"Once there was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and live in dazzling luxury every day.
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
Just then an expert in the law got up to test Him by asking, "Teacher, what shall I do to get possession of eternal life?"
Then the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you, and so your child will be called holy, the Son of God.
Now in those days an edict was issued by the Emperor Augustus that a census of the whole world should be taken.
Then He said to them all, "If anyone chooses to be my disciple, he must say 'No' to self, put the cross on his shoulders daily, and continue to follow me.
One Sabbath, when He went to take a meal at the house of a Pharisee who was a member of the council, they continued to watch Him closely.
So He came to Nazareth where He had been brought up, and as His habit was on the Sabbath, He went to the synagogue and stood up to read.
Now as they were journeying on, He came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him to her house.
Once He was praying in a certain place, and when He ceased, one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples."
Now He told them the following story to show how necessary it is for people always to pray and never to give up:
Now great crowds were going along with Him, and all at once He turned and said to them:
Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and for forty days He was led about in the desert under the Spirit's guidance,
Now one of the Pharisees invited Him to take dinner with him. So He came to the Pharisee's house and took His place at the table.
Since many writers have undertaken to compose narratives about the facts established among us,
After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on before Him, two by two, to every town or place which He was going to visit.
And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both of them were far advanced in years.
Now on the Sabbath they rested, in accordance with the commandment, but on the first day of the week at early dawn they went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared.
But I say to you who listen now to me, practice loving your enemies, practice doing good to those who hate you,
Practice forgiving others, and you will be forgiven. Practice giving to others, and they will give to you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, people will pour into your lap. For the measure you use with others they in turn will use with you."
while all the throng of people were praying outside at the hour of the incense burning.
Once when he was acting as priest before God, when his division was on duty, it fell to his lot,
Then He took a loaf, gave thanks, and broke it in pieces, and gave it to them, and said, "This is my body which is to be given for you. Do this as a memorial to me."
To some people who were confident that they themselves were upright, but who scorned everybody else, He told the following story:
Once as the crowd was pressing against Him to hear the message of God, He found Himself standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret.
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and still more, his own life too, he cannot be a disciple of mine.
And the scribes and the Pharisees were closely watching Him to see whether He would cure him on the Sabbath, in order to get a charge against Him.
Then He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you, that everything which is written about me in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the Psalms, had to be fulfilled."
On that very day, strange to say, two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem,
So He said to him, "I solemnly say to you, this very day you will be in paradise with me."
in accordance with the priests' customs, to go into the sanctuary of the Lord to burn the incense,
Just then a man in the crowd said to Him, "Tell my brother to share with me our inheritance."
Stop being afraid, my little flock, for your Father has gladly chosen to give you the kingdom.
Now all the tax-collectors and notorious sinners were crowding around Him to listen to Him.
'We are wiping off against you the very dust from your town that has stuck to our feet. But understand this, the kingdom of God is close by.'
Now Jesus Himself was about thirty years old when He began His work; He was the son, as was supposed, of Joseph, the son of Eli,
Then he answered, "You must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole soul, your whole strength, and your whole mind, and your neighbor as you do yourself."
And I will send down upon you what my Father has promised. But you, on your part, must stay right here in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."
Just at that time some people came up to tell Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate mingled with that of their sacrifices.
and that in His name repentance as the condition for the forgiveness of sins should be preached to all the nations. Beginning at Jerusalem
In the fifteenth year of the reign of the Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was governor of Galilee, and his brother Philip was governor of the territory of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was governor of Abilene,
Now there were some shepherds in the same neighborhood, living in the open fields and keeping watch over their flock by night.
Then He fixed His eyes upon His disciples, and began to speak. "Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours!
"It is fire that I have come to bring upon the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!
In the days when Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest whose name was Zechariah, who belonged to the division of Abijah. His wife was also a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Meanwhile Jesus grew constantly in wisdom and in body, and in favor with God and man.
And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on earth despair of nations in bewilderment at the roaring of the sea and its waves,
Then Jesus in the power of the Spirit returned to Galilee, and news of Him spread all over the surrounding country.
Look at my hands and my feet, for it is I, myself. Feel of me and see for yourselves, for a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have."
I tell you, on that day the punishment will be lighter for Sodom than for that town.
Then they began to discuss among themselves which one it was who was going to do this.
Now when all the people had been baptized, and when Jesus had been baptized and was still praying, heaven opened
And then He said to them, "Be ever on the alert and always on your guard against every form of greed, because a man's life does not consist in his possessions, even though they are abundant."
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His forefather David,
Now as the time was coming to a head when He should be taken up to heaven, He firmly set His face to continue His journey to Jerusalem;
Now about eight days after Jesus said this, He took Peter, John, and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.
Now He was saying to the disciples: "Once there was a rich man who had a household manager, and he was accused to his master of squandering the latter's property.
Now, when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with visible display,
Then He began with Moses and went through all the prophets and explained to them all the passages in the Scriptures about Himself.
Yes, you must practice dealing with others as you would like them to deal with you.
His parents were in the habit of going to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.
So if you, in spite of your being bad, know how to give your children what is good, how much more surely will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who continue to ask Him?"
As He was going on to Jerusalem, He chanced to pass through Samaria and Galilee.
Then He called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and to cure diseases,
Even while they were talking about these things, He took His stand among them Himself, [and said to them, "Peace to you!"]
So I tell you, keep on asking, and the gift will be given you; keep on seeking, and you will find; keep on knocking, and the door will open to you.
Then Jesus uttered a loud cry, and said, "Father, I now commit my spirit to your care." As He said this He breathed His last.
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet, not my will but always yours be done!"
Every ravine must be filled up, and every mountain and hill leveled down; the crooked places must become straight roads, and the rough roads must be made smooth,
for today, in the town of David, a Saviour for you has been born, who is to be your Messiah and Lord.
But another one came in and said, 'Here is your twenty dollars, sir, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief.
But the crowds learned of it, and followed Him; and He welcomed them and began to speak to them about the kingdom of God and to cure the people who needed to be cured.
Soon afterwards He chanced to be making a tour of Galilee from town to town and from village to village preaching and telling the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve went with Him,
But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured her on the Sabbath, answered the crowd, "There are six days on which people must work; so come on these and be cured, but not on the Sabbath."
and said to them, "The Scriptures said that the Christ should suffer as He has suffered, should rise from the dead on the third day,
Then a certain member of the council asked Him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to get possession of eternal life?"
Listen! I have given you power to tread on snakes and scorpions, and to trample on all the power of the enemy, and nothing at all will ever harm you.
Then stop criticizing others, and you will never be criticized; stop condemning others, and you will never be condemned.
Soon afterwards He chanced to go to a town called Nain, and His disciples and a great throng of people were going along with Him.
Now it was in those days that He went up on the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.
But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and stand at the front." So he got up and stood there.
Then Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is far advanced in years."
Jesus answered: "A man was on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell into the hands of robbers, who both stripped him and beat him till he was half dead, and then went off and left him.
But the angel said to them: "Stop being afraid, for now I bring you good tidings of great joy which is to be for all the people;
Now in those days Mary got up and hurried off to the hill country, to a town in Judah,
They will fall by the edge of the sword and will be carried off as captives among all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled under the feet of the heathen, until the times of the heathen come to full measure.
So He said to them, "Whenever you pray, say: 'Father, Your name be revered; Your kingdom come;
Now you will keep silent and be unable to talk until the day when this takes place, because you did not believe what I told you, for it will be fulfilled at the proper time."
and the Holy Spirit came down upon Him in bodily form as a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "You are my Son, my Beloved! In you I am delighted!"
But the one who does wrong without knowing it will be lightly punished. Much will be demanded from anyone to whom much has been given; yea, people will demand much more from anyone to whom they have entrusted much.
For I too am under authority of others, and have soldiers under me, and I order one to go, and he goes, another to come, and he comes, my slave to do this, and he does it."
Meanwhile the people kept waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the sanctuary.
"Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for He has come and brought His people deliverance;
But at the judgment the punishment will be lighter for Tyre and Sidon than for you.
And often he craved to fill himself with the carob-pods which the hogs were eating, and nobody gave him a bite.
Any man who divorces his wife to marry another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries the woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
He said to them, "I was looking at Satan failing like a flash of lightning from heaven.
Now when the period of their purification ended, in accordance with the law of Moses, they took Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord, to do as it is written in the law of the Lord,
John expressly answered them all, "I am baptizing you in water only, but there is coming the One who is stronger than I am, whose shoestrings I am not fit to untie. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire;
But the tax-collector stood at a distance and would not even lift his eyes to heaven, but continued to beat his breast, and say, 'O God, have mercy on me, a sinner!'
In like manner after supper He took a cup of wine, and said, "This cup of wine is the new covenant to be ratified by my blood, which is to be poured out for you.
They landed in the neighborhood of Gerasa, which is just across the lake from Galilee.
"When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, then understand that her devastation is near.
