The Christian doctrine of the Holy Spirit arises out of the experience of the Church, as it Interprets, and is itself interpreted by, the promise of the Comforter given by Jesus to His disciples (Joh 14; 15; 16). This appeal to experience follows the method adopted by St. Peter in his Pentecostal sermon (Ac 2:33). The teaching may briefly be stated as follows: The Holy Spirit is God; a Person within the Godhead; the Third Person, the knowledge of whom depends on the revelation of the Father and the Son, from both of whom He proceeds. He was in the world, and spoke by the prophets before the Word became flesh, and was Himself the agent in that creative act. Through Him the atonement was consummated. He is the life-giving presence within the universal Church, the Divine agent in its sacramental and authoritative acts; communicating Himself as a presence and power to the individual Christian; mediating to him forgiveness and new birth; nourishing, increasing, and purifying his whole personality; knitting him into the fellowship of saints; and finally, through the resurrection of the body, bringing him to the fulness of eternal life. The purpose of this article is to justify this teaching from Scripture.

When this was noised about, the multitude came together and were astonished, because that every man heard them speak his own tongue.

They were all amazed, and wondered: saying one to another, "What meaneth this?" Others mocked them saying, "They are full of new wine."
but this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel, 'It shall be in the last days, saith God, of my spirit I will pour out upon all flesh. And your sons, and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions. And your old men shall dream dreams. read more. And on my servants, and on my handmaidens I will pour out of my spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.
Since now that he by the righthand of God exalted is, and hath received of the father the promise of the holy ghost, he hath shed forth that which ye now see and hear.

Peter said unto them, "Repent, and be baptised every one of of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the holy ghost.

and had favour with all the people, and the Lord added to the congregation daily such as should be saved.
Then said Peter, "Silver and gold have I none: such as I have, give I thee. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up. And immediately his feet and anklebones received strength,
So that thou stretch forth thine hand, that healing, and signs, and wonders be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus."
Then said Peter, "Ananias how is it that Satan hath filled thine heart, that thou shouldest lie unto the holy ghost, and keep away part of the price of the livelihood:

This is he that was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. This man received the word of life to give unto us,
But as soon as they believed Philip's preaching of the kingdom of God and of the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised: both men and women.
When the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard say that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: which, when they were come, prayed for them, that they might receive the holy ghost. read more. When Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands on them, the holy ghost was given: he offered them money, saying, "Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I put the hands, he may receive the holy ghost." read more. Then said Peter unto him, "Thy money perish with thee, because thou wenest that the gift of God may be obtained with money. Thou hast neither part nor fellowship in this business. For thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent, therefore, of this thy wickedness, and pray God that the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art full of bitter gall, and wrapped in iniquity." Then answered Simon, and said, "Pray ye to the Lord for me that none of these things which ye have spoken fall on me."
And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in unto him; And putting his hands on him, that he might receive his sight."
Ananias went his way and entered into the house and put his hands on him and said, "Brother Saul, the Lord that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight and be filled with the holy ghost."
Ananias went his way and entered into the house and put his hands on him and said, "Brother Saul, the Lord that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight and be filled with the holy ghost." And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales and he received his sight, and arose and was baptised.
For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
And I said, 'God forbid Lord, for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.' But the voice answered me again from heaven, 'Count not thou those things common, which God hath cleansed.' read more. And this was done three times. And all were taken up again into heaven. And behold immediately were there three men come unto the house where I was, sent from Cesarea unto me.
And behold immediately were there three men come unto the house where I was, sent from Cesarea unto me.
And as I began to preach, the holy ghost fell on them, as he did on us at the beginning.
In those days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the spirit, that there should be great dearth throughout all the world, which came to pass in the Emperor Claudius' days.
There were at Antioch, in the congregation, certain prophets and teachers: as Barnabas and Symeon called Niger; And Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, Herod the tetrarch's nurse-fellow, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord and fasted; The holy ghost said, "Separate me Barnabas and Saul, for the work whereunto I have called them." read more. Then fasted they and prayed, and put their hands on them, and let them go.
For it seemed good to the holy ghost and to us, to put no grievous thing to you more than these necessary things,
they came to Mysia, and sought to go into Bithynia, but the spirit suffered them not.
they came to Mysia, and sought to go into Bithynia, but the spirit suffered them not.
When they heard that, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. And Paul laid his hands upon them: and the holy ghost came on them, and they spake with tongues and prophesied;
And Paul laid his hands upon them: and the holy ghost came on them, and they spake with tongues and prophesied;

