the Pathrusim, the Casluhim (from whence the Philistines descended), and the Caphtorim.

When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah reigned in his place.

When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.

When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah reigned in his place.

When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place.

The sons of Judah: Er, Onan and Shelah; [these] three were born to him from Bathshua the Canaanite. Now Er, Judah's firstborn, [was] evil in the sight of Yahweh, and he put him to death.

And Geshur and Aram took Havvoth-Jair from them, Kenath and its villages, sixty cities. All these [were] the {descendants} of Makir, the father of Gilead.

And the families of Kiriath-Jearim: the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites. From these descended the Zorathites and the Eshtaolites.

And the families of the scribes who lived [at] Jabez: the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and the Sucathites. These [were] the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the house of Recab.

These were the sons of David who were born to him in Hebron: The firstborn was Amnon, whose mother was Ahinoam from Jezreel; the second was Daniel, whose mother was Abigail from Carmel;

All are sons of David, apart from sons of the concubines, and Tamar their sister.

And Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, "Oh that you would surely bless me and enlarge my border. And may your hand be with me, that you would keep me from evil so that it might not harm me!" And God granted what he asked.

The sons of Shelah the son of Judah: Er the father of Lecah, and Laadah the father of Mareshah, and the families of the house of those who worked fine linen, from the house of Ashbea,

Jokim, the men of Cozeba, and Joash and Saraph, both of whom ruled in Moab and Jashubi Lehem. (This information is from ancient records.)

And they found fertile and good pasture, and the land [was] very broad, quiet, and at ease, for the former inhabitants there [were] from Ham.

And some of them from the Simeonites went to Mount Seir, five hundred men. And Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, [were] under their leadership.

though Judah became strong among his brothers and a chief [came] from him, but the birthright belonged to Joseph).

and eastward he dwelt as far as the entrance to the wilderness from the river Euphrates; for their cattle were multiplied in the land of Gilead.

And in the days of Saul they made war with the Hagarites, and they will fall by their hand: and they dwelt in their tents upon all the face from the sunrising to Gilead.

And their brothers from the house of their fathers: Michael, and Meshullam, and Sheba, and Jorai, and Jachan, and Zia, and Heber, seven.

The sons of Reuben and the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh from the sons of strength, men lifting up shield and sword, and bending the bow, and accustomed to war; forty and four thousand and seven hundred and sixty going forth to war.

They captured 50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys, and 100,000 war captives from their possessions.

For many fell down wounded, for the war was from God. And they dwelt in their stead even to the exile.

And the children of the half tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land, from Bashan as far as Baal-Hermon and Senir, and mount Hermon; they were many.

And they trespass against the God of their fathers, and go a-whoring after the gods of the peoples of the land whom God destroyed from their presence;

And these are they whom David stationed over the parts of the song of the house of Jehovah, from the resting of the ark,

These are the ones who served along with their sons: From the Kohathites: Heman the musician, son of Joel, son of Samuel,

Their relatives the Levites [who were not descended from Aaron] were appointed for all the other kinds of service of the tabernacle of the house of God.

These were the places assigned to Aaron’s sons from the Kohathite family for their settlements in their territory, because the first lot was for them.

And from the tribe of Benjamin, Geba with its pasturelands, Alemeth with its pasturelands, and Anathoth with its pasturelands. All their cities [were] thirteen cities throughout their clans.

To the Kohathites who remained from the family of the half-tribe, the half of Manasseh, [were given] by lot ten cities.

The Gershomites were assigned 13 towns from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Manasseh in Bashan according to their families.

The Merarites were assigned by lot 12 towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun according to their families.

They allotted these previously named cities from the territory of the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.

Some of the families of the Kohathites were given towns from the tribe of Ephraim for their territory:

From half the tribe of Manasseh, Aner and its pasturelands, and Bileam and its pasturelands were given to the rest of the families of the Kohathites.

The Gershomites received:

Golan in Bashan and its pasturelands, and Ashtaroth and its pasturelands from the families of half the tribe of Manasseh.

From the tribe of Issachar they received Kedesh and its pasturelands, Daberath and its pasturelands,

From the tribe of Asher they received Mashal and its pasturelands, Abdon and its pasturelands,

From the tribe of Naphtali they received Kedesh in Galilee and its pasturelands, Hammon and its pasturelands, and Kiriathaim and its pasturelands.

The rest of the Merarites received:

From the tribe of Zebulun they received Rimmono and its pasturelands and Tabor and its pasturelands.

From the tribe of Reuben across the Jordan at Jericho, to the east of the Jordan, they received Bezer in the desert and its pasturelands, Jahzah and its pasturelands,

From the tribe of Gad they received Ramoth in Gilead and its pasturelands, Mahanaim and its pasturelands,

Their relatives among all the families of Issachar, courageous men, registered by genealogies, were 87,000 in all.

In addition, Shuppim and Huppim were the sons of Ir, and the Hushites were descended from Aher.

Now Makir married a wife from the Huppites and Shuppites. (His sister's name was Maacah.) Zelophehad was Manasseh's second son; he had only daughters.

And Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer and Elead, whom the men of Gath, who had been living in the land from their birth, put to death, because they came down to take away their cattle.

And Shaharaim begat in the field of Moab from his sending them away; Hushim and Baara his wives.

