[Jer. 31:15], "A voice was heard in [the town of] Ramah [Note: This was a village near Jerusalem, where Rachel was buried], with crying and deep mourning. It was Rachel crying for her children [Note: Initially this was a reference to the Israelites who were taken to Babylonian captivity. See Jer. 29-31]. She refused to be comforted because they were dead."
And when Jesus heard this, He was amazed and said to those who were following [along], "It is true when I tell to you, I have never found [anyone with] such great faith, not [even] among the Israelites.
When they persecute you in one town, run to the next one, for it is true when I tell you, you will not have traveled through [all] the towns of the Israelites until the Son of man comes [i.e., in His kingdom].
He answered them, "I was sent only to the straying sheep of the Israelites."
so that the crowd marveled when they saw deaf-mutes talking, injured people healed, crippled people walking and blind people seeing. And they honored the God of the Israelites [for such great miracles].
In that way the words spoken by the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled: "They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one whose price had been fixed by some Israelites,
And Jesus answered, "The foremost one is this [Deut. 6:4-5], 'Hear this, you Israelites, the Lord our God is the only Lord,
And he will influence many Israelites to turn to the Lord their God.
(As He said to our forefathers), He has helped His servants, the Israelites, [showing] that He remembered to be merciful
"May the Lord be praised, [who is] the God of the Israelites, for He has come to [the aid of] His people and bought them back [i.e., from bondage].
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in wilderness: till the day came, when he should show himself unto the Israelites.
Now there was a righteous and devoted man named Simeon at Jerusalem, who was expecting the consolation of the Israelites [i.e., the coming of the Messiah to save them], and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
[to be] a light for revealing [God's way of salvation] to the [unconverted] Gentiles, and a [source of] glory to your people, the Israelites."
Then Simeon [asked God to] bless them and said to Jesus' mother Mary, "Look, many Israelites will be caused to fall [i.e., into spiritual ruin] or rise [i.e., to spiritual renewal] because of Him. And [He will be] a 'sign' [for people] to speak against,
And when Jesus heard these things, He was amazed and said to the crowd that was following Him, "I tell you, I have never found [anyone with] such great faith, not [even] among the Israelites."
But we had hoped that he was the one who would purchase the Israelites back [from their bondage]. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
[Then] He came to His own [world, while on earth], but His own [people, the Israelites] did not welcome Him.
And I would not have recognized Him, but I came immersing people in water so that He would become known to the Israelites."
Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of the Israelites and [yet] you do not understand these things?
Now it was almost time for the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles [Note: This was also called "Festival of Shelters," and was one of three principal, annual Jewish festivals and commemorated the occasion of the Israelites living in tents or shelters during their forty year wandering in the desert].
'Men, Israelites! hear these words, Jesus the Nazarene, a man approved of God among you by mighty works, and wonders, and signs, that God did through him in the midst of you, according as also ye yourselves have known;
and Peter having seen, answered unto the people, 'Men, Israelites! why wonder ye at this? or on us why look ye so earnestly, as if by our own power or piety we have made him to walk?
And they obeyed, and about daybreak went into the Temple and began to teach. The high priest and his party came over and called together the council and indeed the whole senate of the Israelites, and sent to the prison to have the apostles brought in.
and said unto them, 'Men, Israelites, take heed to yourselves about these men, what ye are about to do,
But God gave him no inheritance [here at that time], no, not even a place [of his own] to stand on. Yet God promised that He would [someday] give it to him and to his descendants after him [i.e., the Israelites], as a [permanent] possession, even though [at that time] he had no child yet.
But when he was about forty years old he felt led to visit his relatives, the Israelites [i.e., called Hebrews at that time].
"This is the Moses who had said to the Israelites [Deut. 18:15], 'God will raise up a prophet from among your countrymen who will be like me [in some ways].'
But God turned [away from them] and allowed them to worship heavenly bodies [i.e., stars], just as it was written in the prophet [Amos 5:25ff], 'Did you offer me slain animals as sacrifices for forty years in the wilderness, you Israelites?
But the Lord replied to him, "Go on your way, for Saul is someone I have especially chosen to carry my name to the [unconverted] Gentiles, kings and the Israelites.
He sent His message [first] to the Israelites; [it involved] preaching the good news through Jesus Christ (who is Lord of all).
