The Christian doctrine of the Holy Spirit arises out of the experience of the Church, as it Interprets, and is itself interpreted by, the promise of the Comforter given by Jesus to His disciples (Joh 14; 15; 16). This appeal to experience follows the method adopted by St. Peter in his Pentecostal sermon (Ac 2:33). The teaching may briefly be stated as follows: The Holy Spirit is God; a Person within the Godhead; the Third Person, the knowledge of whom depends on the revelation of the Father and the Son, from both of whom He proceeds. He was in the world, and spoke by the prophets before the Word became flesh, and was Himself the agent in that creative act. Through Him the atonement was consummated. He is the life-giving presence within the universal Church, the Divine agent in its sacramental and authoritative acts; communicating Himself as a presence and power to the individual Christian; mediating to him forgiveness and new birth; nourishing, increasing, and purifying his whole personality; knitting him into the fellowship of saints; and finally, through the resurrection of the body, bringing him to the fulness of eternal life. The purpose of this article is to justify this teaching from Scripture.

And to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for profiting. For to one, indeed, is given through the Spirit a word of wisdom; and to another, a word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; read more. to another, faith, in the same Spirit; and to another, gifts of healings, in the one Spirit;
to another, faith, in the same Spirit; and to another, gifts of healings, in the one Spirit; and to another, workings of mighty deeds; and to another, prophecy; and to another, discerning of spirits; to another, various kinds of tongues; and to another, interpretation of tongues.
and to another, workings of mighty deeds; and to another, prophecy; and to another, discerning of spirits; to another, various kinds of tongues; and to another, interpretation of tongues.
for, indeed, in one Spirit were we all immersed into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit.
for, indeed, in one Spirit were we all immersed into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit. For the body also is not one member, but many. read more. If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body"; it is not, therefore, not of the body. And, if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body"; it is not, therefore, not of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole body were hearing, where were the smelling? But, as it is, God did set the members, each one of them in the body, even as He willed. And, if they were all one member, where were the body? But now they are many members, but one body.
but our comely parts have no need. But God attempered the body, giving the more abundant honor to that which lacked;
And God, indeed, set some in the assembly: first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; after that, miracles; then, gifts of healings, helps, governments, various kinds of tongues.
And God, indeed, set some in the assembly: first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; after that, miracles; then, gifts of healings, helps, governments, various kinds of tongues.
And God, indeed, set some in the assembly: first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; after that, miracles; then, gifts of healings, helps, governments, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? read more. Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But desire earnestly the greater gifts; and a still more excellent way I show you.
But desire earnestly the greater gifts; and a still more excellent way I show you.

But desire earnestly the greater gifts; and a still more excellent way I show you.
And, if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all the mysteries and all knowledge; and, if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing,
But now abides faith, hope, love; these three; and the greatest of these is love.
Pursue love; and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
Pursue love; and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
Pursue love; and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speaks in a tongue speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands; but in the spirit he speaks mysteries. read more. But he that prophesies speaks to men to edification and exhortation and comfort. He that speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the assembly. Now I wish you all to speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy; and greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interpret, that the assembly may receive edifying. And now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you, either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophesying, or in teaching? Even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, if they give no distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? For even if a trumpet give an uncertain sound, who will prepare for war? So also ye, unless through the tongue ye give intelligible speech, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air! There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and no one of them is without signification. If, then, I know not the meaning of the voice, I will be to him who is speaking a barbarian; and he that is speaking, a barbarian to me. So also ye, since ye are eager for spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound in them with a view to the edification of the assembly.
So also ye, since ye are eager for spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound in them with a view to the edification of the assembly. Wherefore, let him that speaks in a tongue, pray that he may interpret. read more. For, if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it, then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Else, if you are blessing with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the "Amen" at your giving of thanks, since he knows not what you say? For you, verily, give thanks well, but the other is not edified. I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all; but in an assembly I prefer to speak five words with my understanding, that I may instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
And spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;
Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

But, when Cephas came to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was blameworthy; for, before certain ones came from James, he was eating with the gentiles; but, when they came, he was withdrawing and separating himself, fearing those of the circumcision.

Behold, I, Paul, say to you, that, if ye be circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing.
For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.

"I am the Alpha and the Omega," saith the Lord God, Who is, and Who was, and Who is coming, the Almighty. I, John, your brother, and fellow-sharer in the tribulation, and kingdom, and patience in Jesus, was in the island called Patmos, because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day; and I heard behind me a great voice as of a trumpet, saying, "What you see, write in a book, and send it to the seven assemblies; to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamum, and to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea." And I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me; and, having turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; and, in the midst of the candlesticks, One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girded at the breasts with a golden girdle. And His head and hair were white as white wool, as snow; and His eyes were as a flame of fire; and His feet like burnished brass, as if glowing in a furnace; and His voice as the voice of many waters; and having in His right hand seven stars; and a sharp, two-edged sword proceeding out of His mouth; and His countenance was as the sun shining in his power. And, when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead! And He laid His right hand on me, saying, "Fear not; I am the First and the Last,
And, when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead! And He laid His right hand on me, saying, "Fear not; I am the First and the Last, and the Living One; and I was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore; and I have the keys of death and of Hades.