And he will beget from Hodesh his wife, Jobab, and Zibia, and Mesha, and Malcham,

And from Hushim he begat Abitub and Elpaal.

And Mikloth fathered Shimeah. And these also lived with their brothers in Jerusalem, across from them.

And the sons of Ulam will be strong men of power, bending the bow, and many sons and sons' sons, a hundred and fifty. All these from the sons of Benjamin.

Some from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim and Manasseh settled in Jerusalem.

Uthai the son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, from the sons of Perez, the son of Judah.

And from the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn and his sons.

And from the sons of Zerah: Jeuel and their brethren, six hundred and ninety.

And from the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, the son of Hassenuah;

And from the priests: Jedaiah; Jehoiarib; Jakin;

And from the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, from the sons of Merari;

he serves to this day at the King's Gate on the east. These were the gatekeepers from the camp of the descendants of Levi.

Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his relatives from his family (the Korahites) were assigned to guard the entrance to the sanctuary. Their ancestors had guarded the entrance to the Lord's dwelling place.

To the four quarters will be the gates, from the sunrising, the sea, the north and the south.

And their brethren, in their villages, were to come after every seven days from time to time with them.

And, some from among them, were over the utensils of the service, - for, by number, used they to bring them in, and, by number, used they to take them forth.

And, some from among them, were appointed over the utensils, yea over all the vessels of the holy place, - and over the fine meal, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices.

And, some from among the sons of the priests, were compounders of perfumes, with the spices.

And, Mattithiah, from among the Levites, - the same, was the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite - was in trust over the making of the flat cakes.

And from the sons of the Kohathites, some of their kinsmen [were] over the {showbread} to prepare [it] {every Sabbath}.

Now these [were] the singers; the heads of the {families} of the Levites [were] in the chambers free from other service, for day and night [they were] over them on the service.

And Mikloth fathered Shimeam. And they also dwelt with their brothers at Jerusalem, across from their brothers.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and every Israelite fled away from before the Philistines. And they fell slain upon Mount Gilboa.

And the war will be heavy upon Saul, and they shooting with bows will find him, and he will be wounded from those shooting.

And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that the men of Israel had gone in flight and that Saul and his sons were dead, they went in flight away from their towns; and the Philistines came and took them for themselves.

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip loot from the corpses, they discovered Saul and his sons lying dead on Mount Gilboa.

So Saul died for his transgressions; that is, he acted unfaithfully to the LORD by transgressing the message from the LORD (which he did not keep), by consulting a medium for advice,

and by not seeking counsel from the LORD, who therefore put him to death and turned the kingdom over to Jesse's son David.

And he built the city all around from the Millo and up to the circuit. And Joab restored the remainder of the city.

These are the leaders of the elite warriors who were strong supporters of David in his kingdom, along with all of Israel, in keeping with the message from the LORD concerning Israel.

He was with David at Pas-dammim, where the Philistines were gathered together to battle; and there was there a plot of ground full of barley; and the people had fled from before the Philistines.

And the three from the thirty heads will go down upon the rock to David to the cave of Adullam; and the camp of the rovers encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

And David had a craving, and he said, "Who could give me a drink of water from the well of Bethlehem that [is] by the gate!"

Then the three broke through into the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem that [was] by the gate and brought [it] and came to David. But David would not drink it and poured it out before Yahweh.

And he said, "Far be it from me [that] I would do this before my God. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For {at the risk of their lives} they brought it." And he was not willing to drink it. These things the three mighty men did.

Joab's brother Abishai was the lieutenant in charge of the platoons. He used his spear to fight and kill 300 men, gaining a reputation distinct from the Three.

From the three he was given double honor and he became their officer, even though he was not one of them.

[And] Benaiah the son of Jehoiada [was] {a strong man} from Kabzeel, [one who did] great deeds. He himself struck down two [sons of] Ariel of Moab. And he himself went down and struck down a lion within a pit on a snowy day.

And he himself struck down an Egyptian man, a large man five cubits [tall]. And in the hand of the Egyptian [was] a spear like a weaver's beam. But he went down to him with a club and seized the spear from the hand of the Egyptian and killed him with his own spear.

He received honor from the thirty warriors, though he was not one of the three elite warriors. David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

Now the mighty warriors of the troops [were] Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo from Bethlehem,

Shammoth from Haror, Helez the Pelonite,

Ikkesh's son Ira from Tekoa, Abiezer from Anathoth,

Maharai from Netophah, Baanah's son Heled from Netophah,

Ittai the son of Ribai from Gibeah of the people of Benjamin, Benaiah the Pirathonite,

Hurai from the valleys of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite,

Azmaveth from Baharum, Eliahba from Shaalbon,

Hezro from Carmel, Ezbai's son Naarai,

Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai from Beeroth, who was the armor-bearer for Zeruiah's son Joab,

These were the men who joined David in Ziklag, when he was banished from the presence of Saul son of Kish. (They were among the warriors who assisted him in battle.

[They were] armed with [the] bow, [able to shoot] right-handed or left-handed, [slinging] stones or [shooting] arrows with the bow; [they were] kinsmen of Saul from Benjamin.

Their leaders were Shemaah's sons Ahiezer and Joash from Gibeah, Azmaveth's sons Jeziel and Pelet, Beracah, Jehu from Anathoth,