And Paul having risen, and having beckoned with the hand, said, 'Men, Israelites, and those fearing God, hearken:
And then He destroyed seven nations in the country of Canaan and gave the Israelites the land as an inheritance for about four hundred and fifty years.
crying out - Israelites! be giving help! This, is the man who, against the people, and the law, and this place, is teaching, all men everywhere; furthermore, even Greeks, hath he brought into the temple, and hath profaned this holy place.
It was for this reason that I requested to see you and talk with you, for I am wearing this chain because of the hope held by the Israelites."
For I could pray to be accursed from Christ on behalf of my brethren, my human kinsfolk--for such the Israelites are.
Who, indeed, are Israelites, whose are the sonship, and the glory, and the covenants, and the legislation, and the divine service, and the promises,
I speak not these things as though the words of God had taken none effect. For they are not all Israelites which came of Israel;
And Isaiah declares about [the nation of] Israel [Isa. 10:22-23], "[Even] if the number of Israelites were [as many] as the grains of sand in the ocean, [still only] a small minority will be saved.
But the Israelites, who were attempting to become right with God by [conformity to] the law of Moses, never achieved [this righteousness] by that law.
Brothers and sisters, my heart's desire and prayer to God on behalf of my fellow Israelites is for their salvation.
But not everyone [of the Israelites] obeyed [that] good news. For Isaiah said [Isa. 53:1], "Lord, who has believed our message?"
But I ask [again], "Did not the Israelites understand [the message]?" In the first place, Moses said [Deut. 32:21], "I [i.e., God] will stir up you [Jews] to become jealous, by [favoring] a nation [i.e., the Gentiles] that is unworthy [of your approval]. [I will do it] by using a nation of fools to make you people angry."
But Isaiah said about the Israelites [Isa. 40:2], "I reached out all day long to [help] people who disobeyed and spoke against [me]."
[I Kings 19:10], "Lord, they [i.e., the Israelites] have killed your prophets and have destroyed your altars; I am the only one left and they are trying to kill me, too."
What then? [Just this]: The very thing that the Israelites are looking for [i.e., a right relationship with God], they have not found. But God's selected ones obtained [this right relationship with Him] and the rest [of the Israelites] were made insensitive to God's call,
I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall in utter ruin, did they? Of course not! On the contrary, because of their stumbling, salvation has come to heathen peoples, to make the Israelites jealous.
For I want you to know this secret, brothers, so you will not become conceited: Part of the Israelites have become [spiritually] insensitive [to God], [and will remain that way] until the fullness of the Gentiles occurs. [Note: As with verse 12, concerning the Jews, "fullness" here may mean either a large or the complete number of Gentiles who will be saved].
And so [i.e., in this way] all the Israelites will be saved. [Note: The "all" here is thought by many to refer to a large number of the physical Jews who will be saved, not necessarily to every single individual Jew]. Even as it is written [Isa. 59:20-21], "The Deliverer [i.e., Christ] will come from Zion [i.e., the city of Jerusalem, or from the nation of Israel]. He will take away the wickedness from Jacob [i.e., the Jews]."
For I want you to be [fully] aware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and all of them passed [safely] through the [Red] Sea. [Note: This refers to God guiding the Israelites through the desert during the daytime by a cloud moving along above them . See Ex. 13:21-22].
[So], do not worship idols as some of them did, as it is written [Ex. 32:6], "The people sat down to feast and drink, then got up and played." [Note: This refers to the Israelites engaging in an orgy of dancing and sex. See Ex. 32:17-19].
Look at the Israelites in their practices. Are not those who eat the sacrifices in spiritual fellowship with the altar?
It is written in the law [Isa. 28:11f], "I [i.e., God] will speak to these people [i.e., the Israelites] by men with foreign languages and through the lips of strangers, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord."
Now if the old religious service which resulted in death, although its law was carved in letters of stone, was introduced with a splendor so great that the Israelites could not keep their eyes fixed on Moses' face because of the splendor that was fading from it,
not as Moses did, who used to wear a veil over his face, to keep the Israelites from gazing at the end of what was passing away.
But the minds of the Israelites became dull for, to this very day, the same veil remains on them [i.e., figuratively] when the Old Agreement [Scriptures] are read. It is not being revealed to them that the Old Agreement is being abolished by Christ [i.e., by His death on the cross. See Col. 2:14].
Hebrews, are they? I also, Israelites, are they? I also, seed of Abraham, are they? I also,
This set of circumstances contains an illustration; for these two women [Hagar and Sarah] represent the two Agreements [between God and mankind]. The one [Agreement], given at Mount Sinai, represents Hagar, whose children became [the Israelites], enslaved under bondage [to the requirements of the law of Moses].
