"How often do the wicked have their lights put out? Does calamity ever fall on them? Will God in his anger ever apportion their destruction?

And though God save their children from such sorrow, yet will he so reward themselves, that they shall know it.

Let his eyes see his trouble, and let him be full of the wrath of the Ruler of all!

What will they care for their household after them, when the number of his months comes to an end?"

"Can God learn anything? After all, he will judge even the exalted ones.

One comes to his end in complete well-being, full of peace and quiet:

His body is well fed,
and his bones are full of marrow.

While another dies with a bitter soul,
Never even tasting anything good.

They will lie down together upon the dust, and the worm shall cover over them.

Behold, I knew your purposes, and the devices ye will shake off against me.

For ye will say, Where the house of the noble one; and where the tent of the dwellings of the unjust?

Ask any man that goeth by the way, and - if ye will not regard their tokens and deeds - he shall tell you,

That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they will be brought forth to the day of wrath.

Who will make his way clear to his face? and if he has done a thing, who gives him punishment for it?

Yet he will be borne to the grave. Men shall keep watch over the tomb.

The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, And all men shall draw after him, As there were innumerable before him.

So how will you comfort me [with] emptiness, when fraud is left [in] your answers?"

And Eliphaz the Temanite will answer and say,

Is it of any interest to the Ruler of all that you are upright? or is it of use to him that your ways are without sin?

Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?

Surely then hast been wont to put thy brother in pledge, for nothing, and, the garments of the ill-clad, hast thou stripped off:

while the land belonged to a powerful man
and an influential man lived on it.

Thou didst send away widows empty, and the arms of the orphans will be broken.

Therefore trapping nets [are] all around you, and panic suddenly terrifies you,

And thou sayest, What doth God know? will he judge through the dark cloud?

Clouds a covering to him, and he will not see; and he will go about the circle of the heavens.


“Will you keep to the ancient path
That wicked men walked [in the time of Noah],

Who were laid hold of, and no time a river will pour out their foundation?

Who said to God, Go away from us; and, What is the Ruler of all able to do to us?

"Though God fills their houses with good things, the counsel of the wicked will remain far from me.

The righteous will see this and rejoice; the innocent will insult him, saying,

"Our enemies are sure to be destroyed, and fire will burn up what's left of their riches."


“Now yield and submit yourself to Him [agree with God and be conformed to His will] and be at peace;
In this way [you will prosper and great] good will come to you.


“If you return to the Almighty [and submit and humble yourself before Him], you will be built up [and restored];
If you remove unrighteousness far from your tents,

And the Almighty will be thy treasure, And precious silver unto thee.


Then you will have delight in the Almighty,
And you will lift up your face to God.

When they cast thee down, thou shalt say, There is lifting up; And the humble person he will save.

He will deliver even him that is not innocent: Yea, he shall be delivered through the cleanness of thy hands.

Who will give, I knew to find him: I will come even to his place.

I will arrange judgment before him, and I will fill the mouth with proofs.

I shall know the words he will answer me, and I shall understand what he will say to me.

Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.

In that place, the upright can reason with him; and I'll be acquitted once and for all by my judge."

The left hand in his working, and I shall not behold: he will cover himself on the right hand, and I shall not see.

My foot doth keep his path; his highway have I holden, and will not go out of it.

For he will perform what is appointed for me; and many such things are with him.

For God has made my heart feeble, and my mind is troubled before the Ruler of all.

Why are times not stored up by the Ruler of all, and why do those who have knowledge of him not see his days?

Behold, wild asses in the desert will go forth in their work, seeking for prey: the sterile region bread for him, and for the young.

In the field they will harvest his meslin, and they will glean the vintage of the unjust one.

They lie all night naked without clothing, And have no covering in the cold.

So that when the showers in the mountains have rained upon them, and they be all wet, they have none other succour, but to embrace the rock for want of a covering.

They go about naked, without clothing, and go hungry while they carry the sheaves.

"The whole city crieth unto the LORD with sighing, the souls of the slain make their complaint: But God destroyeth them not for all this,

The murderer will rise by light; he will kill the poor and needy; and in the night he will be as a thief.

And [the] eye of [the] adulterer waits for dusk, saying, {'No eye will see me,'} and he places a covering [on his] face.

In the night season they search the houses, and hide themselves in the daytime, but will not know the light.

For the morning is to all of them as thick darkness; For they know the terrors of the thick darkness.

"They remain only a short time on the water's surface; their inheritance will be cursed in the land; no one will work in their vineyards.

The drought as well as the heat carry away the melted snow; so the grave takes away those who have sinned.

The womb will forget them. Maggots will find them to be a delicacy! They won't be remembered anymore, their iniquity will be cut to pieces like firewood.

He preys on the barren and childless woman, and does not treat the widow well.

And he drew the mighty in his power: he will rise up and none shall be sure in living.

God may let them rest in a feeling of security, but he is constantly watching all their ways.

They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.

And if it be not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?

And Bildad the Shuhite will answer and say,

whose men of war are innumerable, and whose light ariseth over all.

And Job will answer and say,

Who helped you say all of this? Who inspired you?"

The departed spirits tremble
beneath the waters and all that inhabit them.

yea, and all they which dwell beneath in the hell are not hid from him, and the very destruction itself cannot be kept out of his sight.


“He wraps the waters in His clouds [which otherwise would spill on earth all at once],
And the cloud does not burst under them.

See, these are only the outskirts of his ways; and how small is that which comes to our ears about him! But the thunder of his acts of power is outside all knowledge.

And Job will add to take up his parable, and say,

By the life of God, who has taken away my right; and of the Ruler of all, who has made my soul bitter;

I will teach you by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.

This is the punishment of the evil-doer from God, and the heritage given to the cruel by the Ruler of all.


“Though his children are many, they are destined for the sword;
And his descendants will not have sufficient bread.


“Those who survive him will be buried because of the plague,
And [their] widows will not be able to weep.


He may prepare it, but the just will wear it
And the innocent will divide the silver.
