Salute Philologus and Julius, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who were with them.
I beg you, brothers, to be on the watch for those who introduce divisions and difficulties, in opposition to the instruction that you were given, and to avoid them.
that by Him you were enriched
all of which verifies the testimony we bore to Christ when we were with you.
God is faithful;
Is there a division in Christ? was Paul nailed to the cross for you? or were you given baptism in the name of Paul?
Or were ye baptized into the name of Paul? I thank God, that I baptized none of you but Crispus and Caius:
lest any man should say that ye were baptized into my name.
For be looking at the calling of you, brethren, - that there were not many wise, according to flesh. Not many powerful, not many high-born:
those who were looked upon by the world as vile, as despicable, as nothing, these has God chosen to reduce their sufficiency to nothing.
And in my preaching there were no honeyed words of wisdom, but I was dependent on the power of the Spirit to make it clear to you:
but we speak the wisdom of God, which had been hid in mystery, which God predestined before the worlds were, for our glory:
But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is from God; that we might know the things that were freely given to us of God.
And I could not speak unto you brethren as unto spiritual: but as unto carnal, even as it were unto babes in Christ.
I gave you milk and not meat, because you were, then, unable to take it, and even now you are not able;
What, I ask, is Apollos? or what is Paul? Servants through whom you were led to accept the Faith; and that only as the Lord helped each of you.
If any man's work burn; he shall suffer loss. But he shall be safe himself, nevertheless yet as it were through fire.
Why, who gives you your superiority, my brother? Or what have you that you did not receive? And if you really did receive it, why boast as if this were not so?
For even now you are full, even now you have wealth, you have been made kings without us: truly, I would be glad if you were kings, so that we might be kings with you.
For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.
We are evil spoken of, and we pray. We are made as it were the filthiness of the world, the offscouring of all things, even unto this time.
For if you were to have countless
But, as though I were not coming unto you, some are puffed up!
And ye were puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he having done this work might be taken away from the midst of you.
For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
as if I were present, judged him who hath so done this, In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit,
In my letter I said to you that you were not to keep company with those who go after the desires of the flesh;
Not that in this world you were actually to have no contact with the immoral, the avaricious, the thievish, or with idolaters; for then you would have to leave the world, altogether.
But what I wrote was that you were not to associate with any so-called brother who is immoral, or avaricious, or idolatrous, or abusive, or a drunkard, or an extortioner. No, with such persons do not even sit at table.
And such were some of you; but you have been washed, you have been made holy, you have been given righteousness in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
for ye were bought with a price; glorify, then, God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.
Now, concerning the things whereof ye wrote, it were, good, for a man, not to touch, a woman;
But I say this by way of advice, not by way of precept. For I would that all men were even as myself:
For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
But I say, to the unmarried, and to the widows, good, were it for them, that they should abide, even as I;
But as to the other cases, which were not decided by the Lord; I say, if any brother has a pagan wife, who likes to live with him, let him not put her away.
For the husband that believeth not is hallowed in the wife, and the wife that believeth not is hallowed in the brother: else were, your children, impure, but, now, are they, pure.
If you were a servant when you became a Christian, let it not be a grief to you; but if you have a chance to become free, make use of it.
You were bought
But I say this, brothers; there is not much time left [i.e., before the crisis arrives in full fury. See verse 26]. From now on those men who are married should live as though they were single.
and those that mourn as though they did not mourn, and those who are glad as though they were not glad, and those who buy as though they did not own a thing,
and those who are enjoying the world as though they were not entirely absorbed in it. For the outward order of this world is passing away.
For [even] if there were things called "gods," whether in heaven or on earth; [and even if] there were many "gods" and many "lords,"
However not all men
For if any one should see you, the possessor of "knowledge," reclining at table in an idol's temple, would not his conscience, if he were weak, be emboldened to eat things sacrificed to idols?
so the Lord's instructions were that those who proclaim the gospel are to get their living by the gospel?
I, however, have not used any of these things; and have not written these things, in order that, so it should be done, in my case; for it were, good for me, rather to die than - - my boast, shall, no man, make void!
Therefore became I, to the Jews, as, a Jew, - that, Jews, I might win; to them who were under law, as, under law, not being, myself, under law, - that, them who were under law, I might win;
To them who were without law, as, without law, - not being without law to God, but lawfully subject to Christ, - that I might win them who were without law.
So then I run, not as if I were uncertain. And so I fight, not as one who beats the air.
For it is my desire, my brothers, that you may keep in mind how all our fathers were under the cloud, and they all went through the sea;
And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
and all the same spiritual drink did drink, for they were drinking of a spiritual rock following them, and the rock was the Christ;
Nevertheless, with the most of them, God, was not well-pleased, for they were strewed along in the desert.
Now these things were for an example to us, so that our hearts might not go after evil things, as they did.
Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
Neither let us commit fornication as some of them committed fornication, and were destroyed - in one day, twenty three thousand.
