Who devour the houses of widows, and, for a show, are a long time at prayer. These, shall receive, a heavier sentence.

And he looked up, and saw the rich men that were casting their gifts into the treasury.

And He saw a certain poor widow throwing two small copper coins into it [Note: These two coins amounted to about ten minutes of a farm laborer's pay, or about one dollar in 1994].

So, He said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has thrown in more than all the rest [i.e., referring to the many rich people who were also throwing in money].

As some were talking about the temple, that it was decorated with beautiful stones and consecrated offerings [of magnificent gifts of gold which were displayed on the walls and hung in the porticoes], He said,

As to these things which ye are beholding, days are coming in which there shall not be left stone upon stone which shall not be thrown down.

And they asked him, saying, Teacher, when therefore shall these things be? and what'shall be the sign when these things are about to come to pass?

He said, “Be careful and see to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name [appropriating for themselves the name Messiah which belongs to Me alone], saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near!’ Do not follow them.

And when news of wars and troubled times comes to your ears, have no fear; for these things have to be, but the end will not be now.

Then Jesus said to His disciples, "Nations will wage war against one another and kingdoms will attack one another.

You will be the objects of universal hatred because you are called by my name;

And when ye shall see Jerusalem surrounded with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh: then let them that are in Judea flee to the mountains,

Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled (completed).

When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.

In the same way also, when you see these things happening [i.e., the above mentioned "signs"], you can know that the kingdom of God [i.e., either its heavenly phase or the destruction of Jerusalem] is near.

Most certainly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things are accomplished.

For so it will come on all those who are living on the face of all the earth.

and all the people were coming early unto him in the temple to hear him.

He accepted their offer, and then looked out for an opportunity to betray Him when the people were not there.

Jesus sent forward Peter and John, saying to them: "Go and make preparations for our eating the Passover."

And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.

Then he will show you a large upstairs room, furnished [with carpets and dining couches]; prepare the meal there.”

And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant [ratified] in My blood.

And they were wondering among themselves which of them it was who would do this thing.

"Simon, Simon [i.e., Peter], Satan has earnestly requested the right to sift you like wheat. [Note: Grain was sifted by using a sieve-like device in which grain and particles of dirt and straw were shaken together, allowing the grain to fall through while the dirt and straw remained. This was an allusion to the agitating trials Peter was soon to endure, and survive].

And He said to them, “When I sent you out without a money belt and [provision] bag and [extra] sandals, did you lack anything?” They answered, “Nothing.”

And he said to them, But now, he who has a money-bag, or a bag for food, let him take it: and he who has not, let him give his coat for money and get a sword.

For I tell you that this [passage of Scripture], which was written about me, must be fulfilled [Isa. 53:12]: 'And He [i.e., Jesus] was counted with [i.e., as though He were one of] the criminals.' For the part [of that passage] that refers to me is being fulfilled."

Then he went out, and retired as usual to the mountain of olives, where his disciples followed him.

And he was withdrawn from them, as it were a stone's cast, and having fallen on the knees he was praying,

And, getting up from prayer, he came to the disciples, and saw that they were sleeping for sorrow.

and he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up [and] pray that you will not enter into temptation!"

When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?

And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.

A little later someone else saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

And one hour, as it were, having intervened, a certain other was confidently affirming, saying, 'Of a truth this one also was with him, for he is also a Galilean;'

But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

and having blindfolded him, they were striking him on the face, and were questioning him, saying, 'Prophesy who he is who smote thee?'

And they were saying many other [things] against him, reviling [him].

And when it was day, the elderhood of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, were gathered together, and led him into their council, saying,

And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ a king.

Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this Man.”

And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.

When Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly pleased. He had wanted to see Him for a long time because of what he had heard about Him, and was hoping to see some [miraculous] sign [even something spectacular] done by Him.
