But Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”

When evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all those who were sick and those who were demon-possessed.

They found Him and said, “Everyone’s looking for You!”

And He said to them, “Let’s go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach there too. This is why I have come.”

Right away Jesus understood in His spirit that they were thinking like this within themselves and said to them, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?

Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests cannot fast while the groom is with them, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast.

The Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

He said to them, “Have you never read what David and those who were with him did when he was in need and hungry

And looking about at those who were sitting in a circle around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!

Again He began to teach by the sea, and a very large crowd gathered around Him. So He got into a boat on the sea and sat down, while the whole crowd was on the shore facing the sea.

He taught them many things in parables, and in His teaching He said to them:

As he sowed, this occurred: Some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

Other seed fell on rocky ground where it didn’t have much soil, and it sprang up right away, since it didn’t have deep soil.

Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it didn’t produce a crop.

Then He said, “Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!”

Then He said to them: “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any of the parables?

He also said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed? Isn’t it to be put on a lampstand?

Then He said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear. By the measure you use, it will be measured and added to you.

“The kingdom of God is like this,” He said. “A man scatters seed on the ground;

And He said: “How can we illustrate the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use to describe it?

It’s like a mustard seed that, when sown in the soil, is smaller than all the seeds on the ground.

On that day, when evening had come, He told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.”

Then He said to them, “Why are you fearful? Do you still have no faith?”

Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.

When Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him while He was by the sea.

For she said, “If I can just touch His robes, I’ll be made well!”

At once Jesus realized in Himself that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My robes?”

His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing against You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’

“Daughter,” He said to her, “your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be free from your affliction.”

While He was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher anymore?”

He went in and said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.”

Then He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).

Then He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this and said that she should be given something to eat.

When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things?” they said. “What is this wisdom given to Him, and how are these miracles performed by His hands?

Then Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.”

Then He said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that place.

King Herod heard of this, because Jesus’ name had become well known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that’s why supernatural powers are at work in him.”

But others said, “He’s Elijah.” Still others said, “He’s a prophet—like one of the prophets.”

When Herod heard of it, he said, “John, the one I beheaded, has been raised!”

When Herodias’s own daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you.”

Then she went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?”

“John the Baptist’s head!” she said.

Immediately she hurried to the king and said, “I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head on a platter—right now!”

He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.

When it was already late, His disciples approached Him and said, “This place is a wilderness, and it is already late!

“You give them something to eat,” He responded.

They said to Him, “Should we go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

And He asked them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look.”

When they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”

Then He instructed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.

Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves. He kept giving them to His disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.

Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd.

After He said good-bye to them, He went away to the mountain to pray.

for they all saw Him and were terrified. Immediately He spoke with them and said, “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

He also said to them, “You completely invalidate God’s command in order to maintain your tradition!

And He said to them, “Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don’t you realize that nothing going into a man from the outside can defile him?

Then He said, “What comes out of a person—that defiles him.

He said to her, “Allow the children to be satisfied first, because it isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed deeply and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”).

They were extremely astonished and said, “He has done everything well! He even makes deaf people hear, and people unable to speak, talk!”

In those days there was again a large crowd, and they had nothing to eat. He summoned the disciples and said to them,

“How many loaves do you have?” He asked them.

“Seven,” they said.

Then He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke the loaves, and kept on giving them to His disciples to set before the people. So they served the loaves to the crowd.

They also had a few small fish, and when He had blessed them, He said these were to be served as well.

But sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, “Why does this generation demand a sign? I assure you: No sign will be given to this generation!”

Then He left them, got on board the boat again, and went to the other side.

“When I broke the seven loaves for the 4,000, how many large baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?”

“Seven,” they said.

And He said to them, “Don’t you understand yet?”

He looked up and said, “I see people—they look to me like trees walking.”

Then He said to them, “I assure you: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God come in power.”

Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—

“How long has this been happening to him?” Jesus asked his father.

“From childhood,” he said.

Then it came out, shrieking and convulsing him violently. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He’s dead.”

Then He took a child, had him stand among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them,

John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him because he wasn’t following us.”

“Don’t stop him,” said Jesus, “because there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name who can soon afterward speak evil of Me.

He set out from there and went to the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Then crowds converged on Him again and, as He usually did, He began teaching them once more.

They said, “Moses permitted us to write divorce papers and send her away.”

And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.

When Jesus saw it, He was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me. Don’t stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

He said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.”

Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”

Looking at them, Jesus said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God, because all things are possible with God.”

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Him and said, “Teacher, we want You to do something for us if we ask You.”

They answered Him, “Allow us to sit at Your right and at Your left in Your glory.”