The same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. And as we tarried there a good many days, there came a certain prophet from Jewry, named Agabus. read more. When he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his hands and feet and said, "Thus saith the holy ghost, 'So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the gentiles.'"
And it fortuned that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever, and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in and prayed, and laid his hands on him and healed him.
and declared to be the son of God with power of the holy ghost, that sanctifieth, since the time that Jesus Christ our Lord rose again from death:
Surely, very much. First: unto them was committed the word of God.
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by the means of sin; And so death went over all men, insomuch that all men sinned. For even unto the time of the law was sin in the world: but sin was not regarded, as long as there was no law: read more. Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them also that sinned not, with like transgression as did Adam: which is the similitude of him that is to come. But the gift is not like as the sin. For if, through the sin of one, many be dead: much more plenteous, upon many, was the grace of God and gift by grace: which grace was given by one man, Jesus Christ. And the gift is not over one sin, as death came through one sin of one that sinned. For damnation came of one sin unto condemnation: But the gift came to justify from many sins. For if by the sin of one, death reigned by the means of one, much more shall they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life by the means of one; that is to say, Jesus Christ. Likewise, then, as by the sin of one, condemnation came on all men: even so, by the justifying of one cometh the righteousness that bringeth life, upon all men. For as by one man's disobedience many became sinners: so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. But the law, in the meantime, entered in that sin should increase. Neverthelater, where abundance of sin was, there was more plenteousness of grace. That as sin had reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life, by the help of Jesus Christ.
But ye are not given to the flesh; But to the spirit: If so be that the spirit of God dwell in you. If there be any man that hath not the spirit of Christ, the same is none of his.
Wherefore, if the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from death, dwell in you: even he that raised up Christ from death, shall quicken your mortal bodies, because that this spirit dwelleth in you.
for as many as are led by the spirit of God: they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage to fear anymore, but ye have received the spirit of adoption whereby we cry, "Abba father." read more. The same spirit certifieth our spirit that we are the sons of God.
For those which he knew before, he also ordained before, that they should be like fashioned unto the shape of his son, that he might be the first begotten son among many brethren.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercifulness of God, that ye make your bodies a living sacrifice: holy and acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable serving of God. And fashion not yourselves like unto this world: But be changed through the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what thing that good, that acceptable, and perfect will of God is. read more. For I say, through the grace that unto me is given, to every man among you: that no man esteem of himself more than it becometh him to esteem - But that he discreetly judge of himself according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. As we have many members in one body, and all members have not one office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ - and every man, among ourselves, one another's members. Seeing that we have divers gifts according to the grace that is given unto us: if any man have the gift of prophecy, let him have it that it be agreeing unto the faith;
Seeing that we have divers gifts according to the grace that is given unto us: if any man have the gift of prophecy, let him have it that it be agreeing unto the faith; Let him that hath an office, wait on his office; read more. Let him that teacheth take heed to his doctrine; Let him that exhorteth give attendance to his exhortation; If any man give, let him do it with singleness; Let him that ruleth do it with diligence; If any man show mercy let him do it with cheerfulness.
But God hath opened them unto us by his spirit. For the spirit searcheth all things, yea the bottom of God's secrets.
But God hath opened them unto us by his spirit. For the spirit searcheth all things, yea the bottom of God's secrets. For what man knoweth the things of a man: save the spirit of a man which is within him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the spirit of God. read more. And we have not received the spirit of the world: but the spirit which cometh of God, for to know the things that are given to us of God,
Are ye not aware that ye are the temple of God, and how that the spirit of God dwelleth in you?
And such were ye verily: but ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified by the name of the Lord Jesus: And by the spirit of our God.
Either, know ye not how that your bodies are the temple of the holy ghost, which is in you, whom he have of God, and how that ye are not your own?
Wherefore I declare unto you that no man speaking in the spirit of God defieth Jesus. Also no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the holy ghost.
The gifts of the spirit are given to every man to profit the congregation. To one is given, through the spirit, the utterance of wisdom; to another is given the utterance of knowledge by the same spirit; read more. to another is given faith, by the same spirit; to another the gifts of healing, by the same spirit;