[I was] circumcised eight days after I was born; [I am] from the nation of Israelites; from the tribe of Benjamin and of Hebrew ancestry [i.e., an outstanding Hebrew]. As far as the law of Moses is concerned, [I am] a Pharisee [i.e., a strict sect of the Jewish religion].
He was faithful to God who appointed Him, just as Moses was [also] faithful in [serving] God's household [i.e., the Israelites].
Now Moses was a faithful servant among all of [those belonging to] God's household [i.e., the Israelites], as [one who gave] testimony about the things which [were to be] spoken [by him],
For indeed we have had the good news [of salvation] preached to us, just as the Israelites also [when the good news of the promised land came to them]; but the message they heard did not benefit them, because it was not united with faith [in God] by those who heard.
For if Joshua had given the Israelites rest, God would not have spoken about another day later on [i.e., "Today" in Psa. 95:7].
So, we should do our best to enter into that state of rest, so that no one fails [to do so] by following the same example of disobedience [i.e., as seen in the Israelites. See verses 2, 6].
For indeed, the descendants of Levi, who are appointed to the priesthood, are commanded by the law of Moses to collect a tenth [of the income] of the Israelites, who are their brothers, even though these brothers are [also] descendants of Abraham.
And in the one case, men here [on earth, that is, the Levites] who die, collect a tenth [from the rest of the Israelites], but there [i.e., in the case of Melchizedek] it is collected by someone about whom it is declared [by Scripture] that he continues to live.
And, so to speak, Levi, who collected a tenth [from the Israelites], paid a tenth through Abraham,

"But I have a few things against you because you have people there [in the church] who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumblingblock in front of the Israelites, [causing them] to eat food sacrificed to idols and to be sexually immoral [See Num. 23-24].
Then I heard the number of those who were sealed. [It was] one hundred forty-four thousand [in all] from every tribe of the Israelites [Note: This could refer to Christians of Jewish descent].
It had a very high wall [around it], with twelve angels [stationed] at its twelve gates. The names written on the gates were those of the twelve tribes of the Israelites.

And Moses made outcry unto Yahweh saying, What am I to do, with this people? Yet a little, and they will stone me. Then said Yahweh unto Moses - Pass over before the people, and take with thee some of the elders of Israel, - thy staff also wherewith thou didst smite the river, take thou in thy hand, so shalt thou go thy way. Behold me! standing before thee, there upon the rock in Horeb, then shalt thou smite the rock and there shall come forth therefrom water, and the people shall drink. And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. So he called the name of the place, Massah, and Meribah, - because of the fault-finding of the sons of Israel, and because of their putting Yahweh to the proof, saying, Is Yahweh in our midst or is he not?
They put GOD to the proof in their heart, By asking food to their mind: Yea they spake against Elohim, - They said, Can GOD prepare a table in the desert? Lo! he hath smitten a rock, And waters, have gushed out, Yea, torrents, have rushed along, - Food also, can he give? Or provide flesh for his people?

And thy dead body shall become food for every bird of the heavens, and for the beast of the earth, - with none to fright them away. Yahweh, will smite thee, with the burning sores of Egypt and with the hemorrhoids, and with scab, and with itch, - of which thou canst not be healed. Yahweh, will smite thee, with madness and with blindness, - and with terror of heart; and thou shalt he groping about in noonday brightness, as the blind man gropeth in thick darkness, and thou shalt not make thy ways prosper, - but shalt be only oppressed and spoiled all the days with none to save. A wife, shalt thou betroth, and, another man shall lie with her. A house, shalt thou build, and shalt not dwell therein, - A vineyard, shalt thou plant, and shalt not throw it open; Thine ox slaughtered before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof, Thine ass stolen from before thee, and shall not be restored to thee, - Thy flock given to thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to save. Thy sons and thy daughters given to another people, thine eyes looking on, and failing for them all the day, thine own hand being powerless. The fruit of thy soil, and all thy toilsome produce, shall a people whom thou knowest not, eat up, - and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed, all the days; so that thou shalt be mad, - for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. Yahweh, will smite thee, with a grievous boil, upon the knees and upon the legs, of which thou canst not he healed, - from the sole of thy foot even unto the crown of thy head. Yahweh will bring thee and thy king whom thou wilt set up over thee, unto a nation which thou hast not known, thou nor thy fathers, - and thou shalt serve there other gods of wood and of stone. Thus shalt thou become a horror, a byword, and a mockery, among all the peoples whither Yahweh thy God will drive thee. Much seed, shalt thou take out into the field, - and little, shalt thou gather in, for the locust shall consume it. Vineyards, shalt thou plant, and dress, - but wine, shalt thou not drink, neither shalt thou gather the grapes, for the worm shall eat them. Olive trees, shalt thou have in all thy bounds, - but with oil, shalt thou not anoint thyself, for thine olives, shall drop off. Sons and daughters, shalt thou beget, and they shall not be thine, for they shall go into captivity. All thy trees, and the fruit of thy ground, shall the grasshopper, devour. The sojourner who is in thy midst, shall mount up above thee higher and higher, - whereas, thou, shalt come down lower and lower: he, shall lend to thee, but, thou, shalt not lend to him, - he, shall become head, and, thou, shalt become tail. Moreover, all these curses, shall come in upon thee, and pursue thee and overtake thee, until thou be destroyed, - because thou didst not hearken unto the voice of Yahweh thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he hath commanded thee; and they shall be upon thee, for a sign, and for a wonder, and upon thy seed, unto times age-abiding. Because thou servedst not Yahweh thy God, with rejoicing, and with gladness of heart, for abundance of all things, therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies, whom Yahweh will send against thee, with hunger and with thirst and with nakedness, and with want of all things, - and he, will put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he hath destroyed thee. Yahweh will bring against thee a nation from afar, from the end of the earth, as darteth a bird of prey, - a nation whose tongue thou canst not understand; a nation of fierce countenance, - who wilt not respect an elder nor to the young, show favour; then shall be eat the young of thy cattle and the fruit of thy ground until thou art destroyed, who will not leave for thee corn, new wine or oil, the young of thy kine, or the ewes of thy flock, - until he hath caused thee to perish. And he shall lay siege to thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fortified walls come down wherein thou wast trusting, in all thy land, - yea he will lay siege to thee in all thy gates, in all thy land which Yahweh thy God, hath given, unto thee. And thou wilt eat the fruit of thy body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, whom Yahweh thy God hath given unto thee - in the siege and in the straitness wherewith thine enemy will straiten thee. The man that is tender among you, and exceedingly delicate, his eye will be jealous of his brother and of the wife of his bosom, and of the remnant of his sons, whom be might leave behind; so that he will not give to any one of them, of the flesh of his sons which he will eat, because he hath nothing at all left him, - in the siege and in the straitness wherewith thine enemy will straiten thee within all thy gates. The tender and delicate woman among you who hath never adventured the sole of her foot to set it upon the ground, through delicateness and through tenderness, her eye shall be jealous of the husband of her bosom, and of her own son, and of her own daughter; both as to her afterbirth that cometh forth from between her feet and as to her children which she shall bear, for she will eat them for want of all things secretly, - in the siege and in the straitness wherewith thine enemy will straiten thee within thine own gates. If thou wilt not take heed to do all the words of this law, which are written in this scroll, - to revere this glorious and reverend name, Yahweh thy God, then will Yahweh make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, - plagues great and lasting, and diseases grievous and lasting; and he will bring back on thee all the sickness of Egypt, because of which thou wast afraid, - and they shall cleave unto thee; even every disease and, every plague, which are not written in this scroll of the law, will Yahweh bring up against thee, until thou art destroyed, And ye shall be left men few in number, whereas ye had become as the stars of the heavens for multitude, - because thou hast not hearkened unto the voice of Yahweh thy God. And it shall come to pass that as Yahweh rejoiced over you to do you good and to multiply you, so, will Yahweh rejoice over you, to cause you to perish and to destroy you, - and ye shall be torn away, from off the soil, whither thou art going in to possess it; and Yahweh will scatter thee among all the peoples, from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth, - and thou wilt serve there other gods whom thou hast not known - thou nor thy fathers, - of wood and of stone. And among those nations, shalt thou find no ease, neither shall there be a place of rest for the sole of thy foot, - but Yahweh will give unto thee there a trembling heart, and a failing of eyes and faintness of soul. And thy life will be hung up for thee in front, - and thou wilt be in dread by night and by day, and wilt not trust in thy life. In the morning, thou wilt say - Oh that it were evening! and in the evening, thou wilt say - Oh that it were morning! because of the dread of thy heart which thou wilt dread, and because of the sight of thine eyes which thou wilt see. And Yahweh will take thee back again to Egypt in ships, by the way whereof I said unto thee, Thou shalt not again any more see it. And ye will offer yourselves there for sale unto thine enemies as servants and as handmaids with no one to buy.
none of you, shall enter into the land, as to which I uplifted my hand to give you an abode therein, - save Caleb son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun: whereas, your little ones, of whom ye said, they should become, a prey, I will bring them in, and they shall acknowledge the land which ye refused. But, your own dead bodies, shall fall in this desert; and your sons, shall be shepherds in the desert forty years, and shall bear your unchastities, - until your dead bodies are consumed in the desert. By the number of the days wherein ye spied out the land - forty days, each day for a year, shall they bear your iniquities - forty years, - so shall ye know my opposition. I - Yahweh, have spoken, Verily this, will I do to all this evil assembly, who have conspired against me, - In this desert, shall they be consumed And there, shall they die. Now as for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, - who returned and caused all the assembly to murmur against him by giving out rumour against the land, they died - the men who gave out an evil rumor of the land, - by the plague, before Yahweh. But, Joshua son of Nun, and Caleb son of Jephunneh! remained alive - of those men who went to spy out the land. And Moses spake these words unto all the sons of Israel, and the people were greatly depressed. So they arose early in the morning, and went up into the top of the mountain, saying, - We are here - therefore will we go up into the place as to which Yahweh hath said that we have sinned. But Moses said, Wherefore is it that, ye, are going beyond the bidding of Yahweh, - since that cannot prosper? Do not go up, For Yahweh is not in your midst, - Lest ye be smitten down before your enemies. For, the Amalekites and the Canaanites, are there before you, So shall ye fall by the sword, - For inasmuch as ye have turned back from following Yahweh, Therefore will Yahweh not be with you. But they presumptuously ascended into the top of the mountain, - though, neither, the ark of the covenant of Yahweh nor Mosses moved out of the midst of the camp. So ten the Amalekites and the Canaanites, that dwelt in that mountain, came down, - and smote them and routed them even unto Hormah.

Now, the manna, was like coriander seed, and the appearance thereof like the appearance of bdellium, The people used to go about and pick it up, and grind it with a pair of mill-stones, or pound it in a mortar, and boil it in a pot, and make it into round cakes, - then was the taste thereof like the taste of a sweet cake made with oil. When the dew came down upon the camp by night, the manna came down thereupon. So then Moses heard the people weeping by their families, every one at the entrance of his tent, - then kindled the anger of Yahweh fiercely, and in the eyes of Moses, it was grievous.

Unable, am, I, by myself, to carry all this people, - for they are too heavy for me. But if, in this way, thou art going to deal with me, slay me, I beseech thee, slay, if I have found favour in thine eyes, - and let me not see my grief, Then said Yahweh unto Moses - Gather thou unto me seventy men, from among the elders of Israel, of whom thou knowest that they are elders of the people and their overseers, - then shalt thou take them unto the tent of meeting, and they shall station themselves there with thee. Then will I come down, and speak with thee there, and will take of the spirit that is upon thee and put upon them, - and they shall carry, with thee, the burden of the people, and, thou, shalt not carry it by thyself. And, unto the people, shalt thou say: Hallow yourselves by to-morrow, and ye shall eat flesh, for ye have wept in the ears of Yahweh saying - Who will grant us to eat flesh? for it was well with us in Egypt, - so then Yahweh will give you flesh and ye shall eat. Not one day, shall ye eat nor two days, - nor five days nor ten days, nor twenty days: for a month of days until it cometh forth out of your nostrils, so shall it become to you a loathsome thing, - because ye have refused Yahweh who is in your midst, and have wept before him, saying, Wherefore now came we forth out of Egypt? And Moses said, Six hundred thousand footmen, are the people in whose midst am, I, yet thou hast said - Flesh, will I give unto them, a and they shall eat for a month of days. Shall the flocks and herds, be slaughtered for them, that it may suffice for them? Shall all the fishes of the sea, be gathered together unto them that it may suffice for them? Then said Yahweh unto Moses, Shall the hand of Yahweh, fail? Now, shalt thou see whether my word come to pass unto thee or not. And Moses went forth and spake unto the people the words of Yahweh, - and gathered together seventy men from among the elders of the people, and caused them to stand round about the tent. Then Yahweh came down, in the cloud, and spake unto him, and took e of the spirit that was upon him, and gave unto the seventy men - the elders. And it came to pass that when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and then did so no more. Now there were two men left behind in the camp - the name of the one, was Eldad and the name of the other, Medad, so then the spirit, rested on them - they, being among them who were written, though they hint not gone forth unto the tent, - but they prophesied in the camp. And there ran a young man, and told Moses and said, - Eldad and Medad, are prophesying in the camp! Then responded Joshua son of Nun the attendant of Moses from his youth, and said, - My lord Moses forbid them! But Moses said unto him, Art, thou, jealous for, me? Oh would that, all the people of Yahweh, were prophets! Yea let Yahweh put his spirit upon them! Then was Moses received back into the camp, - he and the elders of Israel. Now, a wind, had sprung up, from Yahweh, and cut off quails from the sea, and let them lie over the camp - as it were a days journey here and a days journey there, round about the amp, - and as it were two cubits on the face of the land. And the people rose up all that day and all the night and all the next day, and gathered the quails, he that did least, gathered ten homers, - and they spread them out for themselves spreading away, round about the camp. The flesh, was yet between their teeth, not yet chewed, - when the anger of Yahweh, had kindled upon the people, and Yahweh smote the people, with an exceeding great plague. And the name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah - because there, they buried the people who had lusted, From Kibroth-hattaavah, the people set forward to Hazeroth, - and they remained in Hazeroth.

and ten princes with him, one prince of an ancestral house for each of the tribes of Israel, - they being, severally heads of their ancestral houses, among the thousands of Israel. Too little for us, was the iniquity of Peor, from which we have not cleansed ourselves, unto this day, - although the plague came upon the assembly of Yahweh; but that, ye, must turn back to-day from following Yahweh, - though it must needs be that, if, ye, rebel to-day against Yahweh, then, to-morrow, with all the assembly of Israel, will he be wroth? Howbeit, if, unclean, be the land of your possession, do ye on your part come over into the land of the possession of Yahweh, where abideth the habitation of Yahweh, and take your possession in our midst, - but, against Yahweh, do not rebel, nor, against us, rebel, by building yourselves an altar apart from the altar of Yahweh our God. Did not, Achan son of Zerah, commit an act of treachery, with a devoted thing, and, upon all the assembly of Israel, came wrath, - so that not, he - one man alone, died in his iniquity.

And the sons of Israel said unto Yahweh - We have sinned, do, thou, with us, according to all that is fitting in thine eyes, - only rescue us, we beseech thee this day. And they put away the gods of the stranger out of their midst, and served Yahweh, - and his soul was impatient of the misery of Israel.
So they gathered themselves unto Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before Yahweh, and fasted on that day, and said, there, We have sinned against Yahweh. And Samuel judged the sons of Israel in Mizpah.

And they entered into a covenant, to seek Yahweh, God of their fathers, - with all their heart, and with all their soul; and, whosoever would not seek unto Yahweh God of Israel, should be put to death, - whether small or great, whether man or woman. So they bound themselves by oath unto Yahweh, with a loud voice, and with shouting, - and with trumpets and with horns. And all Judah rejoiced over the oath, for, with all their heart, had they sworn, and, with all their good will, had they sought him, and he was found of them, - and Yahweh gave them rest round about.

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt spake unto them, - but suffered the male children to live. Then called the king of Egypt for the midwives, and said to them - Wherefore have ye done this thing, that ye should let the male children live? And the midwives said unto Pharaoh. Because not like the Egyptian women, are the Hebrew women, for they are full of life, ere yes the midwife can come in unto them, they have given birth, So then God dealt well with the midwives, - and the people multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty. And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made for them households. Then gave Pharaoh command to all his people saying - Every son that is born to the Hebrews, into the river, shall ye cast him; But every daughter, shall ye suffer to live.
Then went forth the taskmasters of the people and their overseers, and spake unto the people, - saying, - Thus, saith Pharaoh, I am not going to give you straw, Ye yourselves go fetch you straw, of any ye can find, - yet hath there not been diminished from your service a single thing. So the people dispersed themselves throughout all the land of Egypt, - to gather stubble for straw: the taskmasters, meanwhile, being urgent saying, - Complete your works, The task of a day, in its day, as when the straw was provided. Then were beaten the overseers of the sons of Israel, whom the taskmasters of Pharaoh had set over them saying: Wherefore have ye not completed your task for making bricks, as heretofore, so also, yesterday and, to-day?