Neither let us be putting the Lord to the test, as, some of them, put him to the test, and, by the serpents, were perishing;
Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
Now these things were done as an example; and were put down in writing for our teaching, on whom the last days have come.
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
For, if a woman doth not veil herself, let her also be shorn; but, if it were a shame in a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be veiled.
But if we were true judges of ourselves, punishment would not come on us.
You are conscious that when you were Gentiles, in whatever way you were guided, you went after images without voice or power.
For through the baptism of the one Spirit we were all formed into one body, Jews or Greeks, servants or free men, and were all made full of the same Spirit.
Were the foot to say, "Because I am not a hand I am not a part of the body," that would not make it any the less a part of the body.
Or were the ear to say, "Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body," that would not make it any the less a part of the body.
If, the whole body, were, an eye, where were the hearing? If, the whole were, hearing, where were, the smelling?
And if they were all one part, where would the body be?
Though I spake with the tongues of men and angels, and yet had no love, I were even as sounding brass: or as a tinkling cymbal.
And though I could prophesy, and understood all secrets, and all knowledge: yea, if I had all faith so that I could move mountains out of their places, and yet had no love, I were nothing.
For the person who speaks in a language [supernaturally] does not speak to people, but to God, for no one can understand him [i.e., unless there is an interpreter or it is the person's native language]; he speaks [previously] unrevealed truths under the influence of the Holy Spirit [or "in his spirit"]. [Note: For a correct understanding of this chapter, it must be kept in mind that Paul is addressing a misuse ofthe gift of speaking in languages supernaturally. The Corinthians were doing this in the wrong way and for the wrong purpose].
I should be right glad were you all to speak in 'tongues,' but yet more glad were you all to prophesy. And, in fact, the man who prophesies is superior to him who speaks in 'tongues,' except when the latter can interpret in order that the Church may get a blessing.
Suppose now I were to come to you speaking with 'tongues,' my brothers; what good could I do you, unless I had some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching to lay before you?
So, unless you people also speak clearly with your tongue, how will your speaking be understood? For it will be like you were speaking into the air.
Did the message of God originate from you [i.e., the church in Corinth]? Or, were you people the only ones who received it?
and last of all, he was seen by me too, who am as it were an abortive;
Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.
Then also those that fell asleep in Christ were lost.
But Christ is actually risen, as previous to those who were dead.
but every one in proper order: Christ has the precedence, next they who were Christians shall rise at his advent.
Otherwise [i.e., if there were no resurrection], what do people accomplish by being immersed for those who have [already] died? If dead people are not raised up at all, why then are people immersed on their behalf? [Note: The foregoing rendition is the most commonly held one of over
Why do we also risk danger every hour [i.e., if there were no resurrection]?
So allow no one to treat him with disdain [as if he were inconsequential]. But send him off [cordially, and speed him on his way] in peace, so that he may come to me, for I am expecting him [to come along] with the other brothers.
You know brethren, that the family of Stephanas were the first converts of Achaia, and have made it their business to be serviceable to christian converts: to such,
And I was glad when Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus arrived [here in Ephesus], for they have provided [me] with what you were not able to.
The churches in Asia send you their greetings [Note: This was the westernmost province in present-day Turkey]. Aquila and Prisca [Note: This married couple were close friends and fellow-tentmakers of Paul], along with the church that meets in their house, send you their warm greetings in [fellowship with] Christ.
For we do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, as to our tribulation which happened in Asia, - that, exceedingly, beyond power, were we weighed down, so that we despaired, even of life.
Indeed, our main ground for satisfaction is this--Our conscience tells us that our conduct in the world, and still more in our relations with you, was marked by a purity of motive and a sincerity that were inspired by God, and was based, not on worldly policy, but on the help of God.
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we were preaching among you, even I and Silvanus and Timothy, was not Yes and No, but in him is Yes.
For, many as were the promises of God, in Christ is the 'Yes' that fulfils them. Therefore, through Christ again, let the 'Amen' rise, through us, to the glory of God.
After all, if I were to grieve you, who should make me happy but the person I am making sad?
For this very purpose also I wrote you (before), that I might test you, to see if you were obedient in every respect.
not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as it were of ourselves; but our ableness cometh of God;
and if the ministration of the death, in letters, engraved in stones, came in glory, so that the sons of Israel were not able to look stedfastly to the face of Moses, because of the glory of his face -- which was being made useless,
and do not as Moses, who put a veil upon his face, intimating that the children of Israel could not look to the end of that which was to be abolished; but their minds were blinded:
But their thoughts were turned into stone: for, until this very day, the same veil, upon the reading of the old covenant, abideth, not to be removed, because, in Christ, it is to be done away;
But all of us [Christians], with unveiled faces, see the Lord's splendor reflected, as [though we were] looking in a mirror, and [so] are being transformed into His likeness in ever-increasing splendor. This is [the work] of the Lord, [who is] the Holy Spirit.
For this, having this service, as we were compassionated, we lose not courage;
