if you will move it then to the tribune in the name of the Sanhedrim, to send him here to-morrow, under colour of examining his affair with more solemnity, we shall take care to dispatch him, and make a short end of his journey."

ordering his accusers to appear before you. if you please to interrogate him yourself, you will find the whole charge to be truly laid."

Then Felix adjourn'd them, saying, I shall inform myself more particularly of this sect, and when general Lysias comes, I will give you a full hearing.

but as he was treating of justice, temperance, and a future judgment, Felix greatly alarm'd, said, "withdraw for the present; and when I am at leisure, I will send for you."

but Festus willing to oblige the Jews ask'd him, will you consent to go to Jerusalem, and take your trial before me there?

they can testify, if they will, that I early profess'd myself a Pharisee, a member of the most rigorous sect of our religion:

"my friends, said he, I foresee our voyage will be attended with great difficulties, and no small risk of losing not only the ship and cargo, but our lives too."

yet now I advise you to discard your fears: your lives are all safe, though the vessel will be lost.

you must be brought before Cesar: and upon your account, the whole company now with you, will God preserve.

take notice therefore, that the offers of divine salvation are sent to the Gentiles, and they will receive them.

if it be God's will, that I might now at length have the happiness of coming to you.

who will render to every man according to his actions: eternal life to those,

you know the divine will, and what is contrary thereto, having been educated in the law:

since it is one God, who will justify both the Jews and the Gentiles, through faith.

happy is the man to whom the Lord will not account sin."

now hope will not deceive us, because the love of God is diffused thro' our hearts, by the holy spirit which is given to us;

wherefore she will be reputed an adulteress if she become another man's during her husband's life: but if her husband dies, she is clear from that law, from the imputation of being an adulteress, though she become another man's.

for I experience, that in the carnal part of me dwells no good: for it is familiar to me, to will, but not to execute that which is good.

for if you lead a sensual life, you will be miserable: but if through the spirit you mortify the affections of corrupted nature, you will be happy.

and he that penetrates into the heart approves what the spirit desires, because what he demands for the saints is agreeable to the divine will.

he that spared not his own son, but delivered him up for us all, will he not with him likewise freely give us all things?

for the words of the promise run thus, "at this time I will come, and Sara shall have a son."

God forbid. for he saith to Moses, "I will show favour to whom I will show favour, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion."

But you will object, why does he then find fault? for "who can resist his will?"

as he saith himself in Osee, "I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her, beloved, which was not beloved.

for in ballancing the account, the Lord will leave a small remainder upon the land."

but still I ask, did not Israel know this? first, Moses saith, "I will provoke you to jealousy, by those that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you."

You will say then, hath God discarded his people? by no means. for I my self am an Israelite, of the posterity of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

You will say then, "were they suffer'd to stumble meerly for their ruin?" no: but that thro' their fall, salvation might be offer'd to the Gentiles, in order to provoke their emulation.

now if their fall be to the advancement of the world, and the few converts among them bring in whole numbers of the Gentiles: how much more so will it be, when the Jewish body recover?

if then, some of the branches are broken off, and thou like a wild olive, were grafted in their place to partake of the root and sap of the olivestock;

you will say then, "the branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in."

consider then the divine benignity, and his severity: his severity to those who fell, and his benignity to you, provided you adhere thereto; otherwise you likewise will be lopt off.

for if you were taken from the wild olive, which was natural to you, to be grafted into a good olive-stock of a different nature, with how much greater reason shall these who are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive-tree?

who hath given any thing to him, and he will repay it?

dear brethren, avenge not yourselves, but leave that to the resentment of another: for it is written, "vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."

therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing, you will heap coals of fire on his head .

so that he who opposes the ruler, disobeys the orders of God: and will be punished too for resisting, by those very powers.

now if your brother be endanger'd by your eating, you violate the obligations of love: for such a matter as eating, will you risk his life, for whom Christ died?

and you Gentiles ought to glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, "for this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name ."

for I will not offer to mention any thing, but what Christ has wrought by me, to make the Gentiles christians, both in profession and practice:

when I have dispatch'd this affair, and have secur'd to them this collection, I will come to you in my way to Spain.

that by the will of God we may meet with joy, and rest together in peace.

the God of peace will soon bruise Satan under your feet. the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Paul appointed by the divine will to be an apostle of Jesus Christ, and Sosthenes our brother,

so that you will be deficient in no gift; during your expectation of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

and God will confirm you to the end, that ye may be unaccused in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

for he, who has called you to the communication of his son Jesus Christ our Lord, will make good his promise.

for it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent."

However, what we preach is wisdom, to those who are thoroughly instructed: yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who will soon come to nothing.

will be expos'd. for the time of tryal will show it: it shall be discovered by the fire, which will put each sort of work to the test.

if that man's work should be burnt, he will suffer loss: but should he himself escape, it will be as out of the fire.

therefore suspend your judgment till the Lord comes, who will bring to light the secrets of darkness, and expose the counsels of mens hearts: and then shall every man have his due reward from God.

