'Life' in the Bible
saying, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's life are dead."
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isn't there more to life than food and more to the body than clothing?
And which of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life?
But the gate is narrow and the way is difficult that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life because of me will find it.
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life?
If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.
And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into fiery hell.
Now someone came up to him and said, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to gain eternal life?"
He said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments."
And whoever has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
And these will depart into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
Then he said to them, "Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath, or evil, to save a life or destroy it?" But they were silent.
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it.
For what benefit is it for a person to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his life?
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into life crippled than to have two hands and go into hell, to the unquenchable fire.
If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.
Now as Jesus was starting out on his way, someone ran up to him, fell on his knees, and said, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
who will not receive in this age a hundred times as much -- homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, fields, all with persecutions -- and in the age to come, eternal life.
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?"
As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
Now an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Then he said to them, "Watch out and guard yourself from all types of greed, because one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded back from you, but who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear.
For there is more to life than food, and more to the body than clothing.
And which of you by worrying can add an hour to his life?
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it.
Now a certain ruler asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
who will not receive many times more in this age -- and in the age to come, eternal life."
"But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap.
so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."
For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
The one who believes in the Son has eternal life. The one who rejects the Son will not see life, but God's wrath remains on him.
But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life."
The one who reaps receives pay and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together.
For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes.
"I tell you the solemn truth, the one who hears my message and believes the one who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned, but has crossed over from death to life.
For just as the Father has life in himself, thus he has granted the Son to have life in himself,
and will come out -- the ones who have done what is good to the resurrection resulting in life, and the ones who have done what is evil to the resurrection resulting in condemnation.
You study the scriptures thoroughly because you think in them you possess eternal life, and it is these same scriptures that testify about me,
but you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.
Do not work for the food that disappears, but for the food that remains to eternal life -- the food which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has put his seal of approval on him."
For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never go hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty.
For this is the will of my Father -- for everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."
I tell you the solemn truth, the one who believes has eternal life.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."
Jesus said to them, "I tell you the solemn truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves.
The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
Then Jesus spoke out again, "I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
just as the Father knows me and I know the Father -- and I lay down my life for the sheep.
This is why the Father loves me -- because I lay down my life, so that I may take it back again.
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; no one will snatch them from my hand.
Jesus replied, "Your brother will come back to life again."
Martha said, "I know that he will come back to life again in the resurrection at the last day."
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies,
The one who loves his life destroys it, and the one who hates his life in this world guards it for eternal life.
And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Thus the things I say, I say just as the Father has told me."
Peter said to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!"
Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? I tell you the solemn truth, the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!
Jesus replied, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
No one has greater love than this -- that one lays down his life for his friends.
just as you have given him authority over all humanity, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him.
Now this is eternal life -- that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent.
But these are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of joy with your presence.'
You killed the Originator of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this fact we are witnesses!
"Go and stand in the temple courts and proclaim to the people all the words of this life."
In humiliation justice was taken from him. Who can describe his posterity? For his life was taken away from the earth."
When they heard this, they ceased their objections and praised God, saying, "So then, God has granted the repentance that leads to life even to the Gentiles."
Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously, "It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we are turning to the Gentiles.
When the Gentiles heard this, they began to rejoice and praise the word of the Lord, and all who had been appointed for eternal life believed.
nor is he served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives life and breath and everything to everyone.
But I do not consider my life worth anything to myself, so that I may finish my task and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God's grace.
Paul looked directly at the council and said, "Brothers, I have lived my life with a clear conscience before God to this day."
Now all the Jews know the way I lived from my youth, spending my life from the beginning among my own people and in Jerusalem.
And now I advise you to keep up your courage, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only the ship will be lost.
But the centurion, wanting to save Paul's life, prevented them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land,
eternal life to those who by perseverance in good works seek glory and honor and immortality,
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more, since we have been reconciled, will we be saved by his life?
For if, by the transgression of the one man, death reigned through the one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ!
Consequently, just as condemnation for all people came through one transgression, so too through the one righteous act came righteousness leading to life for all people.
so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace will reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life.
For the death he died, he died to sin once for all, but the life he lives, he lives to God.
But now, freed from sin and enslaved to God, you have your benefit leading to sanctification, and the end is eternal life.
For the payoff of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
