Behold, I watch over them for evil, and not for good. And all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there is an end of them.

Why have I seen it? They are dismayed and have turned backward. And their mighty ones are beaten down, and have fled apace, and do not look back. Terror is on every side, says LORD.

The nations have heard of thy shame, and the earth is full of thy cry. For the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty; they are fallen, both of them together.

Why are thy strong ones swept away? They stood not, because LORD drove them.

Also her hired men in the midst of her are like calves of the stall, for they also are turned back. They have fled away together. They did not stand, for the day of their calamity has come upon them, the time of their visitation.

They shall cut down her forest, says LORD, though it cannot be searched because they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable.

How can ye say, We are mighty men, and valiant men for the war?

All ye who are round about him, bemoan him, and all ye who know his name, say, How the strong staff has broken, the beautiful rod!

For every head is bald, and every beard clipped. Upon all the hands are cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.

A drought is upon her waters, and they shall be dried up. For it is a land of graven images, and they are mad over idols.

They lay hold on bow and spear. They are cruel, and have no mercy. Their voice roars like the sea, and they ride upon horses, each one set in array, as a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.

Babylon has been a golden cup in LORD's hand, that made all the earth drunken. The nations have drunk of her wine, therefore the nations are mad.

They are vanity, a work of delusion. In the time of their visitation they shall perish.

Thou are my battle-axe and weapons of war. And with thee I will break in pieces the nations, and with thee I will destroy kingdoms,

The mighty men of Babylon have ceased fighting; they remain in their strongholds. Their might has failed. They have become as women. Her dwelling-places are set on fire. Her bars are broken.

And the passages are seized, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are frightened.

When they are heated, I will make their feast. And I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, says LORD.

We are confounded, because we have heard reproach. Confusion has covered our faces. For strangers have come into the sanctuaries of LORD's house.

For the destroyer has come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken. Their bows are broken in pieces. For LORD is a God of recompenses; he will surely requite.

And Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that would come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written concerning Babylon.

And thou shall say, Thus Babylon shall sink, and shall not rise again because of the evil that I will bring upon her, and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
