(Now they were saying this to test him, so that they would have [an occasion] to bring charges against him.) But Jesus, bending down, began to write with [his] finger on the ground, taking no notice.
So they were saying to him, "Where is your father?" Jesus replied, "You know neither me nor my Father! If you had known me, you would have known my Father also."
Jesus said to them, "If God were your father, you would love me, for I have come forth from God and have come. For I have not come from myself, but that one sent me.
And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you! But I know him and I keep his word.
Abraham your father rejoiced that he would see my day, and he saw [it] and was glad."
(His parents said these [things] because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already decided that if anyone should confess him [to be] Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue.
If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything!"
Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.
So Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
Then Mary, when she came where Jesus was [and] saw him, fell at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
But some of them said, "Was not this man who opened the eyes of the blind able to do [something] so that this man also would not have died?"
Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"
and not for the nation only, but also that the children of God who are scattered would be gathered into one.)
So the chief priests decided that they would kill Lazarus also,
in order that the word of the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled, who said, "Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"
Yet despite that, even many of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess [it], so that they would not be expelled from the synagogue.
Now before the feast of Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, [and] having loved [his] own in the world, loved them to the end.
(For he knew the one who would betray him; because of this he said, "Not all [of you] are clean.")
"I am not speaking about all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but in order that the scripture would be fulfilled, 'The one who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'
In my Father's house there are many dwelling places; but if not, I would have told you, because I am going away to prepare a place for you.
If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you know him and have seen him."
You have heard that I said to you, 'I am going away, and I am coming to you.' If you loved me, you would have rejoiced that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I [am].
If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, for this [reason] the world hates you.
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin. But now they do not have a valid excuse for their sin.
If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father.
But [this happened] so that the word that is written in their law would be fulfilled, 'They hated me without a reason.'
just as you have given him authority over all flesh, in order that he would give eternal life to them--everyone whom you have given him.
When I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given to me, and guarded [them], and none of them has perished except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture would be fulfilled.
in order that the word that he had spoken would be fulfilled: "Those whom you have given to me--I have not lost anyone of them."
Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's residence. Now it was early, and they did not enter into the governor's residence so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.
They answered and said to him, "If this man were not doing evil, we would not have handed him over to you!"
in order that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled that he had spoken, indicating by what sort of death he was going to die.
Jesus replied, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here."
Jesus replied to him, "You would not have any authority over me unless it was given to you from above. For this [reason] the one who handed me over to you has greater sin."
So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it apart, but cast lots for it, [to see] whose it will be," so that the scripture would be fulfilled that says, "They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots." Thus the soldiers did these [things].
After this, Jesus, knowing that now at last everything was completed, in order that the scripture would be fulfilled, said, "I am thirsty."
Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was an important day), asked Pilate that their legs could be broken and they could be taken away.
For these [things] happened in order that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not a bone of his will be broken."
(Now he said this to indicate by what kind of death he would glorify God.) And [after he] had said this, he said to him, "Follow me!"
So this saying went out to the brothers that that disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but "If I want him to remain until I come, what [is that] to you?"
Now there are also many other [things] that Jesus did, which--if they were written down one after the other--I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books that would be written.
But [the things] which God foretold through the mouth of all the prophets, [that] his Christ would suffer, he has fulfilled in this way.
so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and put [them] on cots and mats so that [when] Peter came by, at least [his] shadow would fall on some of them.
This man deceitfully took advantage of our people [and] mistreated our ancestors, {causing them to abandon their infants} so that they would not be kept alive.
And he thought his brothers would understand that God was granting deliverance to them by his hand, but they did not understand.
who went down [and] prayed for them so that they would receive the Holy Spirit.
'Look, you scoffers, and be astonished and perish! For I am doing a work in your days, a work that you would never believe [even] if someone were to tell [it] to you.'"
For so the Lord has commanded us: 'I have appointed you {to be} a light for the Gentiles, {that you would bring} salvation to the end of the earth.'
But [when] Paul was about to open [his] mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, "If it was some crime or wicked villainy, O Jews, {I would have been justified in accepting} your complaint.
But [when] Paul wanted to enter into the popular assembly, the disciples would not let him.
For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so that he would not be [having] to spend time in Asia. For he was hurrying if it could be possible for him to be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost.
how I did not shrink from proclaiming to you anything that would be profitable, and [from] teaching you in public and from house [to house],
And [because] he would not be persuaded, we remained silent, saying, "The will of the Lord be done."
Then Paul took along the men on the next day, [and] [after he] had purified himself together with them, he entered into the temple [courts], announcing the completion of the days of purification until {the time} the offering would be presented on behalf of each one of them.
And [when it] was day, the Jews made a conspiracy [and] bound themselves under a curse, saying [they would] neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
And [when it] was made known to me there would be a plot against the man, I sent [him] to you immediately, also ordering [his] accusers to speak against him before you.
At the same time he was also hoping that money would be given to him by Paul. For this reason also he sent for him as often as possible [and] talked with him.
And when it was decided [that] we would sail away to Italy, they handed over Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion {named} Julius of the Augustan Cohort.
But [when] neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and [with] not a little bad weather confronting [us], finally all hope was abandoned [that] we would be saved.
Now the plan of the soldiers was that they would kill the prisoners lest any escape [by] swimming away,
But we would like to hear from you what you think, for concerning this sect it is known to us that it is spoken against everywhere."
For the heart of this people has become dull, and with [their] ears they hear with difficulty, and they have shut their eyes, lest they see with [their] eyes, and hear with [their] ears, and understand with [their] heart, and turn, and I would heal them." '
Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to immorality, [that] their bodies would be dishonored among themselves,
For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants, [that] he would be heir of the world, [was] not through the law, but through the righteousness by faith.
so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
What then shall we say? [Is] the law sin? May it never be! But I would not have known sin except through the law, for I would not have known covetousness if the law had not said, "Do not covet."
in order that the requirement of the law would be fulfilled in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
And just as Isaiah foretold, "If the Lord of hosts had not left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom and would have resembled Gomorrah."
But if by grace, [it is] no longer by works, for otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

