Thus did Job continually.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

And Jehovah said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God and abstaineth from evil?

And the Satan said in answer to the Lord, Is it for nothing that Job is a god-fearing man?

Have you not put a fence around him and his household and around {all that belongs to him} {on every side}? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock has increased in the land.

And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

And there came a messenger to Job and said, The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them;

And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

When they lifted up their eyes from a distance, and didn't recognize him, they raised their voices, and wept; and they each tore his robe, and sprinkled dust on their heads toward the sky.

And they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights; and none spoke a word to him; for they saw that his anguish was very great.

and said, "Let the day perish, wherein I was born,

Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

That night -- let thick darkness take it, Let it not be united to days of the year, Into the number of months let it not come.

Despised be that night, and discommended: let them that curse the day,

Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:

because it didn't shut up the doors of my mother's womb, nor did it hide trouble from my eyes.

Why did the knees receive me,
and why were there breasts for me to nurse?

For now, I have lain down, and am quiet, I have slept -- then there is rest to me,

along with kings and counselors of the earth, who used to build for themselves what are now only ruins,

Or with chiefs, gold to them, filling their houses with silver:

[the] prisoners are at ease together; they do not hear [the] oppressor's voice.

Who are glad with great joy, and full of delight when they come to their last resting-place;

Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

"As far as I'm concerned, my food comes to me in the form of sighs, and my cries of anguish pour out like water.

For I feared a fear, and it hath come upon me, and that which I dreaded hath come to me.

I am not at ease, and I am not at peace, and I do not have rest, thus turmoil has come."

If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?

Truly, you have been a helper to others, and you have made feeble hands strong;

The stumbling one do thy words raise up, And bowing knees thou dost strengthen.

But now it has come to you, and you are worn out; it touches you, and you are horrified.

Isn’t your piety your confidence,
and the integrity of your life your hope?

Have you ever seen destruction come to an upright man? or when were the god-fearing ever cut off?

By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they come to an end.

An old lion is perishing without prey, And the whelps of the lioness do separate.

Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.

A spirit glided past me and made the hair on my skin to bristle.

It stood still, but I couldn't discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes. Silence, then I heard a voice, saying,

how much more to those who live in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed like a moth?

They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.

Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.

Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?

His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.

Their produce is taken by him who has no food, and their grain goes to the poor, and he who is in need of water gets it from their spring.

For affliction doesn't come forth from the dust, neither does trouble spring out of the ground;


“He catches the [so-called] wise in their own shrewdness,
And the advice of the devious is quickly thwarted.

They meet with darkness in the day-time, And grope at noonday as in the night.

And there is hope to the poor, And perverseness hath shut her mouth.

"He will deliver you through six calamities; and calamity won't touch you throughout the seventh.

He shall keep thee from the perilous tongue so that when trouble cometh, thou shalt not need to fear.

See, we have made search with care, and it is so; it has come to our ears; see that you take note of it for yourself.


“Oh, that my grief could actually be weighed
And placed in the balances together with my tragedy [to see if my grief is the grief of a coward]!

For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.


“Can something that has no taste to it be eaten without salt?
Or is there any flavor in the white of an egg?

If only I might have an answer to my prayer, and God would give me my desire!

Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

Be it still my consolation, yes, let me exult in pain that doesn't spare, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

What strength do I have that I should continue to hope?
What is my future, that I should be patient?
