Look, if God doesn't trust his holy ones, if even the heavens aren't pure as he looks at them,

I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;


“A [dreadful] sound of terrors is in his ears;
While at peace and in a time of prosperity the destroyer comes upon him [the tent of the robber is not at peace].

He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

Distress and anguish shall startle him, It shall overpower him, like a king ready for the onset:

For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

He rushes headlong at Him
with his thick, studded shields.

Though his face is covered with fat
and his waistline bulges with it,

And he will dwell in cities out off, the houses shall not be inhabited by them, which were ready for heaps.

He is not rich, nor doth his wealth rise, Nor doth he stretch out on earth their continuance.

He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

Let him not put trust in worthless things, being led astray,
for what he gets in exchange will prove worthless.

"I've heard many things like this. What miserable comforters you all are!

I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you.

and encourage you with what I have to say; my words of comfort would lessen your pain.

Only, now, it hath wearied me; Thou hast desolated all my company,

And thou hast laid fast hold on me, which is a witness against me : And my leanness riseth up against me, It testifieth to my face.

His anger teareth and pursueth me; he gnasheth with his teeth against me; as mine adversary he sharpeneth his eyes at me.


“They have gaped at me with their mouths,
With contempt they have struck me on the cheek;
They massed themselves together [and conspired] against me.

I was at ease, but he hath broken me asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.

His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground.


“He attacks me, making wound after wound;
He runs at me like a warrior.


“O earth, do not cover my blood,
And let there be no [resting] place for my cry [where it will cease being heard].

My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.

and it argues for a mortal with God, and [as] {a human} for his friend.

yet the number of my years are come - and I must go the way from whence I shall not turn again.

Surely mockers surround me
and my eyes must gaze at their rebellion.

Appoint it, I pray thee - be thou surety for me with thyself, Who is there that, on my side, can pledge himself?

He promiseth his friends part of his good, but his own children spend it.

He has made me an object of scorn to the people;
I have become a man people spit at.

Upright men shall be astonied at this, and the innocent shall stir up himself against the hypocrite.

Yet shall the righteous hold on his way, And he that hath clean hands shall wax stronger and stronger.

But indeed, as for them all, will ye bethink yourselves and enter into it, I pray you? Or shall I not find, among you, one who is wise?

If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness.

if I call out to the Pit, "You're my father!' or say to the worm, "My mother!' or "My sister!'

It shall go down to the bars of Sheol, When once there is rest in the dust.

How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak.

He teareth himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for thee? and shall the rock be removed out of his place?

Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.

The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him.

For his feet shall be taken in the net, and he is at his wits end.

Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, And shall chase him at his heels.

His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side.

It shall devour the strength of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength.

His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors.

It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

Under the earth his roots are dry, and over it his branch is cut off.

His memorial, have perished out of the land, and let him have no name over the face of the open field;

They that come after him shall be astonied at his day, as they that went before were affrighted.

"How long do you intend to keep torturing me and trying to break me by what you're saying?

Ten times now you have made sport of me; it gives you no sense of shame to do me wrong.

then understand that it is God who has wronged me
and caught me in His net.

He is breaking me down on every side, and now it's too late for me; he has uprooted my hopes like a tree.

At my cry my servant gives me no answer, and I have to make a prayer to him.

And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:

I will see Him myself;
my eyes will look at Him, and not as a stranger.
My heart longs within me.

“If you say, ‘How shall we persecute him?’
And ‘What pretext for a case against him can we find?’

Make sure that you remain wary of God's sword, for God's wrath brings with it the sword of punishment, by which you'll know there's a judgment."


“Therefore my disquieting thoughts make me answer,
Because of the uneasiness that is within me.


“I have heard the reproof which insults me,
But the spirit of my understanding makes me answer.

"Surely you know that it has been from old, ever since humankind was placed on the earth,

Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?

The eye that hath scanned him, shall not do it again, neither, any more, shall his place behold him:

Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him.

He shall not look at the rivers, the flowing streams of honey and butter.

That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: according to his substance shall the restitution be, and he shall not rejoice therein.