Then He came down with them and took His stand on a level place, where there was a great throng of His disciples and a vast crowd of people from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and the seacoast district of Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear Him and to be cured of their diseases.
and so people will not say, 'Look! Here it is,' nor, 'There it is,' for the kingdom of God is within you."
So the angel came to her home and said, "Congratulations, you highly favored woman! The Lord be with you!"
Now when the hour came, He took His place at the table, with the apostles about Him.
And just as it was in the time of Noah, so it will be in the time of the Son of Man.
As they were listening to these things, He told them another story, because He was near Jerusalem and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
Then He said to them, "O men sluggish in mind and slow in heart to believe all that the prophets have said!
As He approached it, just as soon as He saw the city, He burst into tears over it,
Then the angel said, "Stop being afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
Now the seventy returned and joyously reported, "Lord, even the demons are submitting to us in your name."
One day the beggar died and was carried away by the angels to be Abraham's bosom companion, and the rich man too died and was buried.
When He was eight days old and it was time to circumcise Him, He was named Jesus, the name given by the angel before Mary had conceived Him.
But ever be on your guard, so that your hearts may not be loaded down with self-indulgence, drunkenness, and worldly worries, and that day, like a trap, catch you unawares.
and she bore her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him up and laid Him in a manger, for there was no room for them at the inn.
Then He said to them, "But now the man who has a purse must take it, and a bag too. And the man who does not have a sword must sell his coat and buy one.
But you must practice loving your enemies, doing good to them, and lending to them, despairing of nothing; so that your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
"Be always looking out for another. If your brother ever sins, reprove him, and if he repents, forgive him.
Then He told them a story, as follows: "A certain rich man's lands yielded bountifully.
When He had finished all these sayings in the hearing of the people, He went into Capernaum.
Now there was in Jerusalem a man named Symeon, an upright, devout man; he was expecting to see the consolation of Israel, and he was under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
The man who is dependable in a very small matter is dependable also in a large deal, the man who is dishonest in a very small matter is dishonest also in a large deal.
Then He opened their minds so that they might continue to understand the Scriptures,
One day while He was praying in solitude, His disciples were nearby, and He asked them, "Who do people say that I am?"
But ever be watching and always praying, so that you may have strength to escape all this that is going to take place, and so you may take your stand in the presence of the Son of Man."
At that very moment, by the power of the Holy Spirit, He exulted and said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for concealing these matters from wise and learned men, and for revealing them to little children. Yes, Father, I thank you that your good pleasure made it so.
No house-servant can be a slave to two masters, for either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Then He said to His disciples: "Stop worrying, then, about life, as to what you will have to eat, or about your body, as to what you will have to wear.
It was the law and the prophets until John, but ever since that time the good news of the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everybody has been taking it by storm.
And the child continued to grow and gain in strength; He continued to increase in wisdom, and the spiritual blessing of God was on Him.
After this He went out and saw a tax-collector named Levi in his seat at the tax-collector's desk, and He said to him, "Follow me."
Now He said to His disciples: "It is inevitable that snares to evil will come, but a curse be on the man through whom they come!
Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinful person who repents than over ninety-nine upright people who do not need any repentance.
There arose also among them a contention as to which one of them should rank as greatest.
So He was saying to them: "The harvest is plentiful, but the reapers are scarce. So pray the Lord of the harvest to send out reapers to His harvest-field.
Then Jesus said to them, "Is it right on the Sabbath to do people good, or to do them evil, to save life or to take it?"
You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not bear false witness. Practice honoring your father and mother.'"
One day He got into a boat with His disciples, and He said to them, "Let us cross to the other side of the lake." So they set sail.
And in Hades he looked up, in constant tortures as he was, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus his bosom companion.
Now as they led Him away, they seized a man named Simon, from Cyrene, as he was coming in from the country, and put the cross on his shoulders, for him to carry as he walked behind Jesus.
When they reached the place called "The Skull," they crucified Him there; also the criminals, one at His right and one at His left.
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must drink no wine nor strong drink, and so he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his birth.
He will go before Him in the spirit and the power of Elijah to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the upright, to make ready for the Lord a people perfectly prepared."
I tell you, He will give them justice and protection, and that without delay. But when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?"
Now one of the criminals who were hanging from their crosses kept abusing Him, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Then save yourself and us too!"
Now some people were bringing even their babies to Him to have Him touch them, but the disciples, when they saw it, reproved them for it.
Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever pays no attention to you pays no attention to me, and whoever pays no attention to me pays no attention to Him who sent me."
One day as He was teaching, there were some Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Him to cure people.
But Jesus answered him, "The Scripture says, 'Not on bread alone does man live.'"
But one of the fellow-guests heard this, and said to Him, "Happy will be the man who is fortunate enough to be at the feast in the kingdom of God."
That slave who knows his master's wishes and does not get ready or act upon them will be severely punished.
There was also a prophetess there, Hannah, a daughter of Phanuel, who belonged to the tribe of Asher.
Then they said to each other, "Did not our hearts keep burning in our bosoms as He was talking to us on the road, as He went on explaining the Scriptures to us?"
So I tell you, my friends, never be afraid of those who kill the body but after that have nothing more that they can do.
Then He went out of the city and up the Mount of Olives, as He was in the habit of doing; and His disciples, too, followed Him there.
Meanwhile as the people had gathered in tens of thousands, so that they were trampling upon one another, He began to say, first of all, to His disciples: "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, hypocrisy.
The good man, out of his good inner storehouse, brings forth what is good, the bad man, out of his bad one, what is bad. For a man's mouth usually speaks the things that fill his heart.
"What man among you, if he wishes to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see whether he has money enough to complete it?
When these things begin to take place, look up and lift your heads, for your deliverance is drawing near."
One Sabbath He happened to be passing through the wheat fields, and His disciples were pulling and eating the heads of wheat, rubbing them in their hands.
Then He said to them: "Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him in the middle of the night and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves;
"Just so, no one of you who does not forsake everything that he has, can be a disciple of mine.
When Jesus heard this, He was astounded at him, and turning to the crowd that was following Him He said, "I tell you, I have not found, in a single case among the Jews, so great faith as this!"
However, you must stop rejoicing over the fact that the spirits are submitting to you, but continue to rejoice that your names are enrolled in heaven."
But when he came out, he could not speak to them, and so they knew that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. Meanwhile he kept on making signs to them, and remained dumb.
Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not everyone of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey and lead him out of the stable to water him?
to register with Mary who was engaged to be married to him and who was an expectant mother.
Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifted up His hands and blessed them.
So he began to argue with himself, 'What am I to do, because I have nowhere to store my crops?'
While they were going along the road, a man said to Him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
For I lived in constant dread of you, because you are a stern man, you pick up what you did not put down, you reap what you did not sow.'
Then Mary said, "I am the Lord's slave. May what you say take place with me." Then the angel left her.
Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow, and then continues to look back, is fitted for service in the kingdom of God."
It was already about noon, and darkness covered the whole country, and lasted until three o'clock,
But Jesus called them to Him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and stop preventing them from it, for to such as these the kingdom of God belongs.
But He said to them, "To other towns also I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God, for that is what I was sent to do."
Then he took Him up and in a second of time he showed Him all the kingdoms of the world.
So he used to say to the crowds that continued to come out there to be baptized by him: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to escape from the wrath that is coming?
"This is what the Lord has done for me when He smiled upon me to take away my disgrace among men."
But a curse on you Pharisees, because you pay tithes on mint, rue, and every tiny garden herb, but neglect justice and the love of God! These latter especially you ought to have done, but ought not to have neglected the former.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped within her. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
But bring those enemies of mine here who did not want me to become king over them and slay them in my presence!'"
Now while the people were on tiptoe in their expectations, and they were all arguing in their hearts about John whether he was himself the Christ,
Alas for the women who are pregnant and those who have nursing babies in those days! For there will be great misery in the land and wrath on this people.
And you, Capernaum, are you to be exalted to heaven? No, you are to go down to the regions of the dead.
Then the day of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
It is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dotting of an 'i' in the law to fail.
Now the feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was drawing near.
Then he took Him to Jerusalem, and had Him stand on the tip-top turret of the temple, and said to Him, "If you are God's Son, throw yourself down from here,
Then He was traveling from town to town and from village to village, teaching and making His way toward Jerusalem.
Now the apostles returned and told Jesus all that they had done. Then He took them and privately retired to a town called Bethsaida.
It would be better for him to have a millstone hung around his neck, and he be hurled into the sea, than for him to ensnare one of these lowly ones.
I tell you, everyone who owns me before men the Son of Man will own before the angels of God;
Just so, I tell you, there is joy among the angels of God over one sinful person who repents!"
Sell your property and give to charity. Provide for yourselves purses that will never wear out, riches that never fail in heaven, where a thief cannot come near nor a moth destroy,
Now He was driving a dumb demon out of a man, and when the demon went out of him, the dumb man spoke. The crowds were astonished.
and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary, who was called Mary of Magdala, out of whom seven demons had gone,
So they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
"O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! The city that continues to murder the prophets, and to stone those who are sent to her, how often I have yearned to gather your children around me, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings. But you refused!