to another is given faith, by the same spirit; to another the gifts of healing, by the same spirit; to another, power to do miracles; to another prophecy; to another, judgment of spirits; to another divers tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
to another, power to do miracles; to another prophecy; to another, judgment of spirits; to another divers tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
For in one spirit are we all baptised to make one body, whether we be Jews or gentiles: whether we be bond or free, and have all drunk of one spirit.
For in one spirit are we all baptised to make one body, whether we be Jews or gentiles: whether we be bond or free, and have all drunk of one spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. read more. If the foot say, "I am not the hand, therefore I am not of the body," is he therefore not of the body? And if the ear say, "I am not the eye, therefore I am not of the body," is he therefore not of the body? If all the body were an eye: where were then the ear? If all were hearing: where were the smelling? But now hath God disposed the members, every one of them in the body, at his own pleasure. If they were all one member: where were the body? Now are there many members, yet but one body.
For our honest members need it not: but God hath so disposed the body, and hath given most honour to that part which lacked,
And God hath also ordained in the congregation, first the apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, then them that do miracles; after that, the gifts of healing, helpers, governors, diversity of tongues.
And God hath also ordained in the congregation, first the apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, then them that do miracles; after that, the gifts of healing, helpers, governors, diversity of tongues.
And God hath also ordained in the congregation, first the apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, then them that do miracles; after that, the gifts of healing, helpers, governors, diversity of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all doers of miracles? read more. Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? Covet after the best gifts. And yet show I unto you a more excellent way.
Covet after the best gifts. And yet show I unto you a more excellent way.
Covet after the best gifts. And yet show I unto you a more excellent way.
Covet after the best gifts. And yet show I unto you a more excellent way.
And though I could prophesy, and understood all secrets, and all knowledge: yea, if I had all faith so that I could move mountains out of their places, and yet had no love, I were nothing.
Now abideth faith, hope, and love, even these three: but the chief of these is love.
Labour for love, and covet spiritual gifts: and most chiefly for to prophesy.
Labour for love, and covet spiritual gifts: and most chiefly for to prophesy.
Labour for love, and covet spiritual gifts: and most chiefly for to prophesy. For he that speaketh with tongues speaketh not unto men, but unto God. For no man heareth him: Howbeit, in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. read more. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men, to edifying, to exhortation, and to comfort. He that speaketh with tongues, profiteth himself: he that prophesieth, edifieth the congregation. I would that ye all spake with tongues: but rather that ye prophesied. For greater is he that prophesieth, than he that speaketh with tongues, except he expound it also, that the congregation may have edifying. Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues: what shall I profit you? Except I speak to you, either by revelation, or knowledge, or prophesying, or doctrine. Moreover when things without life give sound: whether it be a pipe, or a harp - except they make a distinction in the sounds - how shall it be known what is piped or harped? And also if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself to fight? Even so, likewise, when ye speak with tongues, except ye speak words that have signification, how shall it be understood what is spoken? For ye shall but speak in the air. Many kinds of voices are in the world, and none of them are without signification. If I know not what the voice meaneth, I shall be unto him that speaketh an alien: and he that speaketh shall be an alien unto me. Even so ye - forasmuch as ye covet spiritual gifts - seek that ye may have plenty unto the edifying of the congregation.
Even so ye - forasmuch as ye covet spiritual gifts - seek that ye may have plenty unto the edifying of the congregation. Wherefore, let him that speaketh with tongues, pray: that he may interpret also. read more. If I pray with tongues, my spirit prayeth: but my mind is without fruit. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and will pray with the mind also. I will sing with the spirit, and will sing with the mind also. For else when thou blessest with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say "amen" at thy giving of thanks? Seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? Thou verily givest thanks well: but the other is not edified. I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all. Yet had I rather, in the congregation, to speak five words with my mind to the information of others, rather than ten thousand words with the tongue.
For the spirits of the prophets are in the power of the prophets.
The Lord no doubt is a spirit. And where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
For God was in Christ, and made agreement between the world and himself, and imputed not their sins unto them: and hath committed to us the preaching of the atonement.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the holy ghost, be with you all. Amen. {The end of the Second Epistle unto the Corinthians, Sent from Philippi, a city in Macedonia, by Titus and Luke}

And when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him in the face, for he was worthy to be blamed. For yer that certain came from James, he ate with the gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision,

Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing at all.
For in Christ Jesus nether circumcision availeth any thing at all nor uncircumcision: but a new creature.
And hath put all things under his feet, and hath made him above all things, the head of the congregation:
remember, I say, that ye were at that time without Christ, and were reputed aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and were strangers from the testaments of promise, and had no hope, and were without God in this world.

Unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

And grieve not the holy spirit of God, by whom ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
I thank my God with all remembrance of you,
For God beareth me record how greatly I long after you all from the very heart-root in Jesus Christ.
For God beareth me record how greatly I long after you all from the very heart-root in Jesus Christ.

Nevertheless, he made himself of no reputation, and took on him the shape of a servant, and became like unto men, and was found in his apparel as a man. He humbled himself and became obedient unto the death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God hath exalted him, and given him a name above all names: That in the name of Jesus should every knee bow, both of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under earth; and that all tongues should confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord unto the praise of God the father.

And all things, whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the father by him. Wives, submit your own selves unto your own husbands, as it is comely in the Lord.
This commandment commit I unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which in time past were prophesied of thee, that thou in them shouldest fight a good fight,
Despise not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee through prophecy, and with laying on of the hands of an elder.
Despise not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee through prophecy, and with laying on of the hands of an elder.
Despise not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee through prophecy, and with laying on of the hands of an elder.
Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: Keep thyself pure.
Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: Keep thyself pure.
Wherefore I warn thee that thou stir up the gift of God which is in thee, by the putting on of my hands.
Wherefore I warn thee that thou stir up the gift of God which is in thee, by the putting on of my hands.
And forasmuch also as thou hast known holy scripture of a child, which is able to make thee wise unto salvation through the faith, which is in Christ Jesus. For all scripture given by inspiration of God, is profitable to teach, to improve, to amend, and to instruct in righteousness,
God, in time past, diversely and many ways, spake unto the fathers by prophets: but in these last days he hath spoken unto us by his son, whom he hath made heir of all things: by whom also he made the world. read more. Which son, being the brightness of his glory, and very image of his substance, bearing up all things with the word of his power, hath in his own person purged our sins, and is sitten on the righthand of the majesty on high,

of baptism, of doctrine, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection from death, and of eternal judgment.
Wherefore he is able also ever to save them that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth, to make intercession for us.
How much more shall the blood of Christ - which through the eternal spirit, offered himself without spot to God - purge your consciences from dead works, for to serve the living God?
Seeing, brethren, that by the means of the blood of Jesus, we may be bold to enter into that holy place, by the new and living way, which he hath prepared for us, through the veil, that is to say by his flesh.
whose voice then shook the earth, and now declareth, saying "Yet once more will I shake, not the earth only, but also heaven."
If any be diseased among you, let him call for the elders of the congregation, and let them pray over him, and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up: and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
Likewise, ye younger submit yourselves unto the elder. Submit yourselves every man, one to another. Knit yourselves together in lowliness of mind. For God resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble.
So that ye first know this: That no prophecy in the scripture hath any private interpretation. For the scripture came never by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the holy ghost.
And suppose that the long suffering of the Lord is salvation, even as our dearly beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given unto him, wrote to you, yea, almost in every epistle, speaking of such things: among which are many things hard to be understood: which they that are unlearned and unstable pervert, as they do other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
That which was from the beginning, declare we unto you; which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the word of life.
The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, for to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass. Happy is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of the prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein. For the time is at hand. John, to the seven congregations in Asia. Grace be with you and peace, from him which is and which was, and which is to come: and from the seven spirits which are present before his throne, and from Jesus Christ which is a faithful witness, and first begotten of the dead: and Lord over the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and made us kings and priests unto God his father, be glory, and dominion for evermore amen. Behold, he cometh with clouds, and all eyes shall see him: and they also which pierced him. And all kindreds of the earth shall wail. Even so, amen. "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending," saith the Lord almighty, which is and which was and which is to come. John, your brother and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience which is in Jesus Christ, was in the isle of Patmos for the word of God, and for the witnessing of Jesus Christ. I was in the spirit on a Sunday, and heard behind me a great voice, as it had been of a trumpet, saying, "I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. That thou seest, write in a book and send it unto the congregations which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamum, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea." And I turned back to see the voice that spake to me. And when I was turned: I saw seven golden candlesticks. And in the midst of the candlesticks, one like unto the son of man clothed with a linen garment down to the ground, and gird about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white, as white wool, and as snow: and his eyes were as a flame of fire: and his feet like unto brass, as though they burnt in a furnace: and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars. And out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword. And his face shone even as the sun in his strength. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet, even as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, "Fear not. I am the first and the last,
And when I saw him, I fell at his feet, even as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, "Fear not. I am the first and the last, and am alive, and was dead. And behold I am alive for evermore, and have the keys of hell and of death.
"And unto the messenger of the congregation which is in Laodicea write, 'This saith - amen - the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creatures of God.
And I fell at his feet, to worship him. And he said unto me, "See thou do it not. For I am thy fellow servant, and one of thy brethren, and of them that have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."
And he that sat upon the seat said, "Behold I make all things new." And he said unto me, "Write, for these words are faithful and true." And he said unto me, "It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning, and the end. I will give to him that is athirst of the well of the water of life, free.
And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the seat of God and of the lamb.
