they decline to eat what comes from the market till they have washed it; and they have a number of other traditions to keep about washing cups and jugs and basins [and beds].)
then the Pharisees and the scribes ask him, Why do thy disciples not walk according to what has been delivered by the ancients, but eat the bread with defiled hands?
And He answered them, "Isaiah prophesied about you hypocrites very well when he wrote [Isa. 29:13], 'These people honor me with their lips [i.e., by what they say], but their heart is far from [honoring] me.
For, leaving the commandment of God, ye hold what is delivered by men to keep washings of vessels and cups, and many other such like things ye do.
And he said to them, Well do ye set aside the commandment of God, that ye may observe what is delivered by yourselves to keep.
but your doctrine is this, if any one shall tell his father or his mother, that what he could bestow for their relief, is corban, that is, to be given to the temple;
and so you set aside what God has said by what you have handed down. You have many other practices like these."
Then He called the crowd to Him again and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand [what I am saying].
there is nothing from without, that entring into a man can defile him: but that which originally proceeds from the man, is what defiles him.
When he had left the crowd and gone home, his disciples asked him what he meant by this figure.
and he said, are you likewise so void of understanding? don't you perceive that what passes from without into a man cannot defile him?
And he said, "What comes out of a person, that defiles a person.
all these vices come from within, and are what defile the man.
But she answered, "True, sir! and still the dogs under the table eat what the children leave!"
In those days, the multitude being very great, and not having what they might eat, Jesus having summoned his disciples, he says to them,
I feel compassion toward the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and do not have what they might eat.
And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large
And groaning in spirit, He says, What sign does this generation seek after? truly I say unto you, No sign shall be given unto this generation.
Jesus, being aware of what they were thinking, said, "Why are you reasoning about not having any bread? Have you not yet perceived or understood? Have your hearts become insensitive?
When I made a division of the five cakes of bread among the five thousand, what number of baskets full of broken bits did you take up? They said to him, Twelve.
And when the seven among the four thousand, what number of baskets full of broken bits did you take up? And they said to him, Seven.
Then again Jesus laid His hands on his eyes; and the man stared intently and [his sight] was [completely] restored, and he began to see everything clearly.
but Jesus return'd, and looking upon his disciples, he gave Peter this rebuke, be gone, thou adversary, your views are all worldly, regardless of what is divine.
What profit has a man if he gets all the world with the loss of his life?
And what would a man give in exchange for his life?
Because he was not certain what to say, for they were in great fear.
And as they descended from the mountain, he charged them that they should relate to no one what they had seen, unless when the Son of man should be risen from among the dead.
And they kept the saying, questioning among themselves what the coming back from the dead might be.
He said to them, "Elijah does come first, to restore all things; but what is written about the Son of man as well? This, that he is to endure great suffering and be rejected.
But I say to you, That also Elijah hath come, and they did to him what they willed, as it hath been written of him.'
And he said, What are you questioning them about?
Jesus said to him, provided you can believe, there is nothing but what may be effected for those that believe.
But they wist not what that saying meant, and were afraid to ask him.
And they came to Capernaum: and when he was in the house, he put the question to them, What were you talking about on the way?
Salt [is] good, but if the salt becomes deprived of its salt content, by what can you make it salty? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with one another."
And he said to them in answer, What did Moses say you were to do?
Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate."
And while he was going out into the way, a man came running to him, and went down on his knees, saying, Good Master, what have I to do so that I may have eternal life?
You have knowledge of what is said in the law, Do not put any one to death, Do not be untrue in married life, Do not take what is not yours, Do not give false witness, Do not get money by deceit, Give honour to your father and mother.
And Jesus looking at him, loved him, and said to him, One thing you lack; go and sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have a treasure in heaven; and come and take up your cross and follow me.
And Jesus looked round about, and said unto his disciples, "What a hard thing it is for them that have riches enter into the kingdom of God."
And His disciples were amazed at what He said. But Jesus spoke to them again and said, "How difficult it is [for anyone] to enter the kingdom of God
but Jesus casting his eye upon them, said, what is impossible to men, is not so to God; for to God all things are possible.
but shall receive at present in this age, what will be a hundred times better to him, than houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, tho' with persecution: and in the age to come eternal life.
And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going on before them; and they were amazed, and were afraid as they followed. And taking the twelve again to him, he began to tell them what was going to happen to him:
Once again, Jesus took the Twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to him. "Pay attention! We're going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the high priests and the scribes, and they'll condemn him to death. Then they'll hand him over to the unbelievers,
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him, and said, we desire you would grant us what we request.
And he said to them, What would you have me do for you?
But Jesus said to them, You have no knowledge of what you are saying. Are you able to take of my cup? or to undergo the baptism which I am to undergo?
They said to him, "Yes, we can." Jesus said to them, "Then you shall drink what I am drinking, and you shall undergo the baptism that I am undergoing;
And Jesus said to him, What would you have me do to you? And the blind man said, Master, make me able to see.