Now while He was in one of the towns, a man covered with leprosy saw Jesus and fell on his face and begged Him, saying, "Lord, if you choose to, you can cure me."
Then He said to them, "Why is it that you were searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"
As the day began to decline, the Twelve came up and said to Him, "Send the crowd off to the villages and farms around, to get lodging and to find food there, for we are in a destitute place here."
So after this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant, and she kept herself in seclusion for five months, saying,
For whoever is ashamed of me and my teaching, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him, when He comes back in all the splendor of His Father and of the holy angels.
Just at that time some Pharisees came up and said to Him, "Get out at once! Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you!"
but I have prayed especially for you that your own faith may not utterly fail. And you yourself, after you have turned, must strengthen your brothers."
They asked Him, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and show no favors to anyone, but teach the way of God honestly.
And Joseph too went up from Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to the town of David in Judea called Bethlehem, because he was a descendant of the house and family of David,
Now He took the Twelve aside and said to them, "Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.
Now while some people were talking about the temple, how it was decorated with beautiful stones and votive-offerings, He said,
So He came down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee. And He continued to teach them on the Sabbath,
Then He said to them, "You are the men who exhibit your uprightness before the public, but God knows your hearts. For what stands high in the sight of men is detestable in the sight of God.
Then He began to speak to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled here in your hearing."
Do you think that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not so at all, but rather discord.
Now if I with Beelzebub's help am driving the demons out, with whose help do your sons drive them out?
"What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep, and if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and continue to look for the lost one until he finds it?
Then some of the Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection, came up and asked Him,
Now as the crowds continued to throng upon Him, He began to say: "This is a wicked age. It is looking for a spectacular sign, but none will be given it but the sign of Jonah.
But He said to them, "Give them something to eat yourselves." Then they said, "We have only five loaves and two fish, unless we go ourselves and buy food for all these people."
"You must struggle on to get in through the narrow door, for I tell you, many will try to get in, but will not succeed,
Stay on at the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the workman deserves his support. Do not keep moving about from house to house.
Whoever does not persevere in carrying his own cross and thus following after me, cannot be a disciple of mine.
"Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one of them, does not light a lamp and sweep the house, and look carefully until she finds it?
Then He glanced around at them all and said to him, "Put out your hand." And he did so, and his hand was at once completely restored.
Then he answered, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced, even if someone rises from the dead.'"
But I will show you whom to fear. Fear Him who, after killing you, has power to hurl you down to the pit; yes, I tell you, fear Him.
Now as a great crowd was coming together and people were coming to Him from one town after another, He said by way of a story:
"Then the master said to his slave, 'Go out on the roads and by the hedges and make the people come in, so that my house may be filled.
Then He proceeded to say to the man who invited Him: "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, stop the social custom of inviting your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your rich neighbors, for they may invite you in return and so you will be repaid.
So you too, when you do all that you are ordered to do, say, 'We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done.'"
But some of them said, "It is with the help of Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that He is driving the demons out."
for the Scripture says, 'He will give His angels directions about you, to protect you,'
So he released the man who had been put in prison for riot and murder, whom they continued to demand, but turned Jesus over to their will.
Then he said, 'This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and in them I will store all my grains and my goods.
But He knew what they were thinking, and so said to them, "Any kingdom that is not united is in the process of destruction, and one house falls after another.
Then they approached the village to which they were going, and He acted as though He were going on farther,
For there were about five thousand men. So He said to His disciples, "Have them sit down in reclining groups of fifty each."
Now the axe is already lying at the roots of the trees. Every tree, then, that fails to bear good fruit is to be cut down and thrown into the fire."
And at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to the invited guests, 'Come, for it is now ready.'
Even while He was saying this, His opponents were blushing with shame, but all the people were rejoicing over all the glorious things that were being done by Him.
As He approached the gate of the town, look, there was being carried out a dead man, his mother's only son, and she was a widow! A considerable crowd of townspeople were with her.
But she was agitated at what he said, and began to ponder what this greeting meant.
But you are not to do so. On the contrary, the greatest among you must be like the youngest and the leader as the servant.
and he was always craving to get a square meal from the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Yes, the very dogs used to come and lick his sores.
So it is with the man who continues to pile up possessions for himself, and is not rich in God."
He said to him, 'On the ground of what you say I will sentence you, you wicked slave! You knew that I was a stern man, that I picked up what I did not put down, and reaped what I did not sow.
For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to get into the kingdom of God."
Then He took the five loaves and two fish and looked up to heaven and blessed them, and He broke them in pieces and gave them to the disciples to pass on to the people.
Now when the Lord saw her, His heart was moved with pity for her, and so He said to her, "Stop weeping."
But they all in the same attitude began to excuse themselves. The first one said, 'I have just bought a piece of land and I must go and look it over. Please excuse me.'
So why did you not put my money into the bank? In that case, when I came back I could have gotten interest on my principal.'
and, 'They will bear you up on their hands, so that you will never strike your foot against a stone.'"
And if Satan is really disunited, how can his kingdom last? Yet you say that I am driving the demons out with Beelzebub's help.
And if anyone asks you why you are untying it, you are to answer, 'The Lord needs it.'"
For at the haul of fish that they had made, bewildering amazement had seized him and all his men,
Just think of the ravens! For they neither sow nor reap, they have no storehouses nor barns, and yet God continues to feed them. How much more are you worth than the birds!
And they all ate and had aplenty, and what they had left over was taken up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
It is like yeast which a woman took and hid in a bushel of flour until it all had risen."
but they earnestly urged Him, and said, "Stop and stay with us, for it is getting toward evening and the day is nearly spent." So He went in to stay with them.
After the devil had finished every sort of temptation, he left Him till another time.
Then even the tax-collectors came to be baptized, and said to him, "Teacher, what ought we to do?"
Now if God so gorgeously dresses the wild grass which today is green but tomorrow is tossed into the furnace, how much more surely will He clothe you, O you with little faith?
Now a priest happened to be going that way, but when he saw him, he went by on the other side of the road.
So after they had brought the boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.
Then He went up and touched the hearse and the bearers stopped; and He said, "Young man, I tell you, arise."
So he said to the bystanders, 'Take the twenty dollars away from him and give it to the man who has the two hundred.'
Then He turned to His disciples when they were alone, and said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you are seeing.
So the slave returned and reported these answers to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his slave, 'Hurry out into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor, the maimed, the crippled, and the blind.'
So He reached out His hand and touched him, saying, "I do choose to; be cured." And at once the leprosy left him.
So all the people were trying to touch Him, because power continued to go forth from Him and to cure them all.
For I tell you, many prophets and kings have wished to see what you are seeing, but they did not, and to hear what you are hearing, but they did not."
The men of Nineveh will rise at the judgment with the men of this age and will condemn them, for they turned to the message preached by Jonah, and yet One who is more than Jonah is here.
His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your opinion; I no longer deserve to be called your son; just treat me like one of your hired men.'
Just think of how the lilies grow. They do not toil nor spin. But, I tell you, not even Solomon, in all his splendor, was ever dressed like one of them.
For I tell you, not one of those people who were invited shall get a taste of my dinner!'"
Then the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
So they hurried to the place and found Joseph and Mary; also the baby lying in the manger.
So they could not use what he said before the people, and in astonishment at His answer they said no more.
He said that the Son of Man had to be turned over to wicked men and crucified, but was to rise again on the third day."
They answered, "John the Baptist; though others say Elijah, and still others that one of the ancient prophets has come back to life."
But if you go into any town and they do not welcome you, go out into the streets and say,
Then their eyes were instantly opened and they recognized Him, and at once He vanished from them.
Meanwhile He began to teach in their synagogues, and was continuously receiving praise from all.
So when Jesus saw it, He said, "How hard it is for those who have money to get into the kingdom of God!
And Jesus answered him, "It has been said, 'You must not try the Lord your God.'"
Then He said to His disciples, "The time will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.
So awe seized them all, and they began to praise God, saying, "A great prophet has appeared among us!" and, "God has visited His people!"
But when a man stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he strips him of all his arms on which he relied, and distributes his goods as spoils.
At that very hour He cured many people of diseases and scourges and evil spirits, and graciously granted sight to many blind persons.
But He particularly warned, yea, even commanded, them not to tell this to anybody,
So when you see these things taking place, you must understand that the kingdom of God is near.
I no longer deserve to be called your son; just treat me like one of your hired men."'
For there is nothing hidden which shall not come out into the open, and nothing kept secret which shall not be known and come to light.
But the news about Him continued to spread, and great crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be cured of their diseases.
Then it goes and gets seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and make their home there, and so the end of that man is worse than the beginning."
for just as when the lightning flashes, it shines from one end of the sky to the other, so will the Son of Man be when He comes.
Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be completely satisfied! Blessed are you who are weeping now, for you will laugh!
So He said to them, "I solemnly say to you, there is no one who has given up home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the kingdom of God,
Which one, indeed, is the greater, the guest at the table or the servant who waits on him? Is it not the guest at the table? But I am among you as the servant who waits on you.
