Who will give me as the months of old, as the days God will watch me?

when Shaddai[was] still with me, my children [were] all around me,

Chiefs held back in words, and they will put the hand to the mouth.

When they heard me, they blessed me,
and when they saw me, they spoke well of me.

The praise of him perishing will come upon me, and I shall cause the heart of the widow to rejoice.

I put on justice and it will clothe me: my judgment as an upper garment and a turban.

"And I thought, 'I will pass away in my nest, and like the phoenix I shall multiply [my] days.

To me they heard, and they waited, and they will be silent for them at my counsel.

If I had spoken, they would have it none other ways, my words were so well taken among them.

When I laughed, they knew well it was not earnest; and this testimony of my countenance pleased them nothing at all.

Of what use is the strength of their hands to me? all force is gone from them.

Between the shrubs they will bray; they will be poured out under the thorn bush.

If I went with vanity, and my foot will haste upon deceit;

(Let me be weighed in an even balance, and +God will take knowledge of my blamelessness;)

If my going will incline from the way, and my heart went after mine eyes, and a blemish did cleave upon my hands:

I will sow and another shall eat; and my offspring shall be rooted up.

For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

What then will I do when God comes as my judge? and what answer may I give to his questions?

if he did not bless me
while warming himself with the fleece from my sheep,

For I have ever feared the vengeance and punishment of God, and knew very well that I was not able to bear his burden.

And my heart will be seduced in secret, and my hand shall kiss to my mouth:


“I assure you, the men of my tent have said,
‘Who can find one [in need] who has not been satisfied with his meat’?

then let me tremble before a great multitude, and be terrified by the scorn of families; and I will be silent and not go out the door.

If only God would give ear to me, and the Ruler of all would give me an answer! or if what he has against me had been put in writing!

If not, I shall lift it up upon my shoulder, I will bind it a crown to me

I would give Him an account of all my steps;
I would approach Him like a prince.

"If my land were to cry out against me or if all its furrows wept as one,

And these three men will cease from answering Job, for he is just in his eyes.

And the anger of Elihu will kindle, son of Barachel the Buzite, from the family of Ram: against Job was, his anger kindled, for his justifying his soul above God.

And against his three friends was his anger kindled, because they, found not an answer, and they will condemn Job.

Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were all older than he.

And Elihu will see that not an Answer in the mouth of the three men, and his anger will kindle,

So Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite replied:

I am young in years,
while you are old;
therefore I was timid and afraid
to tell you what I know.


“You see, I waited for your words,
I listened to your [wise] reasons,
While you pondered and searched out what to say.

Indeed, I paid close attention to you all, but none of you were able to refute Job or answer his arguments convincingly.

That ye may not say, We have found out wisdom; God will make him yield, not man.

Now he hath not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches.

And am I to go on waiting while they have nothing to say? while they keep quiet and give no more answers?

Lo! my bosom, is like wine not opened, Like new wine-skins, it will burst.

I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer.

Let me not, I pray you, respect any man's person; Neither will I give flattering titles unto any man.

For I knew not, shall I flatter; for a little while, he making me will take me away.

I am going to open my mouth;
my tongue will form words on my palate.

I speak from the innocence of my heart; and my lips will utter what I sincerely know.

Look, dread of me should not terrify you, and my hand will not be heavy upon you.

Surely thou spakest in mine ear and I will hear the voice of thy words.

Behold, he will find enmity against me, and he will reckon me for an enemy to him.

Wherefore against Him hast thou striven, When for all His matters He answereth not?


“For God speaks once,
And even twice, yet no one notices it [including you, Job].


“In a dream, a vision of the night [one may hear God’s voice],
When deep sleep falls on men
While slumbering upon the bed,

Then he will uncover the ear of men, and will seal in their instruction,

To turn a son of earth from his deed, while yet, pride, from man he concealeth:
