He entered the Temple; and while He was teaching, the High Priests and the Elders of the people came to Him and asked Him, "By what authority are you doing these things? and who gave you this authority?"

"And I also have a question to ask *you*," replied Jesus, "and if you answer me, I in turn will tell you by what authority I do these things.

So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." "Nor do I tell you," He replied, "by what authority I do these things."

Again he sent another party of servants more numerous than the first; and these they treated in the same manner.

"Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you pay the tithe on mint, dill, and cumin, while you have neglected the weightier requirements of the Law--just judgement, mercy, and faithful dealing. These things you ought to have done, and yet you ought not to have left the others undone.

I tell you in solemn truth that all these things will come upon the present generation.

"You see all these?" He replied; "in solemn truth I tell you that there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be pulled down."

I tell you in solemn truth that the present generation will certainly not pass away without all these things having first taken place.

"But the King will answer them, "'In solemn truth I tell you that in so far as you rendered such services to one of the humblest of these my brethren, you rendered them to myself.'

When Jesus had ended all these discourses, He said to His disciples,

Then the High Priest stood up and asked Him, "Have you no answer to make? What is it these men are saying in evidence against you?"
