For Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married.

John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife!”

because Herod was in awe of John and was protecting him, knowing he was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him he would be very disturbed, yet would hear him gladly.

Now an opportune time came on his birthday, when Herod gave a banquet for his nobles, military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee.

When Herodias’s own daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you.”

When his disciples heard about it, they came and removed his corpse and placed it in a tomb.

They hurried throughout that vicinity and began to carry the sick on mats to wherever they heard He was.

He answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written:

These people honor Me with their lips,
but their heart is far from Me.

For it doesn’t go into his heart but into the stomach and is eliminated.” (As a result, He made all foods clean.)

Then He commanded them: “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”

Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”

When the other 10 disciples heard this, they began to be indignant with James and John.

When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, “Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me!”

He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples heard it.

Then the chief priests and the scribes heard it and started looking for a way to destroy Him. For they were afraid of Him, because the whole crowd was astonished by His teaching.

I assure you: If anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.

One of the scribes approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked Him, “Which command is the most important of all?”

And when they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him silver. So he started looking for a good opportunity to betray Him.

“We heard Him say, ‘I will demolish this sanctuary made by human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’”

You have heard the blasphemy! What is your decision?”

And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.

When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “Look, He’s calling for Elijah!”

Yet, when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it.

Later, He appeared to the Eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table. He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who saw Him after He had been resurrected.

In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest of Abijah’s division named Zechariah. His wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

But the angel said to him:

Do not be afraid, Zechariah,
because your prayer has been heard.
Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son,
and you will name him John.

Then her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her His great mercy, and they rejoiced with her.

All who heard about him took it to heart, saying, “What then will this child become?” For, indeed, the Lord’s hand was with him.

and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on them.

The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard, just as they had been told.

And all those who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers.
