[because I] hear about your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints.

so that the christian faith, which you have in common with us, displays itself to the observation of all good men about you.

whom I wished to detain about myself, that in thy stead he might have waited upon me during my bonds for the gospel:

but I would not do a single thing about it without your consent, so that this kindness of yours to me might not seem to come by compulsion but voluntarily.
