To know [skillful and godly] wisdom and instruction;
To discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,

for acquiring the discipline that produces wise behavior, righteousness, justice, and upright living;


That prudence (good judgment, astute common sense) may be given to the naive or inexperienced [who are easily misled],
And knowledge and discretion (intelligent discernment) to the youth,


To understand a proverb and a figure [of speech] or an enigma with its interpretation,
And the words of the wise and their riddles [that require reflection].

for that shall bring grace unto thy head, and shall be a chain about thy neck.


If they say, “Come with us;
Let us lie in wait to shed blood,
Let us ambush the innocent without cause;

Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

Surely, in vain, is spread the net, in the sight of aught that hath wings!

So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

Seeing then that I have called, and ye refused it: I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded it,

even when the thing that ye be afraid of, falleth in suddenly like a storm, and your misery like a tempest: yea, when trouble and heaviness cometh upon you.

So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;

To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;

To deliver thee from the strange woman, Even from the foreigner that flattereth with her words;

For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

Devise not against thy neighbour an injury, seeing that, he, dwelleth securely by thee.

And he gave me teaching, saying to me, Keep my words in your heart; keep my rules so that you may have life:

Listen, my child, and accept my words, so that the years of your life will be many.

So that if thou goest therein, there shall no straitness hinder thee: and when thou runnest, thou shalt not fall.

For the ways of a person are in front of the Lord's eyes, and the Lord weighs all that person's paths.