'tis for this end I have sent you Timothy, who is my dear disciple, and a faithful christian, who will inform you how I behave my self in every church where I teach the gospel of Christ.

but if the Lord pleases, I will visit you very soon; and then I shall try, not what these boasters can say, but what they can do:

those that are without, God will judge. therefore expel the libertine from your community.

When any controversy arises among you, will any one presume to appeal to the Gentiles, and not to Christians?

Are all things lawful for me? however, all things are not expedient: are all things lawful for me? however, I will not be a slave to any.

for as God hath raised up the Lord, so will he likewise raise us up to partake of his own power.

but if the infidel will separate, let him go: a brother or a sister is not inslaved in such cases. but God has called us to peace; for how do you know,

not that it is a sin for you to marry; nor is it so if a virgin marry; but they that do, will be troubled for their relations, and that I would prevent.

This I say, brethren, because the time is coming, when they who have wives will be as those that have none;

but she will be happier, if she remain a widow, in my opinion: and I think the divine spirit suggests the same.

for if any man see you who have a just notion of idols, sitting at table in their temple, will not the person who is wrong in his notions be incouraged to eat what is offered to idols, tho' contrary to his own opinion?

wherefore if my eating makes my brother offend, I will never eat flesh rather than make my brother offend.

now if I do this willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, it is a dispensation of trust which must be discharged.

you have met with no trials yet, but such as are common to men: and God who is faithful, will not suffer you to be tempted above your strength; but will with the temptation make a way to escape, by enabling you to bear it.

for there must be factions among you, whereby it will appear who among you are the approved.

and if any one is press'd with hunger, let him eat at home; that ye may not otherwise meet with punishment. as for other matters, I will set them in order when I come.

Social affection will never fail: but as for prophecies, they shall be out of use; as for languages, they shall cease; as for knowledge, it shall vanish away.

now we do but indirectly see the faint images of things; but then the objects themselves will be before our eyes; now I have a partial knowledge, but then shall I know, even as I myself am known.

and now faith, hope, social virtue, these three will all remain; but the most permanent of the three is social virtue.

what then is to be done? why, I will pray by the spirit, but my prayer shall be intelligible: I will sing by the spirit, but my hymn shall be intelligible.

in the law it is written, " with men of other tongues and other lips, will I speak unto this people: and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord."

when therefore the whole church is assembled, and all speak different languages, if such as are either unlearned, or are unbelievers should come in, will they not say you are all mad?

the secrets of his heart become manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, and declare that God is certainly amongst you.

but if he will be blind, I leave him to his blindness.

by which also you will be saved, if you so retain it as I preached it to you, unless you have believed without sufficient grounds.

for since by man came death, by man the resurrection of the dead will likewise come.

and then will be the end, when he shall deliver up the kingdom to God even the father; after having abolished all rule, and all authority, and power.

But some will say, how will the dead be raised? with what kind of body will they appear?

such will be the resurrection of the dead: the body is sown corruptible, it will be raised incorruptible.

it is sown in dishonour, it will be raised in glory: it is sown in decay, it will be raised in power:

it is sown an animal body, it will rise a spiritual body. there is an animal body, and there is a spiritual body.

therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye inflexibly steady, and continually surpass others in the work of the Lord, knowing that he will not leave your christian labour unrewarded.

and when I come, I shall send such as you shall approve of, who will convey letters, and your kind present to Jerusalem.

as to brother Apollos, I earnestly entreat him to make you a visit, with the brethren: but he has not the least mind to it at present; however, he will be with you when a fit occasion offers.

and the hopes I had of you continue still the same, knowing that as you have had your share of suffering, so you will likewise have of consolation.

In reality, we writ nothing to you, but what you may perceive by the reading, and I trust you ever will perceive.

as some of you have already own'd, that I am matter of joy to you, as you will be to me in the day of the Lord Jesus Christ:

and I wrote to you upon that disagreeable subject, that when I came, I might not receive uneasiness from those from whom I ought to receive comfort, being persuaded that you will all think yourselves interested to promote my satisfaction.

for if the ministration of condemnation was illustrious, the ministration of righteousness will be much more glorious.

for the light affliction, which I at present suffer, will be infinitely over-ballanced by an eternal weight of glory;

and what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God has said, "I will dwell with, and walk among them; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

wherefore come out from among them, be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

I will be a father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."

that as you excel in every thing, in faith, in language, mystical knowledge, in all virtue, and in your affection to us; I hope you will excel too in this charitable disposition.

that as your present sufficiency supplies their wants, their sufficiency may supply your occasions another way: and thus there will be an equality.

having this proof of you by such a supply, they will glorify God for your profess'd subjection to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution to them as well as others;

and you will have the advantage of their earnest prayers, for the exceeding favour God has bestowed upon them by you:
