Reference: John, Epistles of
Hastings
The three Epistles known by this name have from the beginning been attributed to the Apostle John, and were admitted as canonical in the 3rd century. Some points of obvious similarity in style and diction indicate a connexion between them, but their internal character and the external evidence in their favour are so different that it will be convenient to deal with them separately.

And the city was filled with the confusion; and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus??acedonians??ellow-travelers of Paul.
And there accompanied him Sopater, son of Pyrrhus, a Beraean; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Galas of Derbe, and, Timothy; and, of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.
Gaius my host, and of the whole assembly, salutes you. Erastus, the treasurer of the city, salutes you, and Quartus the brother.
I am thankful that I immersed no one of you, except Crispus and Gaius;
Likewise, ye younger, be subject to the elder; yea, all of you gird on the lowly mind to serve one another; because "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the lowly."
And the God of all grace, Who called you into His everlasting glory in Christ, after ye have suffered a little while, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen, settle you.
The assembly in Babylon, elected with you, and Mark my son, salute you.
That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we gazed upon, and our hands handled, concerning the Word of Life
That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we gazed upon, and our hands handled, concerning the Word of Life
That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we gazed upon, and our hands handled, concerning the Word of Life (and the Life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you The Eternal Life; Who, indeed, was with the Father, and was manifested to us); read more. that which we have seen and heard we declare to you also, that ye also may have fellow-ship with us; and our fellowship also is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write, that your joy may be made full. And this is the message which we have heard from Him, and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and are walking in the darkness, we lie, and do not the truth; but, if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with One another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say, "We have no sin," we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say, "We have not sinned," we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
My little children, these things I write to you, that ye may not sin. And, if any one sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the Righteous. And He is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. read more. And in this we know that we have known Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, "I have known Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whosoever keeps His word, truly in him the love of God has been perfected: in this we know that we are in Him. He who says that he is abiding in Him ought himself also to walk even as He walked. Beloved, I write no new commandment to you, but and old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye heard. Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you; because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. He who says that he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in the darkness even until now. He that loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and knows not where he is going, because the darkness blinded his eyes. I write to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you for His name's sake. I write to you, fathers, because ye have known Him Who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because ye have conquered the evil one. I wrote to you, little children, because ye have known the Father. I wrote to you, fathers, because ye have known Him Who is from the beginning. I wrote to you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and ye have conquered the evil one. Love not the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him; because all that is in the world??he desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the vain-glory of life??s not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the desire thereof; but be that does the will of God abides forever. Little children, it is the last hour; and, as ye heard that Anti-Christ is coming, even now many anti-christs have arisen; whence we know that it is the last hour.
Little children, it is the last hour; and, as ye heard that Anti-Christ is coming, even now many anti-christs have arisen; whence we know that it is the last hour. They went out from among us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out, that they might be made manifest, that they are not all of us. read more. And ye have an anointing from the Holy One, and ye all know Him. I did not write to you because ye know not the truth; but because ye know it, and because no falsehood is of the truth. Who is the liar, but he that denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the Anti-Christ, he that denies the Father and the Son. Every one who denies the Son has not the Father either; he who confesses the Son has the Father also.
Every one who denies the Son has not the Father either; he who confesses the Son has the Father also. As for you, let that which ye heard from the beginning abide in you. If that which ye heard from the beginning abide in you, ye also shall abide in the Son and in the Father. read more. And this is the promise which He Himself promised us, the eternal life. These things I wrote to you concerning those who would deceive you. And the Anointing which ye received from Him abideth in you, and ye have no need that anyone teach you; but as His Anointing teacheth you concerning all things, and is true, and is no lie, and even as He taught you, ye abide in Him. And now, little children, abide in Him; that, if He shall be manifested, we may have confidence, and not be put away from Him with shame at His coming. If ye know that He is righteous, ye know that every one that does righteousness has been begotten of Him.
Behold what manner of love the Father hath given to us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. For this cause the world knows us not, because it knew Him not. Beloved, now are we children of God, and never yet was it manifested what we shall be. We know that, if He shall be manifested, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is. read more. And every one that has this hope on Him purifies himself, even as He is pure. Every one who commits sin commits lawlessness also; and sin is lawlessness. And ye know that He was manifested, that He might take away sins; and in Him is no sin. Every one that is abiding in Him sins not; whosoever sins has not seen Him nor known Him. Little children, let no one deceive you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous. He that commits sin is of the Devil; because the Devil sins from the beginning. To this end was the Son of God manifested, that He might destroy the works of the Devil.