And some of those who were there said to them, What are you doing, taking the ass?
But they answered him exactly what Jesus had told them to say, so the people let them go.
So, addressing the tree, he exclaimed: "May no man ever again eat of your fruit!" And his disciples heard what he said.
And He remonstrated with them. "Is it not written," He said, "'My House shall be called The House of Prayer for all the nations?' But you have made it what it now is--a robbers' cave."
Then the high priests and the scribes heard of this, and they kept looking for some way to destroy Him, for they were afraid of Him, for everybody was swept off his feet at what He said.
And Peter, remembering what Jesus had said, says to him, Rabbi, see, the fig-tree which thou cursedst is dried up.
Truly I say to you, Whoever says to this mountain, Be taken up and be put into the sea; and has no doubt in his heart, but has faith that what he says will come about, he will have his desire.
Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
And they come again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders come to him and say to him, By what authority dost thou these things?
And they said to him, By what authority do you do these things? or who gave you authority to do these things?
And Jesus said to them, I will put to you one question; give me an answer, and I will say by what authority I do these things.
What about the baptism of John? Was it from heaven or from men?"
And they began to discuss [this] with one another, saying, "What should we say? If we say 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?'
And they said in answer to Jesus, We have no idea. And Jesus said to them, And I will not say to you by what authority I do these things.
What then will the master of the garden do? He will come and put the workmen to death, and will give the garden into the hands of others.
And they [i.e., the leading priests and experts in the Law of Moses] attempted to arrest Jesus, but [hesitated because] they feared what the crowd might do, for they understood that He was speaking the parable against them. So, they left Him and went away.
Then
And [when they] came, they said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and {you do not care what anyone thinks}, {because you do not regard the opinion of people} but teach the way of God in truth. Is it permitted to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?"
And Jesus answering said to them, Pay what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God. And they wondered at him.
Jesus said to them, "Is not this the reason that you are [so] mistaken, that you do not know [what] the Scriptures [teach] or [how much] power God has?
Then one of the scribes, on hearing them arguing, came up, and since he saw that Jesus had answered them properly, he asked Him, "What sort of command is the first of all commands?"
the Scribe replied, what you have said, master, is very true, there is one God, and no other but he.
Then David himself calleth him Lord, and by what means is he then his son?" And much people heard him gladly.
Because they all put in something out of what they had no need for; but she out of her need put in all she had, even all her living.
And when he was going out of the Temple, one of his disciples said to him, Master, see, what stones and what buildings!
Say when these things will be, and what will be the sign when these things are all about to be done.
And when you are taken and given up to be judged, do not be troubled about what to say: but whatever is given to you in that hour, say: because it is not you who say it, but the Holy Spirit.
"But when you see that disgusting thing that causes total destruction [i.e., the Roman army. See Luke 21:20] standing where it ought not to be [i.e., surrounding the besieged city of Jerusalem], (let the reader understand [what is meant by this]), then those of you in Judea are to run away into the [nearby] mountains.
"Now learn what the story of the fig tree means. Just as soon as its branches grow tender, and put forth leaves, you know that summer is near.
Watch ye therefore; for ye know not at what time the master of the house cometh, at evening, or midnight, or cock-crowing, or in the morning:
And what I say to you, I say to all, Keep watch.
But some of them were angry among themselves, saying, For what purpose has this oil been wasted?
but Jesus said, let her alone, why do you disquiet her? it is commendable, what she has done out of respect to me.
She has done what she was able: she has put oil on my body to make it ready for its last resting-place.
And truly I say to you, Wherever the good news goes out through all the earth, what this woman has done will be talked of in memory of her.
And hearing what he said, they were glad, and gave him their word to make him a payment of money. And he took thought how he might best give him up to them.
And they began to be grieved, and to say to him one by one, What, not I? and another, What, not I?
the son of man is going indeed, according to what is written of him: but wo to that man, by whom the son of man is betrayed: it would be better for that man, if he had never been born.
And he said, "Abba, Father, all [things] [are] possible for you! Take away this cup from me! Yet not what I will, but what you [will]."
And again he came [and] found them sleeping, {for they could not keep their eyes open}, and they did not know what to reply to him.
there were indeed several, who depos'd what was false against him: besides, what they deposed was insufficient.
And the high priest got up in the middle of them, and said to Jesus, Do you say nothing in answer? what is it which these say against you?
What is it which these witness against thee? But he held his peace and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him and said to him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
Jesus said, "I am. And, what is more, you will all see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven."
And the high priest, violently parting his robes, said, What more need have we of witnesses?
His words against God have come to your ears: what is your opinion? And they all said it was right for him to be put to death.
And some put shame on him and, covering his face, gave him blows and said to him, Now say what is to come: and the captains took him and gave him blows with their hands.
But he said, I have no knowledge of him, or of what you are saying: and he went out into the doorway; and there came the cry of a cock.
