"What is Truth?" exclaimed Pilate. After saying this, he went out to the Jews again, and said: "For my part, I find nothing with which he can be charged.
upon which they all cried out again: not him, but Barabbas. now Barabbas was a robber.
Pilate again came outside, and said to the people: "Look! I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find nothing with which he can be charged."
When the Chief Priests and the police-officers saw him, they shouted: "Crucify him! Crucify him!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," said Pilate. "For my part, I find nothing with which he can be charged."
The Jews replied, "We have a law which requires that he ought to die because he claimed to be the Son of God."
When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat in a place called The Pavement, which in Hebrew is called Gabbatha.
It was the Sabbath even which falleth in the Easter feast, and about the sixth hour. And he said unto the Jews, "Behold your King."
upon which he delivered him up to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took Jesus and led him away.
and bearing his cross, he went forth to the place called Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha;
Pilate also had a notice written and fastened to the cross, which read: "Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews."
When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took His clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top.
they said therefore among themselves, let us not rent it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: so that the scripture was fulfilled, which said, "they parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots." this was what the soldiers actually did.
Then came the soldiers and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with Jesus.
For all this took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled which declares, "Not one of His bones shall be broken."
And there is another passage which says--'They will look upon him whom they pierced.'
After that, Joseph of Arimathaea, which was a disciple of Jesus - but secretly for fear of the Jews - besought Pilate that he might take down the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave him license.
And there came also Nicodemus which at the beginning came to Jesus by night, and brought of myrrh and aloes mingled together about a hundred pound weight.
and there was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one was yet laid;
and the handkerchief which was upon his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a distinct place by itself.
Then went in also that other disciple which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw and believed.
For they had not previously understood the Scripture which said that He must rise from the dead.
Jesus said,
Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!”
When therefore it was evening on that day, which was the first day of the week, and the doors shut where the disciples were, through fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and says to them, Peace be to you.
After which he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Master.
Upon saying this, Jesus breathed on the disciples and said to them, "[Be willing to] receive the Holy Spirit." [Note: This "breathing" served as a pledge of the Holy Spirit which actually came on these apostles a few weeks later. See Acts 1:5-8; 2:4].
Jesus perform'd many other miracles in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book.
There were together Simon Peter and Thomas, which is called Didymus: and Nathaniel of Cana a city of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of the disciples.
Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now taken.
This was now the third occasion on which Jesus showed himself to his disciples, after he had risen from the dead.
Now this he said, pointing out the sort of death by which he would give God glory. And after saying this, he said to him, Come after me.
Then Peter turning about, saw the favourite disciple of Jesus was behind; the same who leaned next to Jesus at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that is to betray you?
which occasion'd a flying rumour among the brethren, that John should not die: tho' Jesus had not said, he shall not die: but, if I will have him stay till I come, what have you to do with that?
The same disciple is he, which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things. And we know, that his testimony is true.
And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if they were written one by one, I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books
I composed the first discourse, O Theophilus, concerning all things which Jesus began both to do and to teach,
till the day in which, having given command, through the Holy Spirit, to the apostles whom he did choose out, he was taken up,
to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion, of which they had many proofs, during the forty days he appear'd to them, and inform'd them about the reign of the Messias:
And being assembled together with them, he commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, 'Ye did hear of me;
Once when they were with Him, they asked Him, "Master, is this the time at which you are about to restore the kingdom of Israel?"
and he said to them, it is not for you, to know the times or the seasons, which the father hath reserv'd in his own disposal.
but ye shall receive the influence of the holy spirit, which will descend upon you: and ye shall be witnesses for me, in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth.
who also said, Men of Galilee, why do ye stand looking into heaven? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, shall thus come in the manner in which ye have beheld him going into heaven.
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem—a Sabbath day’s journey away.
And when they had come in, they went up into an upper room, in which dwelt Peter and James, and John and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphasus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
And in those days Peter standing up in the midst of the brothers, said??he multitude together was about a hundred and twenty??16 Men and brothers, it was necessary that the Scripture should be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David, concerning Judas who became a guide to them that apprehended Jesus;
and said, men and brethren, the prediction which the holy ghost made, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who was guide to those that seiz'd Jesus, must have been accomplished.
(This man bought a piece of land with the money which he took for his treachery, and he fell there face downward and his body broke in two, and all his intestines poured out.
This incident became known to everyone who lived in Jerusalem so that the [burial] field purchased with the reward money became known as "Akeldama" [an Aramaic word] which means "Field of Blood.")
'It behoveth, therefore, of the men who did go with us during all the time in which the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us,
beginning from the baptism of John, unto the day in which he was received up from us, one of these to become with us a witness of his rising again.'
Then they prayed,
to receive the share of this ministration and apostleship, from which Judas, by transgression, did fall, to go on to his proper place;'
when all of a sudden there came a sound from heaven, like that of an impetuous wind, which filled all the house where they were.
And there appeared to them tongues like fire, which distributed them selves, and sat one on each of them.
And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, which were of all nations under heaven.
They wondered all, and marveled: saying among themselves, "Behold, are not all these which speak of Galilee?
and how do we hear, each in our proper dialect, in which we were born?
both Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya which adjoin Cyrene, and the Romans sojourning here, both Jews and proselytes,
Yet we all alike hear these Galilaeans speaking in our own language about the wonderful things which God has done."
'But this is that which hath been spoken through the prophet Joel:
ye men of Israel attend to what I say; Jesus of Nazareth was a man whom God distinguished among you, by miracles, by prodigies, and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as you your selves also know:
But being a prophet, and having in mind the oath which God had given to him, that of the fruit of his body one would take his place as a king,
'This Jesus did God raise up, of which we are all witnesses;
at the right hand then of God having been exalted -- also the promise of the Holy Spirit having received from the Father -- he was shedding forth this, which now ye see and hear;
and all the people were allarm'd at the many prodigies and miracles which were done by the apostles.
One day as Peter and John were going together to the temple, at the ninth hour, which was the hour of prayer,
And a certain man that was lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the door of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple;
Which same, when he saw Peter and John, that they would into the temple, desired to receive an alms;
at which he look'd very attentively, expecting to receive something of them.
Peter said, Silver and gold do not belong to me; but I give thee that which I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk about.
And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.
And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering.
which Peter observing, thus addressed them, ye men of Israel, why are ye so surprized at this event? or why do you look so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or piety, we had caus'd this man to walk?
and the Prince of the life ye did kill, whom God did raise out of the dead, of which we are witnesses;
And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
Repent ye, therefore, and turn: that your sins may be done away when the time of refreshing cometh, which we shall have of the presence of the Lord,
And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
Heaven must welcome
For Moses said, The Lord will give you a prophet from among your people, like me; you will give ear to everything which he will say to you.
And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.
which was attended by the high priest Annas, by Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all the members of the high priest's family.
This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people, and we must be saved by it.”
And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.
And when they had been made free, they came back to their friends, and gave an account of all the things which the chief priests and the authorities had said to them.
And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
which by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, 'Why did the heathen rage and the people imagine vain things?
To do that which had been fixed before by your hand and your purpose.
by displaying thine hand in miraculous cures, and prodigies, which by the name of thy holy child Jesus shall be done.
And they having prayed, the place was shaken in which they were gathered together, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and were speaking the word of God with freedom,
And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
Great was the power by which the apostles attested the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and they were all greatly favoured by the people.
And, in fact, there was not a needy man among them, for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the money which they realised,
which they laid down at the apostles feet: and they distributed it to every man as his occasions required.
Joseph, a Levite and a Cypriot by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas, which is translated Son of Encouragement,