which none of the rulers of this age knew. For if they had known [it], they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

But I have not made use of any of these [rights]. And I am not writing these [things] in order that it may be thus with me. For [it would be] better to me rather to die than [for] anyone to deprive me of my reason for boasting.
But if we were evaluating ourselves, we would not be judged.
If the whole body [were] an eye, where [would] the hearing [be]? If the whole [were] hearing, where [would] the sense of smell [be]?
And if they all were one member, where [would] the body [be]?
in order that there not be a division in the body, but the members would have the same concern for one another.
But [we] ourselves had the sentence of death in ourselves, so that we would not be putting confidence in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead,
And I wrote this very [thing] in order that [when I] came, I would not experience sorrow from those who ought to have made me glad, [because I] have confidence about you all, that my joy {belongs to all of you}.
and not as Moses used to place a veil over his face, in order that the sons of Israel would not stare at the end of what was transitory.
among whom the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that they would not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
So we urged Titus that, just as he had previously begun [it], thus he would also complete for you this [act of] grace.
But I am sending the brothers in order that our boasting about you would not prove to be empty in this case, so that you may be prepared just as I was saying,
lest somehow if Macedonians should come with me and find you unprepared, we--{not to speak of you}--would be humiliated in connection with this project.
Therefore I considered [it] necessary to urge the brothers that they should go on ahead to you and make arrangements in advance for your generous gift that was promised previously, so this would be prepared as a generous gift and not as grudgingly granted.
I wish that you would put up with me {in something a little foolish}--but indeed you are putting up with me.
What I am saying in this project of boasting, I am not saying as the Lord [would say], but as in foolishness.

Therefore [is] the law opposed to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given that was able to give life, certainly righteousness would have been from the law.
So where [is] your blessing? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have torn out your eyes [and] given [them] to me!
I wish that the ones who are disturbing you would also {castrate themselves}!
For indeed he was sick, coming near to death, but God had mercy on him and not [on] him only, but also [on] me, so that I would not have grief upon grief.
[so that] no one would be shaken by these afflictions. For [you] yourselves know that we are appointed for this,
