a slave has no right to be in the house for life: but the son is settled there.
I know you are Abraham's offspring; but ye seek to kill me, because my doctrine doth not penetrate into you.
but now ye seek to kill me, the man who has told you the truth, such as I have learnt it of God: Abraham did not act thus.
your actions are like your father. at this they reply'd, we are no bastards; we have but one father, even God.
Jesus said to them, if God were your father, ye would love me: for I was commissioned by God to come; I did not come of my self, but he sent me.
but as to me, because I tell you the truth, you do not believe me.
Jesus answered, I am not mad; but I honour my father, and you dishonour me.
yet ye have not known him, but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I should be a lyar like you: but I know him, and observe his commands.
then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus was conceal'd by the crowd which he pass'd thro', and so got out of the temple.

then they reviled him, and said, thou art his disciple; but we are Moses disciples.
now 'tis certain, that God does not countenance impostors: but regards him only that is religious, and executes his commands.

but he that enters in by the door, is the pastor of the sheep.
a stranger they will not follow, but flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
Jesus talk'd to them in this figurative way: but they did not understand the meaning of his discourse.
they who have personated me, are all thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not follow them.
the thief comes only to steal, to kill, and destroy: but I am come that they might have life, and have it with all its advantages.
but the hireling, who is not the pastor, nor has the property of the sheep, seeing the wolf come, leaves the sheep, and flies away: so the wolf seizes some, and disperses the flock.
other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring; they will hear my voice; and so there shall be but one fold, and one pastor.

now Bethany being distant from Jerusalem but about fifteen furlongs,
Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet him: but Mary stay'd at home.
but yet even now whatever you shall ask of God, I know God will grant it to you.
no sooner she heard that, but she arose with all speed, and came to him.
for Jesus was not yet arrived in the town, but staid at the place were Martha met him.

but one of them named Caiaphas, being the high priest at that time, said to them, ye don't know what you are about.
now this he did not say from his own motion: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation:
and not for that nation only, but likewise to reassemble the dispersed children of God into one body.
For which reason he did not afterwards appear publickly among the Jews; but retir'd into the country near the desart, to a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

"Now is my soul troubled; what! shall I say, father, save me from this concern? but for this cause am I come, even for this very concern.
Jesus said, this voice came not for my sake, but for yours.
But though he had done so many miracles in their presence, yet they did not believe on him:
nevertheless there were many even among the chief rulers, who believed on him; but they did not own it publickly for fear the Pharisees should excommunicate them.
but if any man hear my words, and does not believe them, it is not I that condemn him: for I came not to condemn the world, but to save the world.

my dear children, I am with you but for a little while. you shall seek me: but as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you, "where I am going you cannot come."

Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man can come to the father, but by me.

this I have told you now, before it come to pass, that when it is come to pass, ye may believe. my conversation will now be but short with you,
not that he has any thing against me, but that the world may know that I love the father, by my executing the commands which my father gave me: arise, let us go hence.

but when the advocate is come, whom I will send to you from the father, even the spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the father, he shall testify of me.
but these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember what I now tell you. I did not tell you so much at the beginning, because, I was then to be with you.
but now I am going to him that sent me; yet none of you ask me now, whither are you going?
nevertheless, I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I do not go away, the advocate will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him to you.
I have yet many things to tell you, but ye cannot bear them now;

a woman when she is in travail, is afflicted at the approach of her pains: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, the remembrance of her anguish, is lost in her joy, that a man is born into the world.
so you are afflicted at present: but I will see you again, and then shall your hearts be affected with joy, and your joy shall no one wrest from you.
These things have I express'd in a figurative way: the time is coming when my language will be no longer enigmatical, but I shall give you a plain account relating to my father.
