When He had said these things, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

As they were untying the young donkey, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the donkey?”

“The Lord needs it,” they said.

and He said, “It is written, My house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves!”

and said to Him: “Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Who is it who gave You this authority?”

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

“Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What should I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.’

“But when the tenant farmers saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said, ‘This is the heir. Let’s kill him, so the inheritance will be ours!’

He will come and destroy those farmers and give the vineyard to others.”

But when they heard this they said, “No—never!”

But He looked at them and said, “Then what is the meaning of this Scripture:

They watched closely and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, so they could catch Him in what He said, to hand Him over to the governor’s rule and authority.

“Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?”

“Caesar’s,” they said.

They were not able to catch Him in what He said in public, and being amazed at His answer, they became silent.

In the same way He also took the cup after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant established by My blood; it is shed for you.

But He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles dominate them, and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’

He also said to them, “When I sent you out without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?”

“Not a thing,” they said.

Then He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn’t have a sword should sell his robe and buy one.

“Lord,” they said, “look, here are two swords.”

“Enough of that!” He told them.

Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal?

When a servant saw him sitting in the firelight, and looked closely at him, she said, “This man was with Him too.”

After a little while, someone else saw him and said, “You’re one of them too!”

“Man, I am not!” Peter said.

But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”

They all asked, “Are You, then, the Son of God?”

And He said to them, “You say that I am.”

“Why do we need any more testimony,” they said, “since we’ve heard it ourselves from His mouth?”

So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

He answered him, “You have said it.”

and said to them, “You have brought me this man as one who subverts the people. But in fact, after examining Him in your presence, I have found no grounds to charge this man with those things you accuse Him of.

A third time he said to them, “Why? What has this man done wrong? I have found in Him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have Him whipped and then release Him.”

But turning to them, Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and your children.

“What things?” He asked them.

So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a Prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,

and when they didn’t find His body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.

Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn’t see Him.”

So they said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts ablaze within us while He was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us?”

who said, “The Lord has certainly been raised, and has appeared to Simon!”

And as they were saying these things, He Himself stood among them. He said to them, “Peace to you!”

Having said this, He showed them His hands and feet.

He also said to them, “This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,
