If a wise man goes to court with a fool, there will be ranting and raving but no resolution.
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man holds it in check.
Do you see a man who speaks too soon? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
An angry man stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered man increases rebellion.
The fear of man is a snare, but the one who trusts in the Lord is protected.
Many seek a ruler’s favor, but a man receives justice from the Lord.
An unjust man is detestable to the righteous, and one whose way is uprightis detestable to the wicked.
the way of an eagle in the sky,the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship at sea,and the way of a man with a young woman.
What does a man gain for all his effortsthat he labors at under the sun?
All things are wearisome;man is unable to speak. The eye is not satisfied by seeingor the ear filled with hearing.
Then I turned to consider wisdom, madness, and folly, for what will the man be like who comes after the king? He will do what has already been done.
The wise man has eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness.Yet I also knew that one fate comes to them both.
For, just like the fool, there is no lasting remembrance of the wise man, since in the days to come both will be forgotten. How is it that the wise man dies just like the fool?
I hated all my work that I labored at under the sun because I must leave it to the man who comes after me.
And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will take over all my work that I labored at skillfully under the sun. This too is futile.
When there is a man whose work was done with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a man who has not worked for it, this too is futile and a great wrong.
For what does a man get with all his work and all his efforts that he labors at under the sun?
There is nothing better for man than to eat, drink, and enjoy his work. I have seen that even this is from God’s hand,
For to the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy, but to the sinner He gives the task of gathering and accumulating in order to give to the one who is pleasing in God’s sight. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.
He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also put eternity in their hearts, but man cannot discover the work God has done from beginning to end.
God has also given riches and wealth to every man, and He has allowed him to enjoy them, take his reward, and rejoice in his labor. This is a gift of God,
God gives a man riches, wealth, and honor so that he lacks nothing of all he desires for himself, but God does not allow him to enjoy them. Instead, a stranger will enjoy them. This is futile and a sickening tragedy.
A man may father a hundred children and live many years. No matter how long he lives, if he is not satisfied by good things and does not even have a proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.
What advantage then does the wise man have over the fool? What advantage is there for the poor person who knows how to conduct himself before others?
Whatever exists was given its name long ago, and it is known what man is. But he is not able to contend with the One stronger than he.
For when there are many words, they increase futility. What is the advantage for man?
For who knows what is good for man in life, in the few days of his futile life that he spends like a shadow? Who can tell man what will happen after him under the sun?
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity, consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man cannot discover anything that will come after him.
In my futile life I have seen everything: there is a righteous man who perishes in spite of his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in spite of his evil.
Wisdom makes the wise man strongerthan ten rulers of a city.
There is certainly no righteous man on the earthwho does good and never sins.
which my soul continually searches for but does not find: among a thousand people I have found one true man, but among all these I have not found a true woman.
All this I have seen, applying my mind to all the work that is done under the sun, at a time when one man has authority over another to his harm.
So I commended enjoyment because there is nothing better for man under the sun than to eat, drink, and enjoy himself, for this will accompany him in his labor during the days of his life that God gives him under the sun.
I observed all the work of God and concluded that man is unable to discover the work that is done under the sun. Even though a man labors hard to explore it, he cannot find it; even if the wise man claims to know it, he is unable to discover it.
For man certainly does not know his time: like fish caught in a cruel net or like birds caught in a trap, so people are trapped in an evil time as it suddenly falls on them.
Now a poor wise man was found in the city, and he delivered the city by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man.
And I said, “Wisdom is better than strength, but the wisdom of the poor man is despised, and his words are not heeded.”
The words from the mouth of a wise man are gracious, but the lips of a fool consume him.
Indeed, if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all,and let him remember the days of darkness, since they will be many. All that comes is futile.
Rejoice, young man, while you are young, and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. And walk in the ways of your heartand in the sight of your eyes;but know that for all of these things God will bring you to judgment.
Also, they are afraid of heights and dangers on the road;the almond tree blossoms,the grasshopper loses its spring,and the caper berry has no effect;for man is headed to his eternal home,and mourners will walk around in the street;
In addition to the Teacher being a wise man, he constantly taught the people knowledge; he weighed, explored, and arranged many proverbs.
Mighty waters cannot extinguish love;rivers cannot sweep it away.If a man were to give all his wealth for love,it would be utterly scorned.
So humanity is brought low,and man is humbled.Do not forgive them!
Put no more trust in man,who has only the breath in his nostrils. What is he really worth?
The people will oppress one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor;the youth will act arrogantly toward the elder, and the worthless toward the honorable.
A man will even seize his brotherin his father’s house, saying:“You have a cloak—you be our leader! This heap of rubble will be under your control.”
On that day seven womenwill seize one man, saying,“We will eat our own breadand provide our own clothing.Just let us be called by your name.Take away our disgrace.”
Humanity is brought low, man is humbled, and haughty eyes are humbled.
Then I said:Woe is me for I am ruinedbecause I am a man of unclean lipsand live among a people of unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts.
A man will go there with bow and arrowsbecause the whole land will be thorns and briers.
I will make man scarcer than gold, and mankind more rare than the gold of Ophir.
