But Job answered and said,

Oh that my vexation were but weighed, And all my calamity laid in the balances!

But because it is heavier than the sand of the sea, that is why my words have been wild.

My spirit drinks their poison;
The terrors of God are arrayed against me.

My eye will not see good again.

The eye of him that seeth me shall behold me no more; Thine eyes shall be upon me, but I shall not be.

Therefore I will not spare my mouth, but will speak in the trouble of my spirit; in that bitterness of my mind will I talk.

But then you scared me with dreams; you terrified me with visions.

I loathe my life. I don't want to live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.

And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

But if you earnestly seek God
and ask the Almighty for mercy,

No: but before it be shot forth, and before it be gathered, it withereth; before any other herb.

He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.


“If he is snatched from his place [in the garden],
Then his place will forget him, saying, ‘I have never seen you.’

They who hate thee, shall be clothed with shame, but, the tent of the lawless, shall not be!

Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

He is God, whose wrath no man may withstand: but the proudest of all must stoop under him.

Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.

If {it is a matter of} strength, look, [he is] mighty. But if {it is a matter of} justice, who can summon me?

Though I was in the right, he would say that I was in the wrong; I have done no evil; but he says that I am a sinner.


“It is all one; therefore I say,
‘He destroys [both] the blameless and the wicked.’

"My days pass faster than a runner; but they pass quickly without seeing anything good.

Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.

and will say unto God: O do not condemn me; but show me the cause, wherefore thou contendest so with me.

Your hands made me, and I was formed by you, but then, changing your purpose, you gave me up to destruction.

Please remember that you made me like clay, but you turn me into dust [again]?

But you kept these things in the secret of your heart; I am certain this was in your thoughts:

If I am guilty, woe to me! But if I am righteous, I dare not lift my head; [I am] filled [with] shame, and [just] look [at] my misery!

But if I do lift up my head, you will hunt me like a lion! You will perform miracles in order to fight against me.

I wish I had never existed
but had been carried from the womb to the grave.

yea, into a land as dark as darkness itself, and into the shadow of death where is none order; but light there is as darkness."

No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

"I'm a laughingstock to my friends, someone who called on God. But then he answered this upright and blameless man, and I have become a laughingstock.


“He who is at ease has contempt for misfortune,
But misfortune is ready [and anxiously waiting] for those whose feet slip.


“The tents of the destroyers prosper;
And those who provoke God are [apparently] secure,
Whom God brings into their power.

What is he, but he knoweth that the hand of the LORD made all these?

He makes nations great, and then destroys them; he enlarges nations, but then sends them away to captivity.

But I will speak to the Almighty, and will find pleasure in reasoning with God;

Like a flower he comes up, and he withers away; and he flees like a shadow, but he does not last.

If only a clean thing might come out of an unclean! But it is not possible.


“For there is hope for a tree,
If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
And that the shoots of it will not cease nor fail, [but there is no such hope for man].

But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

but when man sleepeth, he riseth not again, until the heaven perish: he shall not wake up nor rise out of his sleep.

If thou wouldest but call me, I should obey thee: only despise not the work of thine own hands.

But now thou numberest my steps: Dost thou not watch over my sin?

Thou hast sealed up mine offenses, as it were in a bag: but be merciful unto my wickedness.

But the mountain falling cometh to nought; And the rock is removed out of its place;

Water wears away stones; floods wash away topsoil from the land but you destroy the hope of human beings just like that!

His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

But you even undermine the fear of God
and hinder meditation before Him.

But thy wickedness teacheth thy mouth, and so thou hast chosen thee a crafty tongue.

What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, but we can the same?


What wise men have [freely] told,
And have not hidden [anything passed on to them] from their fathers,

He does not believe in a return from darkness, but he is awaited by the sword.

Therefore shall his dwelling be in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabits, but are become heaps of stones.


“It will be fulfilled while he still lives,
And his branch will not be green [but shall wither away].

If you were in my place I could also talk like you.
I could string words together against you
and shake my head at you.

"But if I speak, my pain isn't assuaged; if I refrain from speaking, what do I have to lose?"

I was at ease, but he hath broken me asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.

My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.


But You [Lord] have closed their hearts to understanding,
Therefore You will not exalt them [by giving a verdict against me].

He promiseth his friends part of his good, but his own children spend it.

But he hath made me a byword of the people; And they spit in my face.

But the righteous shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall increase in strength.

But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you.


But if I look to Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead) as my home,
If I make my bed in the darkness,

But come back, now, come: you who are wounding yourself in your passion, will the earth be given up because of you, or a rock be moved out of its place?

But even if it were true that I have erred, my error remains solely my concern!
