John answered them, saying, 'I baptize with water, but in midst of you he hath stood whom ye have not known, this one it is who is coming after me, who hath been before me,

I did not recognize Him [as the Messiah]; but I came baptizing in water so that He would be [publicly] revealed to Israel.”

Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

What do you seek? They said to him: Rabbi, (which, when translated, is called Teacher,) where abidest thou?

And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

The next day Jesus decided to go into Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher, and walking the same path of life that I walk].”

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip finds Nathanael, and says to him, We have found him of whom Moses wrote in the law, and the prophets, Jesus, the son of Joseph, who is from Nazareth.

and Nathanael said to him, 'Out of Nazareth is any good thing able to be?' Philip said to him, 'Come and see.'

Nathanael said to Jesus, “How do You know [these things about] me?” Jesus answered, “Before Philip called you, when you were still under the fig tree, I saw you.”

And they had no wine, because the wine of the marriage was exhausted. Then the mother of Jesus says to Him, There is no wine.

Mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith to the servants, Whatsoever he saith to you, do.

Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification (ceremonial washing), containing twenty or thirty gallons each.

And as the director of the apartment tasted the water become wine, and knew not whence it is, (but the ministrants knew, who have drawn the water,) the director of the feast doth call the bridegroom,

And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

Then, as the Jewish Passover was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

In the Temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, as well as moneychangers sitting at their tables.

So he made a whip of cords, and drove them all out of the Temple Courts, and the sheep and bullocks as well; he scattered the money of the money-changers, and overturned their tables,

and told the pigeon-dealers, "Away with these! My Father's house is not to be turned into a shop!"

As soon, therefore, as he was risen from death again, his disciples remembered that he thus said unto them. And they believed the scripture, and the words which Jesus had said.

And as he was in Jerusalem, in the passover, in the feast, many believed in his name, beholding his signs that he was doing;

Now there was a man of the Pharisees {whose name was} Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

Do not wonder that I said to thee, It is needful that ye should be born anew.

"How is all this possible?" asked Nicodemus.

"Most solemnly I tell you we are speaking of what we know, and it is about that of which we were eyewitnesses that we give testimony. Yet all of you reject our testimony.

if you don't believe when I tell you what is plain, how should you believe, if I tell you of things more sublime?

John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, as there was plenty of water there, and people came to him and were baptized

As the result, a discussion having arisen on the part of John's disciples with a Jew about purification,

and they came unto John, and said to him, 'Rabbi, he who was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou didst testify, lo, this one is baptizing, and all are coming unto him.'

John answered and said, 'A man is not able to receive anything, if it may not have been given him from the heaven;

You are yourselves witnesses that I said 'I am not the Christ,' but 'I have been sent before him as a Messenger.'

What He has [actually] seen and heard, of that He testifies; and yet no one accepts His testimony [as true].

And as He must pass through the country of Samaria, He came to a Samaritan city called Sichar,

Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

Now a fountain of Jacob's was there; Jesus therefore, being wearied with the way he had come, sat just as he was at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.
