Josias the father of Jechonias and his brethren, about the time when the Jews were carried away to Babylon.
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah happened in this way. When his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, before they lived together she was discovered to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
But, when, these things, he had pondered, lo! a messenger of the Lord, by dream, appeared to him, saying, - Joseph, son of David! do not fear to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for, that which, in her, hath been begotten, is of the , Holy, Spirit.
Now all this happened to fulfill what was declared by the Lord through the prophet when he said,
“Behold, the
And Joseph, [when he] woke up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and he took his wife
Now, when, Jesus, was born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, lo! wise men from eastern parts, came into Jerusalem:
and asked, "Where is He that is born King of the Jews? We saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him."
And [when] King Herod heard [it], he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him,
So when he had gathered together all the chief priests and rabbis of the people, he began to inquire of them where the Christ was to be born.
Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men [and] determined precisely from them the time [when] the star appeared.
And he sent them to Bethlehem [and] said, "Go, inquire carefully concerning the child, and when you have found [him], report to me so that I also may come [and] worship him."
When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
Now [when they] saw the star, they rejoiced [with] very great joy.
And [when they] came into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down [and] worshiped him. And opening their treasure boxes, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Now, when they had retired, lo! a messenger of the Lord, appeareth by dream unto Joseph, saying, Arise, take unto thee the child and its mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there, until I tell thee, - for Herod is about to seek the child, to destroy it.
When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
He stayed there until Herod's death in order to fulfill what was declared by the Lord through the prophet when he said, "Out of Egypt I called my Son."
Then Herod, [when he] saw that he had been deceived by the wise men, became very angry, and he sent [soldiers] [and] executed all the children in Bethlehem and in all the region [around] it from [the age of] two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined precisely from the wise men.
Then what was declared by the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled when he said,
But, when Herod was, dead, lo! a messenger of the Lord, appeareth by dream unto Joseph in Egypt;
But [when he] heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream, he took refuge in the regions of Galilee.
He was the one the prophet Isaiah was referring to when he said, "He is a voice calling out in the wilderness: "Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!'"
But [when he] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
At this, he permitted him to be baptized. When Jesus had been baptized, he immediately came up out of the water. Suddenly, the heavens opened up for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him.
And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
Now [when he] heard that John {had been arrested}, he withdrew into Galilee.
in order to fulfill what was declared by the prophet Isaiah when he said,
And when he was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, whose other name was Peter, and Andrew, his brother, who were putting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
Going on from there he saw two other brothers James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee repairing their nets. When he called them,
Now [when he] saw the crowds, he went up the mountain and [after he] sat down, his disciples approached him.
"Those persons who feel grief [over their sins] are blessed because they will receive comfort [from God when they repent].
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute [you] and say all kinds of evil things against you, lying on account of me.
"Ye are the salt of the earth; but, if the salt become tasteless, with what shall it be salted? It is henceforth good for nothing, except, when cast without, to be trodden under foot by men.
and when men light a lamp, they do not put it under a bushel: but on the stand, to give light to all the family.
For it is true when I say, not one little letter or even a portion of a letter will be removed from the law of Moses until everything is accomplished [that is required by them]. [When that happens, then] heaven and earth will pass away [i.e., be destroyed. See II Peter 3:12].
"If therefore when you are offering your gift upon the altar, and there remember that your brother has a grievance against you,
Be ready to make friends with your opponent, even when you meet him on your way to the court; for fear that he should hand you over to the judge, and the judge to his officer, and you should be thrown into prison.
It is true when I say to you, you will not be released from there until you have paid the last coin. [Note: The coin mentioned here amounted to about ten minutes' worth of a farm laborer's pay, or a little over one dollar in 1994].
But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress, and whoever marries her when so divorced, commits adultery.
But you should just say 'yes' [when you mean] yes, and 'no' [when you mean] no. Whatever you say beyond these [i.e., enforcing them by oaths] is of the evil one [i.e., the devil].
And, when any one wants to go to law with you, to take your coat, let him have your cloak as well;
If anyone begs from you, give to him, and when anyone wants to borrow from you, do not turn away.
When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
But you, [when you] practice charitable giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets so that they should appear to men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render it to thee.
"But [when you] pray, do not babble repetitiously like the pagans, for they think that because of their many words they will be heard.
For if you forgive others when they offend you, your heavenly Father will forgive you too.
But if you do not forgive others when they offend you, your heavenly Father will not forgive you for your offenses.
And when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, downcast in countenance; for they disfigure their faces, so that they may appear fasting to men: verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
But [when] you are fasting, {put olive oil on your head} and wash your face
so that it will not be obvious to others when you are fasting, but only to your Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
Or how wilt thou say unto thy brother, Let me cast the mote out of thine eye, - when 1o! a beam, is in thine own eye?
"What man of you is there who, when his son asks a loaf, will give him a stone?
And it happened when Jesus finished these words the crowds were amazed at his teaching,
And [when] he came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him.
Now [when] he entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him, appealing to him
Now [when] Jesus heard [this], he was astonished, and said to those who were following [him], "Truly I say to you, I have found such great faith with no one in Israel.
And [when] Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying down and suffering with a fever.
Now [when it] was evening, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed, and he expelled the spirits with a word. And he healed all {those who were sick},
This was to fulfill what was declared by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "It was he who took our illnesses away and removed our diseases."
Now [when] Jesus saw many crowds around him, he gave orders to depart to the other side.
when a Scribe came up and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go!"
And, when he, entered, into a boat, his disciples followed him.
And [when] he came to the other side, to the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from among the tombs met him, very violent, so that no one was able to pass by along that road.
And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.
Now when those who had been taking care of the pigs ran away, they came into the city and reported everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men.
And behold, the whole town came out to meet Jesus, and [when they] saw him, they implored [him] that he would depart from their region.
And behold, they brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher, and [when] Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Have courage, child, your sins are forgiven."
When Jesus saw their reaction he said, "Why do you respond with evil in your hearts?
But [when] the crowds saw [this], they were afraid and glorified God who had given such authority to men.
And when Jesus was going from there, he saw a man whose name was Matthew, seated at the place where taxes were taken; and he said to him, Come after me. And he got up and went after him.
And, later on, when he was at table in the house, a number of tax-gatherers and outcasts came in and took their places at table with Jesus and his disciples.
And [when they] saw [it], the Pharisees began to say to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
And [when he] heard [it], he said, "Those who are healthy do not have need of a physician, but those {who are sick}.
And Jesus said to them, "{The bridegroom's attendants} are not able to mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them. But days are coming when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.
No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth onto an old garment; for what was intended to cover up [the hole] actually tears away [part of] the garment [i.e., when it shrinks], causing a bigger hole.
When a woman, who had been troubled with an hemorrhage twelve years, came behind him, and touch'd the hem of his garment.
When Jesus turned and saw her, he said, "Be courageous, daughter! Your faith has made you well." And from that very hour the woman was well.
And [when] Jesus came into the ruler's house and saw the flute players and the disorderly crowd,
But when the crowd had been sent out, he entered [and] took her hand, and the girl got up.
And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.
And [when he] came into the house, the blind men approached him, and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord."
But they, when they were gone out, spread his name abroad in all that land.
And when they were coming out, behold, they brought unto him a man, dumb, a demoniac.
and when he had driven out the demon, the dumb spoke. The crowds were amazed, saying, "Never was such a thing seen in Israel!"
And [when he] saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were weary and dejected, like sheep that did not have a shepherd.
And when he had called his twelve disciples to him, he gave them power over evil spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and infirmity.
These twelve Jesus sent out when he had charged them, saying, Go not off into the way of the nations, and into a city of Samaritans enter ye not;
And [when you] enter into the house, greet it.
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
It is true when I say to you, the districts around Sodom and Gomorrah [i.e., despite their gross sins] will be shown more leniency than that town on the day of judgment.
But when they deliver you up, be not careful how or what ye shall speak; for it shall be given to you in that hour what ye shall speak.
But when they persecute you in this city, flee to the other; for verily I say to you, Ye shall not have completed the cities of Israel until the Son of man be come.
And it happened that when Jesus had finished giving orders to his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and to preach in their towns.