But Jesus turned to the women and said, "Women of Jerusalem, stop weeping for me, but continue to weep for yourselves and for your children.
For all these are the very things the nations of the world are greedily trying to get, and surely your Father well knows that you need them.
For I tell you, what has been written about me must be fulfilled: 'He was classed with the outlaws.' Yes, that saying about me has its fulfillment."
But Peter said to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go even to prison and to death with you!"
Then He warned him not to tell anybody, but rather He said, "Go, show yourself to the priest, and, to prove it to the people, make the offering for your purification, just as Moses prescribed."
when once the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand on the outside and to knock on the door again and again and say, 'Lord, open it for us'; but He will answer, 'I do not know where you come from.'
But Herod the governor, because he was repeatedly reproved by him for Herodias his brother's wife, and for all the wicked deeds that Herod had done,
He has done mighty deeds with His arm. He has scattered those that are proud in the purpose of their hearts.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not die without seeing the Lord's Messiah.
Then at once he got up before them all, picked up the pallet on which he had been lying, and went off home, giving praise to God.
So it was reported to Him, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside; they want to see you."
And all who heard it were astounded at what was told them by the shepherds,
Jesus answered them, "Did you never read what David did, when he and his soldiers became hungry?
So he became angry and would not go into the house. Then his father came out and began to plead with him.
So with many and varied exhortations John continued to proclaim the good news to the people.
When they saw this, they informed them of the story that had been told about this child.
Burst into joy on that day and leap for ecstasy, for your reward will be rich in heaven; for this is the way your forefathers used to treat the prophets.
But when John's messengers had gone, He began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the desert to gaze at? A reed that is tossed to and fro by the wind?
'I tell you, the man who gets will have more given to him, but the man who does not get will have even what he has taken away from him!
and to offer the sacrifice in accordance with what is specified in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons."
"Show me a twenty-cent coin. Whose picture and title does it bear?" They answered, "Caesar's."
For He will be turned over to the heathen and sport made of Him, He will be insulted and spit upon,
And another portion fell in rich soil and grew and yielded a crop of a hundredfold." As He said this, He exclaimed, "Let him who has ears to hear with, listen!"
How he went into the house of God and took and ate the sacred loaves, which it was against the law for anyone to eat except the priests, and gave some to his soldiers?"
So the men went to Him and said, "John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, 'Are you the One who was to come, or should we continue to look for someone else?'"
Then the slave said, 'Sir, what you ordered has been done, and still there is room.'
because what you have spoken in darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in people's ears, behind closed doors, will be proclaimed from the housetops.
A curse on you who live in luxury now, for you will be hungry. A curse on you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
But the scribes and the Pharisees began to argue, saying, "Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
People continued to eat, drink, marry, and be married, right up to the day when Noah went into the ark, and the Flood came and destroyed them all.
Then the shepherds went back continuing to give glory and praise to God for all that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told them.
It is like a mustard seed which a man took and dropped in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the wild birds roosted in its branches."
So you must stop seeking what to eat and what to drink, and must stop being in suspense about these things.
When you see them shooting forth their buds, you know of yourselves that summer now is near.
Then the devil said to Him, "If you are God's Son, order this stone to turn to a loaf of bread."
Then He rolled up the roll and gave it back to the attendant and took His seat. Now the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were gazing at Him.
But He said, "I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow today before you deny three times that you know me!"
Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I am on my way to try them. Please excuse me.'
But he pleaded, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone went to them from the dead, they would repent.'
So He said to them, "Take nothing with you for your journey, no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, nor even have two shirts.
Then Peter said to Him, "We have left our very own, homes and all, and have followed you."
But his father said to his slaves, 'Bring out at once a robe, yes, the finest one, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet;
And some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is against the law to do on the Sabbath?"
He said to him, "You have answered correctly. Continue to do this, and you will live."
Lest, perchance, after he has laid the foundation but cannot complete the building, all who see it begin to make sport of him,
So John called two of them to him and sent them to the Lord, to ask, "Are you the One who was to come, or should we continue to look for someone else?"
There was a Roman captain who had a slave that was very dear to him, and he was sick and at the point of death,
So under the Spirit's guidance he went into the temple, and when the parents brought the child Jesus there to do for Him as the custom of the law required,
Do not carry a purse, a bag, or shoes, and do not stop to say 'Good morning' to anybody on the road.
As soon as He stepped out upon the shore, there met Him a man from town, who was under the power of demons; and for a long time he had worn no clothes, and did not stay in a house but in tombs.
Then they arrested Him and led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest. Peter was following at a distance.
When he saw Jesus, he screamed and flung himself down before Him, and said in a loud voice, "What do you want of me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you not to torture me!"
and they were so startled and terror-stricken that they were beginning to think that they saw a ghost.
For a time is coming when people will say, 'Happy are the women who are childless, and the women who have never borne and nursed babies!'
and the very day Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.
Now some men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were trying to get him in and lay him before Jesus.
And all the people, even the tax-collectors, when they heard him, vindicated the righteous requirements of God by submitting to John's baptism,
The man who is on the roof of his house that day, and his goods in the house, must not come down to carry them out; and the man in the field, too, must not turn back.
But He will say to you, 'I do not know where you come from. Go away from me, all you wrongdoers!'
Yes, the very hairs on your heads have all been counted by God! Stop being afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Then He answered them, "My mother and my brothers are those who listen to God's message and practice it."
the son of Johanan, the son of Resa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Salathiel, the son of Neri,
and they rose up and drove Him out of town and took Him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, to hurl Him down the cliff.
So they came to Him and woke Him up, and said, "Master, Master, we are perishing? Then He aroused Himself and reproved the wind and the surge of the water, and they stopped at once and instantly there came a calm.
"Teacher, Moses wrote for us a law that, if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no child, the man should take the widow and raise up a family for his brother.
said, "Go on to the village in front of you, in which, just as you enter, you will find a colt tied, which no man has ever yet ridden. Untie it and bring it here to me.
And there were many lepers in Israel in Elisha's time, and yet not one of them was cured except Naaman the Syrian."
Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.'
But to show you that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth" -- turning to the man who was paralyzed, He said to him, "Get up, pick up your pallet, and go home."

Whoever tries to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will preserve it.

Another portion of them fell upon the rock, and as soon as they sprang up, they withered, because they had no moisture.
And if you go into any town and they welcome you, continue to eat what is offered you,
Then He saw two boats lying up on the shore of the lake, but the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets.
But he answered his father, 'See! I have served you all these years and have never disobeyed a command of yours, but you have never given me even a kid, so that I could celebrate with my friends.
Then all the people in the synagogue, on hearing these things, were filled with fury,
If not, what did you go out there to see? A man dressed in silks and satins? No. People who dress gorgeously and live luxuriously are found in royal palaces.
and yet Elijah was not sent to a single one of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.
Now the Pharisees and their scribes were grumbling at His disciples, and were saying, "Why are you eating and drinking with tax-collectors and notorious sinners?"

Simon answered, "We have toiled all night and caught nothing, but since you tell me to do so, I will set the nets again."

Then Levi gave a great reception for Him in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax-collectors and others who were at table with them.
But if I by the finger of God am driving the demons out, then the kingdom of God has come to you.
Then they asked Him, "Where, Lord, will this be?" And He said to them, "Wherever there is carrion the vultures will flock."
And men will say to you, 'Look! There he is!' or, 'Look! Here He is!' Do not start in pursuit of Him,
Now as they were sailing along, He fell off to sleep. But a furious squall of wind rushed down upon the lake, and they were filling up and were in impending peril.
But the other one reproved him and said, "Do you not fear even God when you are suffering the same penalty?
Still another portion fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up with them and choked them out.
Now when He reached the spot, He said to them, "Continue to pray that you may not be subjected to temptation."
Whenever you go to a house for headquarters, first say, 'Peace to this household.'
"Or what king, when he is going to make an attack on another king, does not first sit down and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand soldiers to meet the other king who is coming against him with twenty thousand?
For He was commanding the foul spirit to get out of the man. For on many occasions it had seized him, and repeatedly he had been fastened with chains and fetters under constant guard, and yet he would snap his bonds, and the demon would drive him into desert places.
while all the people would rise early in the mornings and come to listen to Him in the temple.
the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,
And as they could not find a way because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his pallet through the tiles, among the people right in front of Jesus.
Jesus saw that they were arguing, and answered them: "Why are you arguing so in your hearts?
Now during the days He continued to teach in the temple, but He would go out and spend the nights on the hill called the Mount of Olives;
So they went to Jesus and continued to urge Him earnestly, saying, "He deserves that you do this for him,
When the captain heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to Him, to ask Him to come and bring his slave safe through the illness.
Then they continued to beg Him not to order them to go off to the bottomless pit.
Which is easier, to say 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say 'Get up and start walking'?
For everyone who keeps on asking, receives; and the one who keeps on seeking, finds; and to the one who keeps on knocking, the door will open.
The queen of the south will rise at the judgment with the men of this age and will condemn them, for she came from the very ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom; and yet, One who is more than Solomon is here.