Those who see you will stare at you;they will look closely at you:“Is this the man who caused the earth to tremble, who shook the kingdoms,
Look, you strong man! The Lord is about to shake you violently. He will take hold of you,
The Lord said:Because these people approach Me with their mouthsto honor Me with lip-service—yet their hearts are far from Me,and their worship consists of man-made ruleslearned by rote—
Then Assyria will fall, but not by human sword;a sword will devour him,but not one made by man.He will flee from the sword;his young men will be put to forced labor.
It serves as fuel for man.He takes some of it and warms himself;also he kindles a fire and bakes bread;he even makes it into a god and worships it;he makes an idol from it and bows down to it.
I made the earth, and created man on it.It was My hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.
I call a bird of prey from the east,a man for My purpose from a far country.Yes, I have spoken; so I will also bring it about.I have planned it; I will also do it.
For this is what the Lord says:“Even the captives of a mighty man will be taken, and the prey of a tyrant will be delivered;I will contend with the one who contends with you,and I will save your children.
I—I am the One who comforts you.Who are you that you should fear man who dies,or a son of man who is given up like grass?
Just as many were appalled at You—His appearance was so disfiguredthat He did not look like a man,and His form did not resemble a human being—
He was despised and rejected by men,a man of suffering who knew what sickness was.He was like someone people turned away from;He was despised, and we didn’t value Him.
They made His grave with the wickedand with a rich man at His death, although He had done no violenceand had not spoken deceitfully.
Happy is the man who does this, anyone who maintains this, who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it,and keeps his hand from doing any evil.
For I will not accuse you forever, and I will not always be angry;for then the spirit would grow weak before Me,even the breath of man, which I have made.
He saw that there was no man—He was amazed that there was no one interceding;so His own arm brought salvation, and His own righteousness supported Him.
For as a young man marries a young woman,so your sons will marry you;and as a groom rejoices over his bride,so your God will rejoice over you.
In her, a nursing infant will no longer liveonly a few days,or an old man not live out his days.Indeed, the youth will die at a hundred years, and the one who misses a hundred years will be cursed.
One slaughters an ox, one kills a man;one sacrifices a lamb, one breaks a dog’s neck;one offers a grain offering, one offers pig’s blood;one offers incense, one praises an idol—all these have chosen their waysand delight in their detestable practices.
I looked, and no man was left;all the birds of the sky had fled.
Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: “Look, My anger—My burning wrath—is about to be poured out on this place, on man and beast, on the tree of the field, and on the produce of the land. My wrath will burn and not be quenched.”
Their tongues are deadly arrows—they speak deception. With his moutha man speaks peaceably with his friend, but inwardly he sets up an ambush.
Who is the man wise enough to understand this? Who has the Lord spoken to, that he may explain it? Why is the land destroyed and scorched like a wilderness, so no one can pass through?
You must tell them: This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let a curse be on the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,
Why are You like a helpless man, like a warrior unable to save?Yet You are among us, Yahweh, and we are called by Your name.Don’t leave us!
Woe is me, my mother, that you gave birth to me,a man who incites dispute and conflictin all the land.I did not lend or borrow, yet everyone curses me.
This is what the Lord says:The man who trusts in mankind, who makes human flesh his strengthand turns his heart from the Lord is cursed.
The man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence indeed is the Lord, is blessed.
May the man be cursedwho brought the news to my father, saying,“A male child is born to you,”bringing him great joy.
Let that man be like the citiesthe Lord demolished without compassion.Let him hear an outcry in the morningand a war cry at noontime
I will strike the residents of this city, both man and beast. They will die in a great plague.
Woe for the one who builds his palacethrough unrighteousness, his upper rooms through injustice, who makes his fellow man serve without payand will not give him his wages,
Is this man Coniah a despised, shattered pot,a jar no one wants? Why are he and his descendants hurled outand cast into a land they have not known?
This is what the Lord says:Record this man as childless,a man who will not be successful in his lifetime.None of his descendants will succeedin sitting on the throne of Davidor ruling again in Judah.
Concerning the prophets:My heart is broken within me,and all my bones tremble.I have become like a drunkard, like a man overcome by wine, because of the Lord, because of His holy words.
Can a man hide himself in secret places where I cannot see him?”—the Lord’s declaration. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?”—the Lord’s declaration.
“As for the prophet, priest, or people who say, ‘The burden of the Lord,’ I will punish that man and his household.
This is what each man is to say to his friend and to his brother, ‘What has the Lord answered?’ or ‘What has the Lord spoken?’
Then the priests and prophets said to the officials and all the people, “This man deserves the death sentence because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”
Then the officials and all the people told the priests and prophets, “This man doesn’t deserve the death sentence, for he has spoken to us in the name of Yahweh our God!”
Another man was also prophesying in the name of Yahweh—Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land in words like all those of Jeremiah.
Ask and seewhether a male can give birth. Why then do I see every manwith his hands on his stomach like a woman in laborand every face turned pale?
How long will you turn here and there, faithless daughter? For the Lord creates something new in the land—a female will shelter a man.
“The days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast.
Fields will be bought in this land about which you are saying, ‘It’s a desolation without man or beast; it has been handed over to the Chaldeans!’
“This is what the Lord says: In this place, which you say is a ruin, without man or beast—that is, in Judah’s cities and Jerusalem’s streets that are a desolation without man, without inhabitant, and without beast—there will be heard again
“This is what the Lord of Hosts says: In this desolate place—without man or beast—and in all its cities there will once more be a grazing land where shepherds may rest flocks.
