Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.

Now Jesus loved and was concerned about Martha and her sister and Lazarus [and considered them dear friends].

he still remained where he was for two days; then after that he said to his disciples, "Let us go back again to Judea."

Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was speaking about resting or sleeping.

Then said Jesus to them plainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sake I was not there, that ye may believe:

and a considerable number of the Jews were with Martha and Mary, having come to express sympathy with them on the death of their brother.

Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou were here, my brother would not have died.

She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed and continue to believe that You are the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), the Son of God, He who was [destined and promised] to come into the world [and it is for You that the world has waited].”

The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

I knew that You always hear Me and listen to Me; but I have said this because of the people standing around, so that they may believe that You have sent Me [and that You have made Me Your representative].”

And he that was dead, came forth bound hand and foot, with grave bonds after the manner as they were wont to bind their dead withal. And his face was bound with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, "Loose him, and let him go."

Many therefore of the Jews who were come to Mary, and had seen the things, which Jesus had done, believed on him.

Nor do you understand that it is expedient and politically advantageous for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”

So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.

they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, 'What doth appear to you -- that he may not come to the feast?'

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

So they gave a dinner there in honour of Jesus, at which Martha waited at table, but Lazarus was one of the guests who were with Him.

“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and [the money] given to the poor?”

On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

took the branches of the palms, and went forth to meet him, and were crying, 'Hosanna, blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord -- the king of Israel;'

These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

The multitude, therefore, who are with him, were testifying that he called Lazarus out of the tomb, and did raise him out of the dead;

Then the Pharisees [argued and] said to one another, “You see that your efforts are futile. Look! The whole world has gone [running] after Him!”

these then came near to Philip, who is from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, 'Sir, we wish to see Jesus;'

[Rather, I will say,] ‘Father, glorify (honor, extol) Your name!’” Then a voice came from heaven saying, “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

the multitude, therefore, having stood and heard, were saying that there hath been thunder; others said, 'A messenger hath spoken to him.'

In so far as you have the light, put your faith in the light so that you may become sons of light. With these words Jesus went away and for a time was not seen again by them.

He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so that they would not see with their eyes
or understand with their hearts,
and be converted,
and I would heal them.

And if any man gives ear to my words and does not keep them, I am not his judge: I did not come to be judge of the world but to give salvation to the world.

For I have never spoken on My own initiative or authority, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment regarding what to say and what to speak.

And I know that [obeying] His commandments [leads to] never ending life. So, the things which I say are what the Father has told me [to say]."

while they were at supper, (the devil having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him) Jesus,

When He came to Simon Peter, he said to Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”

When, therefore, he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and reclined, again said he unto them - Are ye taking note, what I have done unto you?

I am not speaking of all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but things are as they are in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled, which says, 'He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'

the disciples were looking, therefore, one at another, doubting concerning whom he speaketh.

He leaned back from where he lay, on Jesus' breast, and said to him, "Master, who is it?"

After [Judas had taken] the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly [without delay].”

But no one reclining at the table knew why He said this to him.

If God were honoured in him, also shall God honour him in himself, and quickly shall he honour him.

If ye had been getting to know me, my Father also, had ye known: from henceforth, are ye getting to know him, and have seen him.

Philip said to him, Lord shew us the father, and we are satisfied.

Truly, truly, I tell you, the person who believes in me will perform the deeds that I do also; and he will perform even greater deeds than these, because I am going to the Father. [Note: The "greater deeds" are probably evangelizing the world].