And while they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the colt?"
the son of Jesus, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,
Then He said to them, "Where is your faith?" But they were frightened and astounded, and continued to say to one another, "Who can He be? For He gives orders even to the winds and the water, and they obey Him."
Then Jesus started to go with them. But when He was not far from the house, the captain sent friends to say to Him, "My Lord, stop troubling yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.
Then an overwhelming wonder seized them all and they began to give praise to God. They were filled with awe and continued to say, "We have seen unthinkable wonders today!"
So He got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to push out a little from the shore. Then He sat down and continued to teach the crowds from the boat.
(He was a man who had been put in prison for a riot that had occurred in the city and for murder.)
If not, then what did you go out there to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is far more than a prophet.
the son of Symeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,
and then they will flog Him and kill Him, but on the third day He will rise again."
So he went to him and dressed his wounds by pouring oil and wine upon them, and then he put him on his donkey and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,
the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,
And if anyone there loves peace, your peace will come upon him; but if not, it will come back to you.
And so they set out and went from village to village, telling the good news and curing people everywhere.
He said to him, 'Your brother has come back, and your father has killed the fattening calf, because he has gotten him back safe and sound.'
And when you leave that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a protest against all the people who do not welcome you."
And we are suffering it justly, for we are getting our deserts for what we have done, but this man has done nothing wrong."
And if he cannot, while the other is still far away, he sends envoys and asks for terms of peace.
have handed them down to us, I too, most excellent Theophilus, because I have carefully investigated them all from the start, have felt impressed to write them out in order for you
So Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" And he answered, "Legion!" For many demons had gone into him.
And while He was praying, the look on His face changed, and His clothes turned dazzling white.
And so I did not deem myself worthy even to come to you. But simply speak the word, and let my servant-boy be cured.
So Herod said, "John I beheaded, but who can this be about whom I hear such reports?" So he was trying to see Him.
Now the child continued to grow and to gain strength in the Spirit, and he lived in the desert until the day when he announced himself to Israel.
As He was approaching Jericho, a blind man chanced to be sitting by the roadside begging.
For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be a sign to this age.
And so there are those now last who will be first then, and there are those now first who will then be last."
who will not receive in return many times more in this world, and in the next eternal life."
Then they threw their coats upon it and mounted Jesus upon it. As He was going on, the people continued to spread their coats under Him on the road.
Then Jesus said to him: "Once a man was giving a great dinner and invited many people to it.
as He said, "The Son of Man has to endure great suffering and be disowned by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes, and be put to death but be raised to life on the third day."
Blessed are you when people hate you and exclude you and denounce you, and spurn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.
But those who were marching in front reproved him and told him to keep quiet, but he cried out all the louder, "O Son of David, do pity me!"
But I must continue on my way, for it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside Jerusalem.'
There you will weep and grind your teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves being driven away on the outside.
Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things in it,
And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful, thoughtful manager whom his master will put in charge of his household, to give out the supplies at the proper time?
Now your house is abandoned to its fate! And I tell you, you will never see me again until you say, 'Blessed be He who comes in the name of the Lord!'"
So I tell you, make friends by the right use of your money, which so easily tends to wrongdoing, so that when it fails, your friends may welcome you to the eternal dwellings.
Then they themselves began to tell what had occurred on the road, and how He was recognized by them when He broke the loaf in pieces.
Then Zaccheus got up and said to the Lord, "Listen, Lord! I now give to the poor half of my property, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay him back four times as much."
"When the foul spirit goes out of a man, it wanders about in deserts in search for rest, and since it finds none, it says, 'I will go back to my house which I left.'
And He said to them, "I have heartily desired to eat this Passover supper with you before I suffer.
the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,
"Once there was in a city a judge who had no reverence for God nor respect for men.
When day came, He called His disciples to Him, and selected from them twelve whom He also named apostles:
And he went all over the Jordan valley, preaching a baptism conditioned on repentance to obtain the forgiveness of sins,
Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the council, a good and upright man,
When He noticed how the guests were picking out the best places, He told them the following story:
Then He went on to tell the people the following story: "Once upon a time a man planted a vineyard and leased it to tenant farmers, and then went abroad for a long stay.
A pupil is not better than his teacher, but everyone when fully trained will be like his teacher.
by others that Elijah had appeared, and by still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life.
Then He rose to leave the synagogue, and He went to Simon's house. And Simon's mother-in-law was in the grip of a burning fever; so they asked Him about her.
Are not sparrows sold five for two cents? And yet not one of them is forgotten by God!
Produce, then, fruit that is consistent with the repentance that you profess, and do not even begin to say within yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our forefather,' for I tell you, God can raise up descendants for Abraham even out of these stones.
Just as He was saying this, a woman in the crowd lifted her voice and said, "Blessed is the mother who bore you and nursed you!"
Now as Jesus was returning, the crowd welcomed Him, for they were all expecting Him.
But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you must name him John.
"Nobody lights a lamp and then covers it with a pot or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light.
And so He answered them, "Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind are seeing and the crippled are walking, the lepers are being healed and the deaf are hearing, the dead are being raised and the poor are having the good news preached to them.
Into whatever house you go, stay there and continue to go out from it as headquarters.
So He went on to say, "What is the kingdom of God like? To what may I compare it?
So He said, "You are granted the privilege of knowing the secrets of the kingdom of God, but to others they are told in stories, so that they may look and not see, may hear and not understand.
So He said: "Once upon a time a man of noble birth went off to a distant country to get for himself a kingdom and then return.
The Pharisee stood and said this self-centered prayer, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of men, robbers, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax-collector.
Then He received a cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and share it among you,
And will not God give justice and protection to His chosen people who continue to cry to Him day and night, since He is so patient with them?
And so the Pharisees and scribes continually grumbled, and said, "This fellow is welcoming notorious sinners, and even eating with them."
So He told them the following story:
"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax-collector.
But before all this takes place, people will arrest you and persecute you, and turn you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake.
All things have been entrusted to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is but the Father, and who the Father is but the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to make Him known."
His mother and His brothers came to see Him, but they could not get in touch with Him, on account of the crowd.
But He said, "Yes, but better still, blessed are those who listen to God's message and practice it!"
Then suddenly there appeared with the angel a throng of the heavenly host, praising God and saying:
Salt is good, but if salt itself loses its strength, how can that strength be restored?
But Jesus answered him, "The Scripture says, 'You must worship the Lord your God, and serve Him alone.'"
to a virgin there engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
Then he said, 'For this reason, I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house
So he got up and went to his father. But, while he was still a long way off, his father saw him, and his heart was moved with pity for him, and he ran and fell on his neck, and kissed him affectionately.
The roll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him, and He unrolled it and found the place where it was written:
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
Then He told them a story: "Can one blind man lead another? Will they not both fall into the ditch?
They were Mary of Magdala and Joanna, and Mary, James's mother, who, with the other women, reported these things to the apostles.
Then he said to him, 'My child, you have been with me all the time, and all I have is yours.
People will come from east and west, from north and south, and take their seats at the feast in the kingdom of God.
Here there was a man named Zaccheus, who was tax-commissioner of the district, and he was a rich man too.
Now is there a father among you who, if his son asks him for a fish, will give him a snake instead?
Therefore, I tell you, her sins, as many as they are, are forgiven, for she has loved me so much. But the one who has little to be forgiven loves me little."
So while they were still disbelieving for sheer joy and still wondering about it, He asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?"
So they all began to speak well of Him and to wonder at the gracious words that fell from His lips, and yet they continued to say, "Is He not Joseph's son?"
So you, too, must always be ready, for at an hour that you are not expecting, the Son of Man will come."
Then they will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud in overwhelming power and splendor.
For what benefit will it be to a man to gain the whole world and lose or forfeit himself?
and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who does us wrong, and do not let us be subjected to temptation.'"
The angel answered him, "I am Gabriel; I stand in the very presence of God. I have been sent to talk with you and to tell you this good news.
And his master praised the dishonest manager, because he acted with shrewd business sense, for the men of the world act with more business sense toward their fellows than the men who enjoy spiritual light.
And suppose he answers from inside, 'Stop bothering me; the door is now locked, and my children are packed about me in bed; I cannot get up and give you any.'
But a curse on you who are rich, for you are now receiving your comforts in full.
Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and thus to enter into His glory?"
Or those eighteen people at Siloam on whom the tower fell and whom it crushed to death, do you think that they were offenders worse than all the rest of the people who live in Jerusalem?
and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many other women, who continued to contribute to their needs out of their personal means.
After that they said to Him, "John's disciples rigidly practice fasting and offering up prayers; so do the Pharisees, but your disciples keep right on eating and drinking."
So he said to him, 'Well done, my good slave! Because you have proven dependable in a very small business, be governor of ten cities!'
But the portion in rich soil illustrates those who listen to the message, keep it in good and honest hearts, and in patience yield fruit.
Then He answered them, "Do you think, because these Galileans suffered like this, that they were worse sinners than all the rest of the Galileans?
