and not as domineering over those in your charge but proving yourselves models for the flock to imitate;

In everything you yourself continue to set them a worthy example of doing good; be sincere and serious in your teaching, let your message be wholesome and unobjectionable, so that our opponent may be put to shame at having nothing evil to say about us.

and keep your conscience clear, so that those who bitterly abuse your excellent conduct as Christians may be ashamed of slandering you.

by keeping your hold on faith and a good conscience; for some have thrust the latter aside and so have made shipwreck of their faith.

Keep on living upright lives among the heathen, so that, when they slander you as evildoers, by what they see of your good deeds they may come to praise God on the judgment day.

So faith by itself, if it has no deeds to back it up, is dead. But someone may say, "You have faith, and I have good deeds. Show me your faith without any good deeds, but I will show you mine by my good deeds."

"You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its strength, what can make it salt again? It is good for nothing but to be thrown away and trodden under foot.

You must keep on having salt within you, and keep on living in peace with one another."

(1:7) For the message of the Lord has rung out from you, not only in Macedonia and Greece, but everywhere the report of your faith in God has been told, so that we need never mention it.

Continue charging the rich of this world to stop being haughty and not to fix their hope on a thing so uncertain as riches, but on God who richly and ceaselessly provides us with everything for our enjoyment; charge them to continue doing good and being rich in good deeds, open-handed and generous hearted,

Our people too must set examples of doing good, so as to meet the necessary demands and not to live unfruitful lives.

But in your case, my dearly loved friends, even though we speak in such a tone, we are sure of better things, yea, things that point to salvation. For God is not so unjust as to forget the work you have done and the love you have shown His name in the service you have rendered for your fellow-Christians, and still are doing.

For we must all appear before the judgment-bar of Christ, that each may get his pay for what he has done, whether it be good or bad.

Then He told them this story: "A man had a fig tree planted by his vineyard, and he kept going and looking for figs on it, but did not find any. So he said to the vine-dresser, 'Look here! for three years I have been coming to look for figs on this fig tree, and have not found any. Cut it down. Why waste the ground with it?' But he answered, 'Leave it, sir, just one more year, till I dig around it and manure it. read more.

Good deeds, too, are usually very evident, and if they are not, they cannot be completely concealed.

By your continuously bearing abundant fruit and in this way proving yourselves to be real disciples of mine, my Father is glorified.

But the man who looks at the flawless law that makes men free, and keeps on looking, proving himself to be, not a forgetful hearer but an actual doer of what it requires, will be blessed in what he does.
