The present article will be confined to Biblical Ethics. As there is no systematic presentation of the subject, all that can be done is to gather from the Jewish and Christian writings the moral conceptions that were formed by historians, prophets, poets, apostles. The old history culminates in the story of the perfect One, the Lord Jesus Christ, from whom there issued a life of higher order and ampler range.

And when the LORD walked before him, he cried, "LORD, LORD God full of compassion and mercy, which art not lightly angry but abundant in mercy and truth, and keepest mercy in store for thousands, and forgivest wickedness, trespass and sin - for there is no man innocent before thee - and visitest the wickedness of the fathers upon the children and upon children's children, even unto the third and fourth generation."
Six days ye shall work, but the seventh day shall be unto you the holy Sabbath of the LORD's rest: so that whosoever doth any work therein, shall die. Moreover, ye shall kindle no fire throughout all your habitations upon the Sabbath day."

Thou shalt not curse the deaf, neither put a stumbling block before the blind: but shalt fear thy God. I am the LORD.

Take heed to thyself therefore only and keep thy soul diligently, that thou forget not the things which thine eyes have seen, and that they depart not out of thine heart, all the days of thine life: but teach them thy sons, and thy son's sons.

Thus the LORD commandeth: Keep equity and righteousness, deliver the oppressed from the power of the violent: do not grieve nor oppress the stranger, the fatherless nor the widow, and shed no innocent blood in this place.
Even so shall the LORD now also appear unto me from far, and say, 'I love thee with an everlasting love, therefore do I spread my mercy before thee.'
Then shall it no more be said, 'The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge.' For every one shall die for his own misdeed, so that who so eateth a sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.

"What mean ye by this common proverb, that ye use in the land of Israel, saying, 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'? As truly as I live, sayeth the LORD God, ye shall use this byword no more in Israel.
And yet say ye, 'Wherefore then should not this son bear his father's sin?' Therefore, because the son hath done equity and right, hath kept all my commandments and done them: therefore shall he live indeed. The soul that sinneth, she shall die. The son shall not bear part of the father's wickedness. The righteousness of the right shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.
The hand of the LORD came upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and let me down in a plain field that lay full of bones. And he led me round about by them, and behold, the bones that lay upon the field were very many, and marvelous dry also. read more. Then said he unto me, "Thou son of man: thinkest thou these bones may live again?" And I answered, "O LORD God, thou knowest." So I prophesied, as he had commanded me: then came the breath into them and they received life, and stood up upon their feet: a marvelous great sortie. Moreover, he said unto me, "Thou son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, 'Our bones are dried up, our hope is gone, we are clean cut off.' Therefore prophesy thou, and speak unto them, 'Thus sayeth the LORD God: Behold, I will open your graves, O my people, and take you out of your sepulchers, and bring you into the land of Israel again. So shall ye know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and bring you out of them. My spirit also will I put in you, and ye shall live: I will set you again in your own land, and ye shall know that I am the LORD which have said it, and fulfilled it indeed.'"
For I have pleasure in loving-kindness, and not in offering: Yea in the knowledge of God, more than in burnt sacrifice. But even like as Adam did, so have they broken my covenant, and set me at naught.
Set the horn to thy mouth, and blow: get thee swiftly as an Eagle into the house of the LORD: for they have broken my covenant, and transgressed my law.
When Israel was young, I loved him: and called my son out of the land of Egypt.
had not I defended him from the grave, and delivered him from death. O death, I will be thy death: O hell, I will be thy sting.
I will heal their obedience and will love them of mine own accord: for my wrath is ceased from them.
Hear, what the LORD speaketh unto you, O ye children of Israel: namely, unto all the tribes, whom I brought out of Egypt, and said, 'You only have I accepted from all the generations of the earth: therefore will I visit you in all your wickednesses. read more. "'I hate and abhor your holidays, and whereas ye cense me when ye come together I will not accept it.
And should not I have compassion on Nineveh that great city, wherein there is a multitude of people, even above a hundred thousand that know not their righthand from the left, besides much cattle?"
Where is there such a God as thou? That pardonest wickedness, and forgivest the offenses of the remnant of thine heritage? He keepeth not his wrath for ever. And why? His delight is to have compassion.
"Thus sayeth the LORD of Hosts, 'Execute true judgment, and show mercy and loving-kindness, every man to his brother.
So the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, "Thus sayeth the LORD of Hosts: I was in a great jealousy over Zion, yea I have been very jealous over her in great displeasure. read more. Thus saith the LORD: I will return to Zion and will dwell in the middle of Jerusalem. And Jerusalem shall be called the city of truth and the hill of the LORD Sabaoth and a holy hill. Thus saith the LORD Sabaoth: yet there shall sit both old men and old women in the streets of Jerusalem and men with staves in their hands for the multitude of days. And the streets of the city shall be filled with boys and wenches playing in the streets thereof. Thus saith the LORD Sabaoth: though it seem hard in the eyes of the remnant of this people, shall it seem hard in mine eyes saith the LORD Sabaoth. Thus saith the LORD Sabaoth: behold, I will deliver my people from the east country and from the land of the going down of the sun, and will bring them that they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God in truth and righteousness.
I made a covenant of life and peace with him: this I gave him, that he might stand in awe of me: and so he did fear me, and had my name in reverence. So like wise shall my heavenly father do unto you, except ye forgive with your hearts, each one to his brother their trespasses."
All their works they do, for to be seen of men. They set abroad their phylacteries, and make large borders on their garments,