To the man who strikes you on one cheek, offer him the other too; and from the man who takes away your coat, do not keep back your shirt either,
for a friend of mine has just come to my house on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him to eat.'
But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the heaven was closed for three years and a half, and there was a great famine over all the land,
and took her stand behind Him at His feet, continually weeping. Then she began to wet His feet with her tears, but she continued to wipe them off with the hair of her head, and she kept right on kissing His feet with affection and anointing them with the perfume.
The portion of them on the rock illustrates those who accept the message, bubbling over with joy when they first hear it, but it takes no real root. They believe for awhile, but in the time of testing they fall away.
Even if he sins against you seven times in a day and seven times turns to you and says, 'I am sorry,' you must forgive him."
(for I have five brothers) to warn them, that they too may not come to this place of torture.'
This is why the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will persecute';
When He approached Bethphage and Bethany by the hill called the Mount of Olives, He sent on two of His disciples, and
The Son of Man has come eating and drinking with others, and yet you say, 'Just look at Him! A glutton and a wine-drinker, an intimate friend of tax-collectors and notorious sinners!'
who appeared in splendor and were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
Because the heart of our God is merciful. And so the day will dawn upon us from on high,
So he called and said, 'Father Abraham, take pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool off my tongue, because I am ceaselessly tortured in this flame.'
Then an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, so that they were fearfully frightened.
For the Son of Man is going away, as it has been divinely decreed, but a curse will be on that man by whom He is betrayed!"
Now they were both upright in the sight of God, walking without reproach in all the Lord's commands and requirements.
But one of them, when he saw that he was cured, came back, praising God with a loud voice,
When the disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to bid fire come down from heaven and consume them?"
One day while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the good news, the high priests and the scribes, together with the elders, took a stand against Him,
But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul is to be demanded of you. Then who will have all that you have prepared?'
so I confer on you the privilege of eating and drinking at my table in my kingdom and of sitting on thrones and judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
He has satisfied the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.
He said to them, "Doubtless you will quote this proverb to me, 'Doctor, cure yourself! Do the things here in your hometown that we hear you did in Capernaum.'"
For they cannot die again. They are like the angels, and since they are reborn in the resurrection, are children of God.
There was a woman in the town who was a social outcast, and when she learned that He was taking dinner at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster bottle of perfume
When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' feet and said, "Leave me, Lord, because I am a sinful man."
On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they tried to name him Zechariah, after his father.
Then Symeon gave them his blessing, and said to Mary, the child's mother, "This child is destined to bring the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign continuously disputed --
But Satan entered into Judas, who is called Iscariot, who belonged to the circle of the Twelve.
And after three days they finally found Him in the temple sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
But be sure of this, that if the master of the house had known what time the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
Then people will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us up!'
Then He told them a short story: "No one tears a piece from a new coat and puts it on an old one; or if he does, he will tear the new one too, and the patch from the new coat will not match the old one.
And the portion of them falling among the thorns illustrates those who hear it, but as soon as they pass on they are choked out by the worries and wealth and pleasures of life, and thus yield no mature fruit.
And as they were being perplexed about this, two men in dazzling robes suddenly took their stand beside them.
but those who are considered worthy to attain that other world and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are married.
"What man among you, if he has a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he comes in from the field, 'Come at once and take your seat at the table,'
yea, a sword will pierce your heart -- so that the secret purposes of many hearts will be revealed."
In the meantime, an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right of the altar of incense.
When Jesus heard this, He said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell everything you have, and distribute the money among the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come back and follow me."
But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees have the habit of cleaning the outside of your cups and dishes, but inside you yourselves are full of greed and wickedness.
Here they began to make the following charges against Him: "We have found this fellow corrupting our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar and claiming to be a king himself."
Then some soldiers too were asking him, "What ought we too to do?" So he said to them, "Never extort money from anyone, never make a false accusation, and always be satisfied with your wages."
So He said, "You must take care not to be misled about it! For many will come bearing the name of Messiah, and saying, 'I am He,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not go after them.
[Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb, and stooped down and saw the linen clothes but nothing else. Then he went home wondering at what had taken place.]
Then Pilate said to the high priests and crowds, "I do not find anything blameworthy in this man."
Then the Lord said to them, "If you had faith that grows like a mustard seed, you might have been saying to this mulberry tree, 'Pull yourself up by the roots and plant yourself in the sea,' and it would have obeyed you!
I tell you, although he will not get up and give you any because he is your friend, yet because of your persistence he will get up and give you all your needs.
A curse on you when everyone speaks well of you, for this is the way their forefathers used to treat the false prophets.
I tell you, this man, and not the other, went back home forgiven and accepted by God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Sala, the son of Nahshon,
So they closely watched and sent spies who pretended to be upright men, to catch Him in His conversation, so as to turn Him over to the power and authority of the governor.
Now the Pharisees who were lovers of money had been listening to all this, and they began to ridicule Him.
There was following Him also a vast throng of the people and of women who were beating their breasts and lamenting Him.
Now when they are bringing you before the synagogues or the magistrates or the authorities, never worry about how to defend yourselves, or what to say,
As soon as day came, the elders of the people, the high priests, and the scribes assembled, and brought Him back before their council, and said,
and said: "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven and praise on high!"
There is nothing covered up that will not be uncovered, nor secret that will not be made known;
"For there never is a healthy tree that bears poor fruit, nor a sickly tree that bears good fruit.
Now Herod the governor heard of all that was taking place, and he continued to be puzzled over the reports -- by some that John had risen from the dead,
A curse on you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to the door of knowledge! You did not go in yourselves, and you kept out those who tried to get in."
Then He told them this story: "A man had a fig tree planted by his vineyard, and he kept going and looking for figs on it, but did not find any.
and be like men waiting for their master when he comes home from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks, they at once may open the door for him.
When the captain saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, "He certainly was an innocent man!"
Now a controversy sprang up among them as to which of them might be the greatest.
for my eyes have seen your Salvation,
Then Pilate asked Him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" And He answered him, "Yes, I am."
Meanwhile, the people stood looking on. Even the members of the council were scoffing at Him and saying, "He saved others, let Him now save Himself, if He really is the Christ of God, His Chosen One!"
So he called the manager to him and said, 'What is this that I am hearing about you? Balance your accounts and show how you are conducting my affairs, for you cannot be manager any longer.'
Then John answered, "Master, we saw a man driving out demons by the use of your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not belong to our followers."
And listen! your relative, Elizabeth, has herself too become pregnant, although she is old, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
Then he came to himself and said, 'How many of my father's hired men have more to eat than they need, and here I am dying of hunger!
and said: "If today you yourself had only known the conditions of peace! But now they are hidden from you.
When He stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Push out into deep water, and set your nets for a haul."
Then He said to them, "When I sent you out without purse or bag or shoes, you did not need anything, did you?" They answered, "Nothing at all."
Then when the angel left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us now go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has told us."
But He said to them: "Go and tell that fox, 'Here I am, driving out demons and performing cures, today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will finish these tasks.
And the devil said to Him, "I will give you all this power and all their splendor, for it has been turned over to me, and I give it to anyone I please.
the son of Serug, the son of Ragau, the son of Peleg, the son of Heber, the son of Shelah,
As day broke He left the house and went to a lonely spot, and the crowds continued to look for Him; they overtook Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them.
while He was being tempted by the devil. During that time He ate nothing, and so at the end of it He felt hungry.
So take care how you listen, for whoever gets more will have more given to him, and whoever does not get more will have even what he thinks he has taken away from him."
But there is actual need of few things, really of only one thing. For Mary has chosen the good portion which must not be taken away from her."
But Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, even wild birds have roosts, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."
She was very old; from girlhood she had lived seven years with a husband, and now had been a widow eighty years. She never left the temple, but continued to worship all day and all night with fastings and prayers.
While He was still speaking, look! a crowd had come up, and Judas, one of the Twelve, was their guide; and he stepped up to Jesus to kiss Him.
His winnowing-fork is in His hand, and He will clean out His threshing-floor, and store His wheat in His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with fire inextinguishable."
On another Sabbath He found Himself in the synagogue teaching; and there was there a man whose right hand was withered.
And He said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, at once you say, 'It is going to rain,' and it does.
But they did not understand about these things, and this statement was an insoluble riddle to them; they did not even begin to grasp what He meant.
It was so in the time of Lot; people continued to eat, drink, buy, sell, plant, and build;
as well as James and John, Zebedee's sons, who were Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Stop being afraid; from now on you will be catching men."
for these are the days of vengeance when all that is written in the Scriptures will be fulfilled.
and there was a woman there who for eighteen years had had a disease caused by a spirit. She was bent double and could not straighten herself up at all.
Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this home, for he too is a real descendant of Abraham.
So the high priests and the scribes continued to seek how they might put Him to death, for they were afraid of the people.
Now when they had completed everything that was in accordance with the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.
By no means, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did."
But He said to them, "The kings of the heathen lord it over them and those who exercise authority over them are given the title of 'Benefactor.'
