From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he would have to go to Jerusalem and suffer a great deal because of the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised.
"If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a large millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned at the bottom of the sea.
"When the first came, they thought they would receive more, but each received a denarius as well.
Then you say, "If we had been living in the days of our ancestors, we would have had no part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'
If those days hadn't been limited, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, those days will be limited.
But be sure of this: if the owner of the house had known when during the night the thief would be coming, he would have stayed awake and not allowed his house to be broken into.
Then you should've invested my money with the bankers. When I returned, I would've received my money back with interest.'
The Son of Man is going away, just as it has been written about him. How terrible it will be for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had never been born."
Don't you think that I could call on my Father, and he would send me more than twelve legions of angels now?

Peter, however, followed him at a distance as far as the high priest's courtyard. He went inside and sat down with the servants to see how this would end.

Jesus told his disciples to have a boat ready for him so that the crowd wouldn't crush him,
Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they would fall down in front of him and scream, "You are the Son of God!"
But Jesus wouldn't let him. Instead, he told him, "Go home to your family, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been to you."
Wherever he went, whether into villages, towns, or farms, people would place their sick in the marketplaces and beg him to let them touch even the tassel of his garment, and everyone who touched it was healed.
Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man would have to suffer a great deal and be rejected by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he would be killed, but after three days he would rise again.

At every festival, Pilate would release any one prisoner whom the people requested.

Now the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this and told himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who is touching him and what kind of woman she is. She's a sinner!"
because Jesus was in the process of ordering the unclean spirit to come out of the man. On many occasions the unclean spirit had seized the man, and though he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, he would break the chains and be driven by the demon into deserted places.
They had a glorified appearance, and were discussing Jesus' departure that he would shortly bring about in Jerusalem.
But the people would not welcome him, because he was determined to go to Jerusalem.

But be sure of this: if the homeowner had known at what time the thief were coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into.
Then he asked them, "If your son or ox falls into a well on the Sabbath day, you would pull him out immediately, wouldn't you?"
Then the host who invited both of you would come to you and say, "Give this person your place.' In disgrace, you would have to take the place of least honor.
Then he told the man who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, stop inviting only your friends, brothers, relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return and you would be repaid.
No one would give him anything, even though he would gladly have filled himself with the husks the pigs were eating.
"Then the older son became angry and wouldn't go into the house. So his father came out and began to plead with him.
"But the rich man replied, "No, father Abraham! But if someone from the dead went to them, they would repent.'
It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.
The Lord replied, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, "Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you!
"Suppose a man among you has a servant plowing or watching sheep. Would he say to him when he comes in from the field, "Come at once and have something to eat'?
Of course not. Instead, he would say to him, "Get dinner ready for me, and put on your apron and wait on me until I eat and drink. Then you can eat and drink.'
Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come. He answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with a visible display.
"But the tax collector stood at a distance and would not even look up to heaven. Instead, he continued to beat his chest and said, "O God, be merciful to me, the sinner that I am!'
As they were listening to this, Jesus went on to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem and because the people thought that the kingdom of God would appear immediately.
He replied, "I tell you, if they were quiet, the stones would cry out!"
So they watched him closely and sent spies who pretended to be honest men in order to trap him in what he would say. They wanted to hand him over to the jurisdiction of the governor,
Now during the day Jesus would teach in the Temple, but when evening came he would go out and spend the night on what is called the Mount of Olives.
And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the Temple.
But we kept hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel. What is more, this is now the third day since these things occurred.
so that everyone who believes in him would have eternal life.
"For this is how God loved the world: He gave his unique Son so that everyone who believes in him would not be lost but have eternal life.

Jesus answered, "If I were trying to glorify myself, my glory would mean nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, "He is our God.'
You don't know him, but I know him. If I were to say that I don't know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him and keep his word.
Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day, and he saw it and was glad."
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, since the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be thrown out of the synagogue.
Jesus told them, "If you were blind, you would not have any sin. But now that you insist, "We see,' your sin still exists."
Martha told Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet and told him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn't have died."

Jesus answered him, "Would you lay down your life for me? I tell you emphatically, a rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times."