He that commits sin is of the Devil; because the Devil sins from the beginning. To this end was the Son of God manifested, that He might destroy the works of the Devil. Whosoever has been begotten of God sins not; because His seed abides in him, and he cannot sin because he has been begotten of God. read more. In this are manifest the children of God and the children of the Devil: every one that does not righteousness is not of God, neither he that does not love his brother; because this is the message which ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another; not as Cain who was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And wherefore did he slay him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. Marvel not, brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He that loves not abides in death. Every one that hates his brother is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. In this we have known the love, that He laid down His soul in our behalf; and we ought to lay down our souls in behalf of the brethren. But whosoever possesses the goods of the world, and beholds his brother having need, and shuts up his compassion from him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue, but in deed and in truth. Hereby we shall know that we are of the truth, and we shall assure our heart before Him; because, if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have confidence toward God; and whatsoever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments, and do the things that are pleasing before Him. And this is the commandment, that we should believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He gave us commandment. And he that keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him; and in this we know that He abideth in us, by the Spirit Whom He gave to us.
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone forth into the world. In this ye know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ hath come in flesh is of God; read more. and every spirit that confesses not Jesus is not of God; and this is the spirit of the Anti-Christ, of which ye have heard that it is coming, and now it is in the world already.
and every spirit that confesses not Jesus is not of God; and this is the spirit of the Anti-Christ, of which ye have heard that it is coming, and now it is in the world already. Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He Who is in you, than he that is in the world. read more. They are of the world; for this cause they speak of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God; he that knows God hears us; he that is not of God hears us not: from this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. Beloved, let us love one another; because love is of God, and every one that loves has been begotten of God, and knows God. He that loves not never knew God; because God is love.
He that loves not never knew God; because God is love. In this was manifested the love of God in us, that God hath sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we may live through Him. read more. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son, to be a propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever beheld God. If we love one another, God abideth in us, and His love has been perfected in us. In this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He hath given us of His Spirit. And we have beheld, and testify, that the Father hath sent the Son, as Savior of the world. Whosoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abideth in Him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love which God hath in us. God is love, and he that abides in love abides in God, and God abideth in him. In this has love been made perfect with us, that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, even so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment; and he who fears is not made perfect in love. We love, because He first loved us. If anyone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he that loves not his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God Whom he has not seen.
If anyone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he that loves not his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God Whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from Him, that he who loves God loves his brother also.
Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been begotten of God; and every one who loves Him Who begat loves him also that has been begotten of Him.
Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been begotten of God; and every one who loves Him Who begat loves him also that has been begotten of Him. In this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and do His commandments. read more. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome; because all that has been begotten of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith. And who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is He Who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ; not in the water only, but in the water and in the blood. And the Spirit is He Who beareth witness, because the Spirit is the Truth:
And the Spirit is He Who beareth witness, because the Spirit is the Truth: because there are Three Who bear witness; the Spirit, and the water, and the blood; and the Three agree in one.
because there are Three Who bear witness; the Spirit, and the water, and the blood; and the Three agree in one. If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; because this is the testimony of God, that He hath testified concerning His Son. read more. He that believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself; he that believes not God has made Him a liar; because he has not believed in the testimony that God testified concerning His Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that has the Son has the life; he that has not the Son of God has not the life. These things I wrote to you who believe on the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life. And this is the confidence which we have toward Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us; and, if we know that He heareth us whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we asked of Him. If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life for those that sin not to death. There is a sin to death: I do not say that he shall make request concerning this. All unrighteousness is sin; and there is a sin not to death. We know that every one who has been begotten of God sins not; but he who was begotten of God keeps himself, and the evil one touches him not. We know that we are of God, and the whole world is lying in the evil one. And we know that the Son of God hath come, and hath given us understanding, that we may know the True One: and we are in the True One??n His Son Jesus Christ. This is the True God, and eternal life. Little children, guard yourselves from idols.
Because many deceivers went out into the world, who confess not Jesus Christ as coming in flesh. This is the deceiver and the Anti-Christ.
If anyone comes to you, and brings not this teaching, receive him not into your house, and say not to him, "Greeting,"
