in some sense] hidden [behind a veil], it is hidden [only] to those who are perishing;
Thus we are constantly dying, while you are in full enjoyment of Life.
So then, being always filled with good courage and confident hope, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord—
Thus we are full of courage and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
But as fellow-workmen, we also beseech that ye receive not the grace of God in vain:
We endeavour to give people no cause for stumbling in anything, lest the work we are doing should fall into discredit.
On the contrary, as God's servants, we seek their full approval--by unwearied endurance, by afflictions, by distress, by helplessness;
As full of sorrow, but ever glad; as poor, but giving wealth to others; as having nothing, but still having all things.
O Corinthians, my heart is so full, my tongue cannot be silent:
Seeing that we have such promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, and grow up to full holiness in the fear of God.
My words to you are without fear, I am full of pride on account of you: I have great comfort and joy in all our troubles.
Yet God, who comforts those who feel miserable, comforted us by the arrival of Titus,
yet I am glad now, not because you were hurt and made sorry, but because your sorrow led to repentance [and you turned back to God]; for you felt a grief such as God meant you to feel, so that you might not suffer loss in anything on our account.
See what great earnestness godly sorrow has produced in you! How ready you are to clear yourselves, how indignant, how alarmed, how full of longing and enthusiasm, how eager to seek justice! In every way you have demonstrated that you are innocent in this matter.
For this reason we feel comforted; and--in addition to this our comfort--we have been filled with all the deeper joy at Titus's joy, because his spirit has been set at rest by you all.
For however I may have boasted to him about you, I have no reason to feel ashamed; but as we have in all respects spoken the truth to you, so also our boasting to Titus about you has turned out to be the truth.
I am glad that I can feel perfect confidence in you.
For I testify that they gave [financial help] to the full limit of their ability, yes and even beyond it. [And they did this] entirely on their own,
And with many an appeal to us for permission, they showed their love, and contributed their share towards the fund for their fellow-Christians.
And that as you are full of every good thing, of faith, of the word, of knowledge, of a ready mind, and of love to us, so you may be full of this grace in the same way.
