When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to Him, requesting Him to come and save the life of his slave.

This report about Him went throughout Judea and all the vicinity.

Then John’s disciples told him about all these things. So John summoned two of his disciples

After John’s messengers left, He began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?

Look, I am sending My messenger
ahead of You;
he will prepare Your way before You.

because he had an only daughter about 12 years old, and she was at death’s door.

While He was going, the crowds were nearly crushing Him.

Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was going on. He was perplexed, because some said that John had been raised from the dead,

“I beheaded John,” Herod said, “but who is this I hear such things about?” And he wanted to see Him.

When the crowds found out, they followed Him. He welcomed them, spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and cured those who needed healing.

(For about 5,000 men were there.)

Then He told His disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about 50 each.”

About eight days after these words, He took along Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray.

They appeared in glory and were speaking of His death, which He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.

“Let these words sink in: The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”

But they did not understand this statement; it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.

Then an argument started among them about who would be the greatest of them.

When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose Him fiercely and to cross-examine Him about many things;

At that time, some people came and reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.

So he called the manager in and asked, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you can no longer be my manager.’

Then He took the Twelve aside and told them, “Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that is written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.

So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since He was about to pass that way.

Moses even indicated in the passage about the burning bush that the dead are raised, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.

As some were talking about the temple complex, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, He said,

“Teacher,” they asked Him, “so when will these things be? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”

For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in Me: And He was counted among the outlaws. Yes, what is written about Me is coming to its fulfillment.”

About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with Him, since he’s also a Galilean.”

But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see Him because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by Him.

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three,

It was preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.

Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

But we were hoping that He was the One who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it’s the third day since these things happened.