And so was it not right for this woman, a descendant of Abraham, whom Satan has for eighteen years kept bound, to be freed from this bond on the Sabbath?"
the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,
And when you hear of wars and tumults, never be panic-stricken. For this has to take place first, but the end will not come all at once."
He answered them, "The man who has two shirts must share with him who has none, and the man who has food must do the same."
So at once he saw again, and began to follow Him, giving thanks to God. And all the people saw it and gave praise to God.
As the sun was setting, all who had friends sick with various diseases brought them to Him. Then He continued to lay His hands upon them one by one and cured them.
The soldiers also made sport of Him as they continued to come up and offer Him vinegar,
For whoever chooses to save his lower life will lose his higher life, but whoever gives up his lower life for my sake will save his higher life.
And He Himself withdrew about a stone's throw from them, and after kneeling down He continued to pray,
Then Herod and his bodyguard treated Him with contempt and made sport of Him and put a gorgeous robe on Him and sent Him back to Pilate.
The Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and vexed about many things.
Then He said to them, "Which of you, if his son or ox falls into a well, will not at once pull him out on the Sabbath?"
Happy are those slaves whom the master, when he comes, will find on the watch for him. I solemnly say to you, he will tighten his belt and have them sit at table, and he will go around and wait on them.
as it is written in the sermon-book of the prophet Isaiah: "Here is a voice of one shouting in the desert, 'Get the road ready for the Lord, make the paths straight for Him.
"A sower went out to sow his seed. As he was sowing, some of the seed fell along the path, and were trodden down, and the wild birds ate them up.
He said, "The one who took pity on him." Jesus said to him, "Go and practice it yourself."
continue to bless those who curse you, and continue to pray for those who abuse you.
So He went back to Nazareth with them and continued to obey them. But His mother continued to treasure up all these sayings in her heart.
And after He had taken His place at table with them, He took the loaf and blessed it and broke it in pieces and handed it to them.
"Two men were in debt to a money-lender. One owed him a hundred dollars, the other ten.
There will be great earthquakes and pestilences and famines in various places, and there will be dreadful portents and awful signs in the sky.
for I will give you such wisdom of speech as all your opponents combined will not be able to resist and refute.
So He said to them, "But who do you, yourselves, say that I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ of God!"
But from today the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."
Now his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he uttered the following prophecy:
Then you will be happy, because they cannot repay you; you will be repaid at the resurrection of the upright."
But we just had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life, was lost and has been found.'"
[He is not here but has risen.] Remember what He told you while He was still in Galilee, when
When a strong man well armed keeps guard over his dwelling, his property is secure.
Because the women were so frightened and were turning their faces to the ground, they said to them, "Why are you looking among the dead for Him who is alive?
and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the Eleven and all the rest.
But when you give a reception, make it your habit to invite people that are poor, maimed, crippled, or blind.
But the report seemed to them to be nonsense, and so they continued to disbelieve the women.
I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how I am pressed with anguish till it is accomplished!
Peter said to Him, "Lord, do you mean this story for us, or is it for everybody?"
She had a sister named Mary who took her seat at the Lord's feet, and remained listening to His message.
And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and so they were rejoicing with her.
For instance, when you are on the way to court with your opponent, take the utmost pains on the way to get entirely rid of him, so that he may not rush you before the judge, and the judge turn you over to the sheriff, and the sheriff put you in prison.
to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."
And as He was going into one village, ten lepers met Him, who got up at some distance from Him,
Then He said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child on my account is welcoming me, and whoever welcomes me is welcoming Him who sent me; for the one who is lowliest among you all is really great."
for I tell you, I shall not after today drink the product of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
But Abraham said, 'My child, remember that you received in full your blessings in your lifetime, and Lazarus his hardships in his, but now he is continuously comforted here, while you are continuously tortured there.
Now if you practice loving only those who love you, what credit do you get for that? Why, even notorious sinners practice loving those who love them.
But He said to them, "Why are you so disturbed and why are doubts arising in your hearts?
Even demons came out of many people, shrieking and saying, "You are the Son of God!" But He reproved them and would not let them speak, because they knew that He was the Christ.
When He had said this, a Pharisee asked Him to lunch at his house, and He went in and took His place at table.
But we kept hoping that He was the One who was coming to set Israel free. Moreover, besides all this, it is now the third day since these things occurred.
I solemnly say to you, some of you who stand here will certainly live to see the kingdom of God."
But He glanced at them and said, "Then what does this Scripture mean: 'That stone which the builders threw away has now become the cornerstone'?
Now there was a man in the synagogue who was under the power of the spirit of a foul demon, and he screamed with a loud voice,
Then a voice came out of the cloud and said, "This is my Son, my Chosen One; continue to listen to Him!"
Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me perfectly good? No one is perfectly good but God Himself.
"Now his elder son was in the field. So, on coming in, as he came near the house, he heard music and dancing.
He said to another man, "Follow me." But he said, "Let me first go back and bury my father."
And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to make ready His ways,
Besides all this, between you and us there stands fixed a great chasm, so that those who want to cross from this side to you cannot, nor can they cross from your side to us.'
Your eye is the very lamp of your body. When your eye is sound, your whole body is full of light. But if your eye is unsound, your body is full of darkness.
I will get up and go to my father, and say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your opinion;
And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but no one who speaks abusively about the Holy Spirit will be forgiven.
The next day he took out a half dollar and handed it to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him, and on my way back I will repay you.'
Then I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Go on taking your ease; continue to eat, drink, and enjoy yourself."'
And he would not for a time, but afterward he said to himself, Though I have no reverence for God nor respect for men,
And He said to them, "What sort of things?" They answered Him, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who in the sight of God and of all the people became a prophet mighty in deed and word,
"I tell you, of all men born of women there is not one greater than John; and yet the one who is of least importance in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
"Ha! What do you want of us, Jesus, you Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are God's Holy One."
Not many days after that, the younger son got together all he had and went away to a distant country, and there he squandered all his property by living in dissipation.
And in that city there was a widow who continued to come to him and say, 'Give me justice and protection from my opponent.'
Why do you continue to look at the tiny speck in your brother's eye, but pay no attention to the heavy girder in your own eye?
For I tell you, I shall never again eat one until it finds its full fruition in the kingdom of God."
Whoever is not in partnership with me is against me, and whoever does not gather in partnership with me, scatters.
Then a woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, who could not be cured by anybody,
While I was among you day after day in the temple, you never laid a hand on me! But this is your opportunity, even the power which darkness gives you!"
So He was teaching daily in the temple, and the high priests and the scribes and the leading men of the people were trying to destroy Him,
Then Pilate called a meeting of the high priests, the leaders of the council, and the people,
But when this son of yours arrives, who has eaten up your property with immoral women, you have killed for him the fattening calf.'
And as Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, "Zaccheus, come down quickly! for today I must stop at your house."
to grant us deliverance from the dreaded hand of our foes, so that we could serve Him
So when the Pharisee who invited Him saw it, he said to himself, "If He were really a prophet, He would know who and of what character the woman is who is clinging to Him -- that she is a social outcast."
But Martha was getting worried about having to wait on them so much, so she came up suddenly and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the housework alone? Then tell her to take hold and help me."
men fainting with fear and apprehension of the things that are to come upon the world, for the powers of the sky will be shaken.
But that the dead are raised, even Moses at the bush has demonstrated, when he calls the Lord 'the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'
men who eat up widows' houses and to cover it up make long prayers! They will receive a much heavier sentence."
Those along the path illustrate those who hear it, but then the devil comes and carries off the message from their hearts, so that they may not believe it and be saved.
For every tree is known by its fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or gather grapes from a bramble-bush.
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against the men of this age.
and they will throw you and your children within you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know when God visited you."
Then He answered him, "Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but you go on and continue to spread the good news of the kingdom of God."
Practice giving to everyone who asks of you, and stop demanding back your goods from him who takes them away.
But all His acquaintances, and the women who used to follow Him from Galilee in a group, were standing at a distance looking on.
He said, "Yes, a curse on you experts in the law, too, because you load people down with loads too heavy to carry, and yet you do not touch the loads yourselves with one of your fingers!
Yes, you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and they will put some of you to death,
Now Herod was very glad to see Jesus, for he had been wanting to see Him for a long time on account of what he had heard about Him; also he was hoping to see some spectacular performance done by Him.
and with a loud shout she said: "Blessed are you among women, And blessed is your child!
So He sent Peter and John, saying to them, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover meal."
So the women, who had come with Jesus from Galilee, followed closely after Joseph and saw the tomb and how His body was laid there.
But they continued emphatically insisting, "He is exciting the people by teaching all over Judea. He started in Galilee and now He is here."
so He sent messengers before Him. Then they went on and entered into a Samaritan town, to make preparations for Him.
But they all together began to shout, "Away with this fellow, but let us have Barabbas released!
Then they asked Him, "Teacher, when will this be? And what is the sign that it is about to take place?"
And turning face to face with the woman He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came to your house; you did not give me any water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with tears and wiped them with her hair.