When Jesus heard that, he said unto them, "The whole have no need of the Physician: but the sick. I came not to call the righteous, but the sinners to repentance."
Also no man seweth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for then taketh he away the new piece from the old, and so is the rent worse. In like wise, no man poureth new wine into old vessels, for if he do, the new wine breaketh the vessels, and the wine runneth out, and the vessels are marred. But new wine must be poured into new vessels."
And when they saw certain of his disciples eat bread with common hands, that is to say, with unwashen hands, they complained. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands often, eat not; observing the traditions of the elders. read more. Beyond all this, between you and us there is a great space set, so that they which would go from hence to you, cannot: neither may come from thence to us.' Then he said, 'I pray thee therefore father, send him to my father's house. For I have five brethren: for to warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' Abraham said unto him, 'They have Moses and the prophets: let them hear them.' And he said, 'Nay, father Abraham, but if one came unto them from the dead they would repent.' He said unto him, 'If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe, though one rose from death again.'"
"Two men went up into the temple to pray: the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are; extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or as this publican. read more. I fast twice in the week. If I had not come and spoken unto them, they should not have had sin: but now have they nothing to cloak their sin withal. He that hateth me, hateth my father. read more. Because of his humbleness, he was not esteemed. Who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth." The chamberlain answered Philip, and said, "I pray thee of whom speaketh the prophet this? Of himself? Or of some other man?" And Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water, and the chamberlain said, "See: here is water, what shall let me to be baptised?" Philip said unto him, "If thou believe with all thine heart, thou mayest." He answered, and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God." And he commanded the chariot to stand still. And they went down both into the water: both Philip and also the chamberlain. And he baptised him. And as soon as they were come out of the water, the spirit of the Lord caught away Philip; that the chamberlain saw him no more. And he went on his way rejoicing:
And as it chanced Peter to come in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, "Stand Up: for even I myself am a man."
Paul, the servant of Jesus Christ, called unto the office to be an apostle, put apart to preach the Gospel of God,
For he is not a Jew, which is a Jew outward. Neither is that thing circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew which is hid within, and the circumcision of the heart is the true circumcision, which is in the spirit, and not in the letter: whose praise is not of men but of God.
Do we then destroy the law through faith? God forbid. But we, rather, maintain the law.
Because therefore that we are justified by faith we are at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom we have a way in, through faith, unto this grace wherein we stand and rejoice in hope of the praise that shall be given of God.
Yet scarce will any man die for a righteous man. Peradventure for a good man durst a man die. But God setteth out his love that he hath to us; Seeing that while we were yet sinners; Christ died for us.

Give to every man therefore his duty: Tribute to whom tribute belongeth: Custom to whom custom is due: fear to whom fear belongeth: Honour to whom honour pertaineth.