But when you are invited anywhere, go and take the lowest place, so that when your host comes in, he may say to you, 'My friend, come up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow-guests.
so that the blood of all the prophets that has been shed from the creation of the world may be charged against the men of this age --
I tell you, two men will be in the same bed that night; one will be taken, the other left.
So at once they got up and went back to Jerusalem and found the Eleven and their company all together,
"When you are invited by anyone to a wedding supper, never take the best place, for someone of greater distinction than you may have been invited,
Then the scribes and the high priests tried to arrest Him at that very hour, but they were afraid of the people, for they knew that He meant this story for them.
and they were completely astounded, because His message was spoken with authority.
for He has smiled upon His slave in her lowly station, for from this day all ages will count me happy!
And all the crowds who had come together for this sight, when they had seen what took place, returned to the city but continued to beat their breasts in grief.
So he said to the vine-dresser, 'Look here! for three years I have been coming to look for figs on this fig tree, and have not found any. Cut it down. Why waste the ground with it?'
But a Samaritan, while on a journey, came down to him, and when he saw him, his heart was moved with pity for him.
When His parents saw Him, they were utterly amazed, and yet His mother said to Him, "My child, why did you treat us so? Just see how your father and I, in agony of mind, have been searching for you!"
Just at that time she came up and began to give thanks to God and to speak about the child to all who were expecting the deliverance of Jerusalem.
Then He continued to say to them, "One nation will go to war with another, and one kingdom with another.
because this son of mine was dead and has come to life, was lost and has been found!' So they began to celebrate.
Which one of these three do you think proved himself a real neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands?"
So if you have not proved dependable in handling your ill-gotten riches, who will trust you with the true riches?
"You must store away in your memories these words, for the Son of Man is going to be turned over to the hands of men!"
He answered them, "Just after you enter the city, a man with a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters
He said to them, "Then pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and pay God what belongs to God!"
But dedicate once for all your inner self, and at once you will have everything clean.
But if that slave says to himself, my Master is not coming back for a long time, and begins to beat the men and women slaves, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
Blessed is she who has believed, for what is promised to her by the Lord will be fulfilled."
his master will come back some day when he is not expecting him, and at an hour of which he is not aware, and will cut him in two, and give him his share with the unfaithful.
And this is proof for you: You will find a baby wrapped up and lying in a manger."
Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter, and Peter was reminded of the word that the Lord had spoken to him, "Before a cock crows today, you will disown me three times."
But his citizens continued to hate him, and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We do not want this man to become king over us.'
Then some of our company went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Him."
And just as they were starting to leave Him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah" -- although he did not know what he was saying.
"I solemnly say to you, this generation will not pass away before all this takes place.
He is like a man who was building a house, who dug deep, and laid its foundation upon the rock; and when a flood came, the torrent burst upon that house but it could not shake it, because it was well built.
I solemnly say to you, Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God as a little child does, will never get into it at all."
Finally one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered Him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who has not heard of the things that have taken place there in these last days?"
in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the message of God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the desert.
and said to them, "You brought this man to me on a charge of turning the people from allegiance, and here in your presence I have examined Him and do not find Him guilty of the charges you make against Him.
Then he took it down from the cross and wrapped it in a linen sheet and laid it in a tomb hewn out of rock, where no one had yet been laid.
And as they were talking, and discussing these things, Jesus Himself came up near to them and continued to walk with them,
for all the rest of them made their contributions out of their surplus, but she out of her want dropped in all that she had to live on."
and all who heard them kept them in their hearts, and said, "What then is this child to be?" for the hand of the Lord was with him.
to give His people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins.
So a Levite likewise came down to the place, but when he saw him, he went by on the other side.
And if you ever lend to people expecting to get it back, what credit do you get for that? Even notorious sinners practice lending to one another, expecting to get it back in full.
"For John the Baptist came eating no bread and drinking no wine, and yet you say, 'He has a demon!'
But he answered, 'Leave it, sir, just one more year, till I dig around it and manure it.
How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me get that tiny speck out of your eye,' when you cannot see the girder in your own eye? You hypocrite! First get the girder out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly how to get out the tiny speck in your brother's eye.
So he went off and discussed with the high priests and captains of the temple how he could betray Him to them.
Amazement then seized them all and they continued to talk it over among themselves, and to say, "What does this message mean? For with authority and power He gives orders to foul spirits, and they come out."
No one lights a lamp and puts it in a cellar or under a peck-measure, but he puts it on the lampstand, that the people who come in may enjoy the light.
"Beware of the scribes who like to go about in long robes and love to be saluted with honor in public places, to be seated in the front seats in the synagogues, and to occupy the places of honor at banquets --
Then they all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" And He answered, "Yes, I am."
When He rose from His prayer, He went to the disciples and found them asleep from sorrow.
and when he reaches home he calls in his friends and neighbors, and says to them, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep!'
Now Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but all at once they became wide awake and saw His splendor and the two men who were standing with Him.
No one after drinking old wine wants new, for he says, 'The old is good enough.'"
The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' So he divided his property between them.
yet because this widow continues to bother me, I will give her justice and protection, so that she may not finally wear me out by her continual coming."
But Jesus said, "Permit me to go as far as this!" So He touched his ear and healed him.
So Herod and Pilate became personal friends that very day; they had been at enmity before.
the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Maleleel, the son of Cainan,
And His father and mother kept wondering at the things spoken by Symeon about Him.
and He said to them, "The Scripture says, 'And my house shall be a house of prayer,' but you have made it a cave for robbers."
Now at the resurrection which one's wife will the woman be? For the seven married her."
A curse on you, Chorazin! A curse on you, Bethsaida! For if the wonder-works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, long ago they would have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
They are like little children sitting in the market-place and calling to their fellows in the game: "'We played the wedding march for you, but you did not dance. We sang the funeral dirge, but you did not mourn.'
Then Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." "Teacher," said he, "go on and say it."
For a time is coming upon you when your enemies will throw up earthworks around you and surround you and hem you in on all sides,
Everyone who comes to me and continues to listen to my words and practices their teachings, I will show you whom he is like.
So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, and he sent him to his fields to feed hogs.
Then he asked for a writing-tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they were all astonished.
So he ran on ahead and climbed up in a mulberry tree, just to get a glimpse of Him, for Jesus was coming through on that street.
For David himself in the Book of Psalms says: 'The Lord has said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand,
Jesus said to him, "Stop hindering him, for the man who is not against you is for you."
Now he was trying to see Jesus to find out who He was, but he could not because of the crowd, as he was so small in stature.
A servant girl saw him sitting by the fire and fixed her eyes on him and said, "This fellow was with Him too."
He called in ten of his slaves and gave them twenty dollars apiece and told them to do business with his money while he was gone.
I know what I will do -- I will ask them to take me into their homes when I am removed from my position.
But Jesus reproved him, saying "Be quiet! Get out of him at once!" So the demon threw the man down in the midst of them and came out of him without doing him any harm.
He added, "I solemnly say to you, no prophet is welcome in his native neighborhood.
Then Jesus said to the high priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come to take Him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as though I were a robber?
So He said to her, "My daughter, it is your faith that has cured you; go on in peace."
but the Pharisees and experts in the law thwarted God's purpose for themselves by refusing to be baptized by him.
Then He laid His hands on her, and at once she straightened herself up and burst into praising God.
and say to the owner of the house, 'Our Teacher says to you, "Where is the room in which I am to eat the Passover supper with my disciples?"'
So they all continued to be utterly astounded at the greatness of God. Now while everybody was wondering at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples,
Those who were about Him saw what was about to take place, and said, "Lord, shall we use our swords now?"
He answered, 'Nine hundred gallons of oil.' Then he said to him, 'Take your bill and sit right down and write four hundred and fifty.'
Then let those in Judea begin to fly to the mountains, and those within the city begin to get out of it,
for the sun had failed to shine. And the curtain before the sanctuary was torn in two.
Everyone who falls upon that stone will be shattered, and he on whom it falls will be crushed to dust."
He answered the experts in the law and the Pharisees by asking, "Is it right to cure people on the Sabbath or not?"
Then He said to them, "What is this that you are discussing together as you walk?" So they stopped and stood still with puzzled countenances.
But they made no answer. So He took hold of the man and cured him and sent him away.
So you must purpose in your hearts not to prepare beforehand how to make your defense,
So no one puts fresh wine into old wine bottles; or, if he does, the fresh wine will burst the bottles, the wine will run out, and the bottles will be ruined.
But Jesus said to them, "You cannot make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you?
"Tell us, if you are the Christ." But He said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe me,
Just then a man named Jairus came up, who had long been leader of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus' feet and persisted in begging Him to come to his house,
Then he will show you a large room upstairs already furnished. There make the preparations."
But as he was saying this, a cloud came and was circling over them, and they were frightened as the two visitors entered into the cloud.
Just as He was approaching the city, going down the Mount of Olives, the whole throng of the disciples began to praise God exultantly and loudly for all the wonder-works that they had seen,
The Pharisee noticed that He did not first wash before lunch, and was surprised.
